Cardinal Call
Greetings, Cardinals!
Fall is in full swing and with that comes our fall high school traditions. One of the most exciting is homecoming! We will have repeating information in the upcoming Cardinal Calls about our homecoming festivities. Please review them closely so that you can make sure to meet the deadlines for guest forms and ticket sales. General inquiries about guest forms can be directed to the main office, and ticket sales questions can answered by the athletic and activities office.
Another fall event is PreACT testing. This year testing is on September 22. Please take a moment to review the information about testing below so you can be prepared for testing day. This year high school seniors across the district are expected to attend school. More information about that change can be found below. Thank you, and let's have a great week!
Sincerely,
Jim Ertel
Principal

Fall PreACT Testing
On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, Sun Prairie East will administer the PreACT exam to all 9th–11th grade students during the school day. Seniors still report to school on testing day. We will have Senior Focus Day for 12th graders.
Why the PreACT?
In the Fall, the PreACT is for practice and feedback and is not used for college admissions or state reporting. In addition to providing data to our educators to inform future instruction, it also provides valuable information to support student growth. The assessment helps students:
⭐ Identify academic strengths
🔍 Spot areas to improve
📝 Gain experience with ACT-style questions
📊 Plan for college and career readiness
How can I prepare for the PreACT?
In SP30, students will receive key information about preparing and test-taking strategies.
The PreACT mirrors the ACT, so these materials can double as preparation for both assessments: Test Prep & Kaplan Test Prep & ACT practice test.
All students also have access to free ACT & SAT prep through a program called Methodize that students can find under the Resources tab on Xello (an academic & career planning application on school issued devices).
What can I expect on Test Day?
Students will test during the regular school start time.
Students should bring a fully charged device, along with a water bottle and snack to be eaten during the scheduled break. All other testing materials will be provided.
Testing room assignments will be posted in school common areas.
What’s on the PreACT?
English – 35 minutes | 48 items
Math – 45 minutes | 26 items
Reading – 40 minutes | 33 items
Science – 40 minutes | 36 items
Results will be available about three weeks after testing and will be shared with both students and parents/caregivers.
Senior Future Focus Day
While 9th-11th graders are testing, SPEHS will be hosting Senior Future Focus Day. The time with our seniors is designed to help them get ready for their post high school experience. After testing, we will have a modified schedule to help accommodate students that may have extended time testing.
We will take attendance on September 22 like any normal school day. If you plan on missing on the 22nd, please make sure to call the attendance line so that your absence can be recorded. Thank you!
PreACT Donations Welcome!
This year for the PreACT day (Sept 22), we are looking for donations of nut-free snacks for our students. If you are able to contribute, please sign up on the link below. All students 9-12 will be in the building all day, grades 9-11 take the PreACT.
We are also hosting a senior breakfast that day as seniors are required to attend school. On the sign up, there are some items that say senior breakfast or senior prizes. We are asking for donations for those things as well, some of which are student requested 🙂
If you can contribute in any way, the students would greatly appreciate it!
Electronic Devices - 9/13 Weekly Update
After the second week of school we want to congratulate our students on their support and compliance with the Bell to Bell - No Cell policy. After one week we had 13 phones turned into the main office. That means that 99.9% of the student body honored our new policy. Great work!
ID Requirement Update
Additional clarification about the requirement for students to wear their IDs has been provided to high school administration. Starting in October students will be required to wear their IDs on their person.
- This means student will not have to wear their ID around their neck on a lanyard, but could if they prefer.
- Lanyards have already been purchased by schools so they will be provided to students if they would like one, for free.
- Plastic ID badge holders have also been purchased by schools and they will also be provided to students if they would like one, for free.
- Students do have the option to purchase a lanyard or badge clip of their choosing if they would like.
- East plans to provide SP30 lessons for students on what this could look like at the end of September, and we will continue to provide updates on this policy as they are provided.
Monitoring Student Activity on School-Issued Devices via Securly
Securly is the tool used by the District to keep harmful content on school-issued devices away from our students. Securly has a feature that will allow our teachers to directly observe what is on the Chromebook screens of the students in their classrooms.
The Securly tool also allows parents and caregivers to observe their child's activity while using school-issued devices. Parents and caregivers can access this information by viewing their child's Activity Feed. Parents and caregivers also receive Flagged Activity notifications that inform them of any flagged activities pointing to self-harm or bullying related to their child.
Please see the instructions included in the links below for more information on how to access the Securly app:

AP Information
AP Students & Families: Over the last several years, Sun Prairie East High School has been left with a large bill of unpaid AP exam fees. In an effort to become more fiscally responsible and ensure that our AP exam order accurately reflects students’ plans, we are changing the date of when AP exam fees are due. This year, AP exam fees will be posted to students’ Infinite Campus accounts by October 1st, 2026. Each AP exam costs $99, and payment for AP exam fees will be due by November 1st, 2026. Please be aware that students whose AP exam fees have not been paid by the deadline will not have an AP exam ordered for them. For students who are on free or reduced lunch programming, AP exam fees are waived due to Wisconsin state law (Wis. Stat. sec. 120.12(22)). Please reach out to Beth Butler, AP Coordinator, at eabutle@sunprairieschools.org or 608-834-6700 ext. 5778 with questions.
Reminders for Students and Families
SPEHS is a Closed Campus
Sun Prairie Area School District schools are closed campuses, which means students may not leave school property during the school day for lunch and must adhere to the excused absence procedures previously outlined.
Students may leave school only with permission from a parent/caregiver and only for excused activities. Parents/caregivers should not excuse their students from school to leave campus to have lunch offsite. Caregivers are welcome to drop off food for their students in the main office, but please do not utilize delivery services such as Door Dash.
Information on our closed campus can be found on pages 23-24 of the student handbook.
Shuttle Schedule
If you have a cross-site class and need to take the shuttle, the schedule is below. Please note that there will likely be some stop adjustments at the middle schools as class enrollments are finalized.
