COUNSELOR CORNER

Welcome back to school.

I hope everyone is adjusting well to their new routines.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Also known in our district as “You Matter Week.” At the elementary level, our school counseling lessons will focus on age-appropriate skills that support positive mental health and help students build protective factors.

Students will learn to:

  • Identify and express feelings

  • Use healthy coping strategies

  • Build supportive relationships

  • Identify trusted adults

  • Ask for help

  • Know what to do when they are worried about themselves or someone else

Our message to every student is simple:

You Matter. You Belong. You Are Not Alone. Asking for Help Is a Strength. Lessons will be adjusted to meet the developmental needs of each grade level. Younger students will focus primarily on feelings, coping, and identifying trusted adults. Older elementary students will also learn how to appropriately respond when they are concerned about another person's well-being or safety.

Families can support this learning by talking with your child about trusted adults and practicing simple phrases such as, “I need help,” “I’m having a hard time,” or “Can I talk to you?”

Together, we can help every child know:
You Matter. You Belong. You Are Not Alone.
