March is HERE! With that being said, we will have an extra busy month reading as we all work together reading Flora and Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo. I have shared the calendar of events below so you know ahead of time some of the activities and events happening. Talk with your eagle about those events. What is something that they enjoyed? What is something that they learned? What is going on in the book that we are all reading?

Help celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss on March 3rd! While his official birthday is on Sunday, March 2nd, we thought it would be fun to keep celebrating....on MONDAY! Dress like your favorite Dr. Seuss character on Monday, March 3rd.

Importance of Volunteer Registration form (Background Check) on file

New SEMESTER - - TIME TO FILL OUT A NEW I-Chat form to Volunteer. Please be sure to get these to the office in time to have the check before the event. Thank you for your help!

Visitors are welcome in our building. In order to chaperone on trips, assist in classroom parties, help at field day, etc. you must have completed a Volunteer Registration Form to have a background check done prior to you helping. Given the process takes a couple days, please plan ahead. The application must be turned into the school at least 5 school days prior to the activity occurring. The form must be completed and is a non-negotiable for student safety. If you do not have one on file the day of the event, you will not be able to attend. As a parent myself, I hope that you understand the importance of the background check and will trust this process.

The best way to avoid hiccups and issues is to complete the form now! Click here to access the form. Complete the form and return it to the main office.

Please make sure you have a scheduled appointment time with your child’s teacher if coming in. Upon arrival, please sign in at the office.

The Troubadors from the Flint Institute of Music are back on tour and came to Central Elementary on February 26th! They performed two shows for students utilizing music, movement and inspiration.

The mission of the Troubadours is to support music and arts education by providing students with the experience of encountering the power of music and performing arts.

State Standardized Testing is coming.... State Standardized Testing is coming....

Spring is always the time when we spend some time on the state standardized testing. M-Step this year will be given mid April to early May at Central Elementary. I will provide you specific dates as we get closer so you can ensure your Eagle is at school and on time to provide a successful testing experience.

To help us prepare I wanted to share with you some info ahead of time pertaining to the Electronic Device Policy. According to the state of Michigan the following Electronic Devices will NOT be allowed:

-any electronic device that can be used to record, to transmit, or to receive information not used for testing

-computer tablets, iPads, e-readers (for example: kindle)

-smart watches (for examples: FitBits; Apple, Garmin, Samsung watches, any watch with access to other applications or the internet)

-smart phones and cell phones

-headphones with advanced technology, including voice command, texting, app connection, and connection to the internet

-smart glasses

I am sharing this info ahead of time as any of the above devices will not be allowed into the room during testing. If one of the above is found to be on a student, in a pocket, etc. your child's test will need to be coded as invaild with the state of Michigan.

SOAR and the Positivity Project SOAR and the Positivity Project

zoom_out_map

Here are some ways your student can show off how they SOAR:

  • Stay Safe - wearing appropriate winter gear during recess, walking to the lunch line

  • Offer Kindness - offering support to students who are struggling, helping a teacher in the classroom

  • Act Responsibly - being honest with teachers and friends, watching for your car or bus instead of playing around after school

  • Remember respect - giving others personal space, treating others the way we would want to be treated

Ask your student… how did you SOAR today at Central?

****

Linden Community Schools has launched a Positive School Climate initiative across the district centered around the S.O.A.R acronym: Stay Safe, Offer Kindness, Act Responsibly, and Remember Respect. Here at Central Elementary, each classroom has a positive behavior matrix listing the expectations for students to be successful learners. We also have a schoolwide matrix that sets expectations for behavior in spaces like the playground, the cafeteria, the hallways, and the bathrooms. Daily morning announcements, classroom lessons, and the distribution of SOAR tickets to students who are following these expectations help reinforce these values and create a strong, respectful community in our school.

Dress for the Michigan weather... Dress for the Michigan weather...

The warmer weather may be on the way...but so is the rain for Spring! Please make sure that your student is prepared for the weather. We will be going outside for fresh air for our recess each day so long as the weather permits.

***

Please make sure your child is prepared for the elements. Hats, gloves, warm coats, snow pants, and boots are all essential regardless of the changing weather patterns. It's always easier to have clothing you don't need for recess then it is to go outside wishing you had another layer of protection from the elements. Students will be going out weather permitted. The office does not keep extra clothes for students to utilize for recess. If your family is in need of support of winter gear, please contact the office.

We have a number of students coming to school in sandals and Crocs. These are not appropriate for the Michigan Winter weather so please be sure that they have a pair of boots for outside.

At what temperature do you keep the children inside for recess?

When the "feels like" temperature is below zero we will keep the children inside, yes, this includes the wind chill.

Please keep toys, stuffed animals and "home" items at home... Please keep toys, stuffed animals and "home" items at home...

zoom_out_map

We are finding that more and more items from home that are not necessary to the learning environment are making the trip here to Central. Please have conversations with your student that stuffed animals, toys, games, etc. need to stay at home.

Of course the only pass on this is if teachers have a scheduled reading day that students might be able to bring a blanket or stuffed animal. Otherwise, all "home" items must stay at home. If your student continues to be warned, we will place a phone call for you to pick up the item in the office.

Thank you for your support with this!

Staying Healthy... Staying Healthy...

We are definitely in the cold and flu season; please remind your children the importance of washing their hands, trying to keep their hands off their faces, covering their mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, and not sharing their food with others. These are proven strategies to reducing the spread of illness. Remember, a child with a fever or who is physically ill must stay home for at least 24 hours and be symptom free without medication before returning to school.

Just a reminder: Be prepared to show ID Just a reminder: Be prepared to show ID

When picking up your student from school early, please be prepared to show your ID. This is for safety and security of our students. Know that while we are working to build relationships with our families we don't always have the same people working in the office, nor do we often see you each day. Thank you for being patient to ensure our Eagles are safe!

Reminder about Health Safety & Birthday treats at Central... Reminder about Health Safety & Birthday treats at Central...

Just wanted to remind you of the health safety information shared in the welcome back letter in August especially as it pertains to meds and birthday treats.

Some of our students have been diagnosed with Tree Nut/Peanut Allergies and have had severe reactions after contact. Please be cognizant of any allergy in your child’s classroom.
A few students are diabetic and have food restrictions. Medications and special accommodations for the health of your child are required to have a medical professional authorization form completed. Please refer to the forms section at www.lindenschools.org. If planning for birthday treats please take the above info into consideration and plan for store bought pre-packaged items. Check with your child’s teacher for ideas.

Assistance with Parking Lot during Arrival and Dismissal Assistance with Parking Lot during Arrival and Dismissal

I am noticing that arrival and dismissal can be a bit challenging. Please know that student safety is of top priority. While we recognize that some of you may be in a hurry, it is absolutely important to pack your patience each day for both arrival and dismissal for pick up and drop off.

Students cannot be wandering into the parking lot on their own. The parking lot is for "parking" only. If you wish to park and walk your child up to the building that is up to you. If you must pick them up from the parking lot, it is expected that you walk your student to ensure safety. The last thing that we want is that someone gets injured because of carelessness.

Our main goal is fluidity, so please join the queue to drop your Eagle off or pick them up from the car line loop. If all those participating in the loop pull all the way forward, students hop out or into the car quickly, the time will be minimal.

I am hopeful that together we can work through this to ensure student safety.

Parent Pick Up by 3:15pm please Parent Pick Up by 3:15pm please

The office is a busy place at the end of the day. If you would like to sign your student out at the end of the day please be sure to stop by the office prior to 3:15pm. As the end of day dismissal is happening, students are packing up, teachers and students are moving, it makes it very difficult to locate students. It takes a village and we appreciate you understanding.

End of day changes End of day changes

If you are aware of end of day changes in which your eagle will veer off the "normal" schedule (needs to be a pick up rather than ride the bus), please make sure to send your student with a note to school that day. If you must contact the school to make changes to end of day dismissal, you must call the office by 3pm. Please know that the office gets rather crazy towards the end of day and while we do try and make sure all information is passed along, students start traveling throughout the building and it makes the message hard to reach the recipient. A note will help!

Unfortunately, at this time we are unable to switch busses, allow a friend to tag along with another student, etc. so please plan accordingly as the transportation works through continuous transportation glitches.

Make sure ParentVue has up to date contact info Make sure ParentVue has up to date contact info

Emergency contacts and transportation information needs to be updated when changes happen. Please make sure that your ParentVue account has been updated when things change, like that of phone numbers, address, etc. Our systems pull from this data and if you haven't updated it, we will not know without you making changes to ParentVue. If you should have questions, please contact the office at 810/591-8410.

If you have someone that plans to pick up your eagle and they are not on your emergency contact being they have permission to pick up, someone will be contacting you to approve this change. To eliminate this from happening, be sure that ParentVue is up do date by adding those who are approved to pick up your eagle. Thanks for your support with this!

Staff of the Month - February Staff of the Month - February

zoom_out_map

Congrats to Kelly O'Connell who is being recognized as our staff member of the month for February. Her colleagues have this to say about her....our building could not run without her. With the ongoing technology issues, Kelly is always available to jump in and solve the problem making sure that our students and staff have what they need to be successful. Kelly maintains a positive attitude through it all and goes above and beyond. She is patient, knowledgeable, and really lights a spark to get kids excited for reading...particularly those that tend to struggle. She wears many hats and rocks every single one of them, holding this school together when it is needed most. Her door is always open, not just during library times for students and staff, but anytime that someone needs a book or time to take a break and build a puzzle or play a game. Kelly was instrumental in pulling together staff to represent Central for the Faculty Follies this year. She put forth a lot of work to make our library festive for a staff gathering for the holidays. She always makes the library warm and inviting for everyone. Without a doubt she is our February Staff of the Month.

Congrats Kelly!

Have you completed the form for Education Benefits? Although meals are free this year, we still need an Education Benefits Application completed. This information is critical in determining the amount of money that our school receives from a variety of State and Federal supplemental programs like Title I A, At-risk (31a), Title II A, E-Rate, etc. If you haven't already completed the form please take a moment to do so. We are moving through the year and our next event coming up is the Shamrock Shuffle on March 12th. Be on the look out for the flyer coming home. There will also be volunteer opportunities for this after-school event so be on the look out for the sign up genius as well. You do have to volunteer to be at the event, so please make sure you have an ICHAT on file. Just a reminder it is a 5 school day turn around to ensure the paperwork is complete so please get the iChat info turned in. If you already have one turned in for the school year, you do not need to turn another in.

We are currently working on bringing in some fun but educational assemblies this year, and working on field trip assistance. We are so grateful to all of our Central Families who help make these things possible!
