Animal Habitat Project
Next week we will be wrapping up the habitat unit by creating IN CLASS habitat dioramas. I am asking each student to bring a small shoe box or amazon box and some items that they can use to decorate the inside of their habitat in class! We will have some supplies to use within the classroom, but anything in particular your child may want they can provide from their home, if parents allow them to do so. The only requirement is that each student brings their own UNFINISHED empty box by Friday, March 3rd or Monday, March 6th at the latest. This will be an IN CLASS assignment. The habitats students will be able to choose from are: desert, arctic, rainforest and water habitats.
Thanks so much for your support in this FUN Science Extension!
P.S. Even old animal toys that are small that you would like to get rid of will work as well!
Healthy Snacks!
PLEASE REMEMBER TO PACK YOUR CHILD A HEALTHY AND MESS FREE SNACK EACH DAY.
Did you know that a snack at the right time between meals can prevent major hunger pangs and gives a child an energy boost to keep him or her studying and playing hard at school?
Specials S'more
What is your child learning this week?
Phonics: In phonics this week we will review the following concepts, blending phonemes to form words and isolating initial sounds. You can help your child practice these review skills at home by doing the following: Tell children that they will be playing a blending game. I will say all of the sounds in a word. I will take a step for each sound and then jump to say the word altogether. Listen: /sh/ /o/ /p/. Shop! Have children line up and say a familiar one-syllable word sound-by-sound. Listen: /ch/ /i/ /p/. Have children take a step forward as they say the sounds and jump as they say the word. What word? (chip). Students will also learn the initial digraphs in a word. The two that we will focus on this week will be, sh and ch. Ways to help at home with this concept: Write the words ship, shock, and shut on the board. Point to the digraph (two fingers together for two letters) in each word, and ask children to say the sound and read the word. Write the words chat, check, and chip on the board. Point to the digraph (two fingers together for two letters) in each word, and ask children to say the sound and read the word. Lastly, students will be learning four new sight words: back, let, were, what.
Grammar : In Grammar, we will be reviewing what an adjective is. It is a word that describes a noun. The brown dog ran down the street. We also will be reviewing and working on writing a complete sentence. It always starts with an uppercase letter and ends with an end mark, like a period. Writers use complete sentences to help make their message clear and that a complete sentence includes a subject and a verb. The subject has a noun that tells who or what the sentence is about and the verb tells what that person or thing is doing or did.
Reading: The students will be reading a non-fiction (informational text) and a fiction read aloud. The stories are Plants Feed Me. and PB & J Hooray The students will be reviewing story sequencing and will be able to retell the story. We will also be reviewing authors purpose and central idea and key details. Students will also be reviewing text features in our informational text. Our new vocabulary words are: crop, factory, ingredient, garden, harvest, plant.
Writing- In writing students will practice their procedural writing by writing how-to's. Day one will begin with the students writing a how-to on how to blow a bubble. After they finish their procedural writing, they will put their writing clarity to the test and give the directions to another student to see if they can successfully blow a bubble. Day 2-3 will consist of the students writing a how-to on how to catch a Leprechaun. Students will use transitional words to write their how-to. The next day students will engage in a STEM challenge and use their procedural writing to guide them in making a Leprechaun trap!
Math- In math we are continuing our 3 Dimensional Shapes Unit. Now that we know what the 3-D shapes are we will be working on more challenging skills. Here we will focus on reviewing the name of the shape as well as identifying/classifying the attributes of vertices, sides, Faces and if it slides, rolls or does both.
Social studies As we near the end of our good citizens of Texas unit, students will learn about Ann Richards and George H.W. Bush. Students will focus on how these citizens' actions impacted the history and make-up of Texas.
Science: This week we will be wrapping up Unit 8 and taking an assessment. In this unit students learned how to observe and identify the dependence of animals on air, water, food, space, and shelter. To review this unit, this week students will examine evidence that living organisms have basic needs by learning about a habitat and how an animal can survive there. Students will also examine evidence that living organisms have basic needs by researching an animal and how it can survive in its habitat.
