A Letter from the Principal - Week of February 16, 2026

One Team. One Track. One Goal: Excellence for Every Student!

A Letter from the Principal

Dear CMS Families,

Last week, I shared how much we missed our students during the winter storm and how critical it was that we “hit the ground running” upon our return. I also issued a call to action asking for your partnership in making attendance a top priority.

And CMS families - you answered that call in a BIG way.

Our attendance averaged 94.7% for the week, the highest attendance rate we have had all school year! That is something to celebrate. Thank you for ensuring your children were here, on time, and ready to learn. Your commitment makes a direct impact on student success.

After being apart longer than expected, having our halls filled again with energy, laughter, and learning reminded us why presence matters so much. Direct instruction, classroom discussions, hands-on learning, and teacher support truly cannot be replicated when students are absent. Last week proved what happens when we work together - students thrive.

We are also excited to share that interims were sent home on Friday. We are so proud of our students’ hard work and dedication! If your student needs additional support, please reach out to their teachers - together, we will ensure every student has the guidance and resources they need to succeed.

It was a powerful and meaningful week at CMS!

We proudly kicked off Black History Month, engaging students in learning experiences that honor the achievements, contributions, and lasting impact of African Americans throughout our nation’s history.

Our Kindness Week spirit days filled the building with positivity and joy. More importantly, our students demonstrated empathy and compassion through their words and actions - exactly the culture we strive to build each day.

We also began celebrating Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, highlighting the many pathways available to our students as they prepare for their futures. As part of this focus, students have already started bringing in donations for our community food drive to support families in need. What better way to connect learning, leadership, and kindness than by serving others?

On Tuesday, we proudly crowned our grade-level Spelling Bee Champions:

  • 8th Grade Champion – Remmy Anderson

  • 7th Grade Champion – Liliana Bouguess

  • 6th Grade Champion – Amanda Sanchez Moreno

These outstanding young ladies represented CMS at the Alleghany Highlands Public Schools Division Spelling Bee on Thursday, and we are thrilled to share that our very own Amanda was named the AHPS Division Spelling Bee Champion!

Amanda will now advance to compete at the Regional Spelling Bee held at Radford University - an incredible accomplishment!

The momentum is strong, and we are excited to keep it going. Please continue to prioritize daily, on-time attendance and communicate with us if your child needs support. Together, we are building not just academic success, but a caring and connected school community.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

With Cougar Pride,

Lori Mattson

Interim Principal

What an INCREDIBLE week of spelling at CMS!

On Tuesday, our classroom Spelling Bee winners took the stage for our grade-level Spelling Bee, and WOW - the talent, courage, and preparation on display were amazing! We are so proud of every single student who represented their classroom. It takes bravery to step up to the microphone, spell under pressure, and compete in front of peers - and our students did just that with confidence and Cougar pride!

From that competition, three outstanding spellers advanced to represent CMS at the Division Spelling Bee on Thursday - and they did not disappoint! Congratulations to Remmy Anderson (8th Grade Champ), Liliana Boguess (7th Grade Champ) and Amanda Sanchez Moreno (6th Grade Champ).

These three Champions moved on to the AHPS Division Spelling Bee on Thursday and after intense rounds and some truly impressive words, we are thrilled to celebrate our Division Champion:

🏆 6th grader Amanda Moreno Sanchez! 🏆

Amanda showed poise, determination, and remarkable skill as she earned the title of Alleghany Highlands Public Schools Division Spelling Bee Champion. What an accomplishment!

We are beyond proud of ALL of our spellers - from classroom champions to grade-level competitors to our division representatives. You each represent the very best of CMS!

Amanda, we are cheering you on as you advance to the Regional Spelling Bee at Radford University! We know you will continue to shine! 🌟

Celebrating CTE Month & Giving Back!

February continues to be an exciting time at CMS as we celebrate Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month - a reminder that learning extends far beyond textbooks and into real-world skills that prepare our students for college, careers, and life.

Our students have been actively participating in our school-wide Food Drive.

📦 Food Drive Reminder:
Non-perishable items are being collected during 1st period throughout the month.

🥞 Incentive:
The 1st period class with the largest total donation by the end of February will earn a pancake breakfast celebration!

Beyond the competition, what matters most is the lesson our students are learning: career readiness includes compassion, service, and giving back. Thank you for supporting this effort and for helping our students see that their actions - even one can at a time - truly make a difference in our community.

Step into the “shop” at CMS and you’ll quickly see that learning is happening in powerful, hands-on ways! Our students are applying science, math, and problem-solving skills as they design and build woodworking projects, grow plants using our hydroponic tower system, and explore plant science through our 4-H/FFA Club.

From seed to harvest, students are planting and caring for microgreens, monitoring growth, adjusting water systems, and reflecting on results. (Be sure to check out the photos of Aidyn P. repairing the hydroponic tower’s water pump, highlights from our 4-H/FFA Club meetings, and students hard at work!)

These interactive experiences go far beyond traditional instruction. Students collaborate, troubleshoot real challenges, and take responsibility for their projects. Learning through doing deepens their understanding of agriculture while developing practical skills they can carry into future careers - and everyday life.

With February being Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, we are also excited to celebrate FFA Week (February 21st–28th). Throughout the week, students will hear an Agriculture “Fact of the Day” during morning announcements, and our Agriscience classes will donate completed woodworking projects to local businesses - showcasing both their craftsmanship and community spirit.

Students interested in getting more involved are encouraged to join the fun at our upcoming FFA–4H Club meetings. There is truly something growing for everyone at CMS! 🌿

🧮 Real-World Math in Action 🧮 Real-World Math in Action

Our 6th graders put their math skills to work in a fun and practical way this week!

Mrs. Holesapple took students on a virtual field trip to Walmart to explore unit rate in real-world situations. Students compared different products, calculated the unit rate for each item, and determined which option was the better deal.

To extend their learning, Mr. Arritt had students use Walmart.com to research real-time pricing and find the best unit rates for selected items. This hands-on activity connected classroom math to everyday decision-making - showing students how math helps them become informed consumers.

We love seeing our Cougars apply their learning in meaningful ways. They are well on their way to becoming smart shoppers - and even stronger mathematicians!

Students of the Week

Congratulations to our Math Student of the Week! These students consistently

put in the effort, ask thoughtful questions, and take pride in their learning. They

are growing their math skills and setting a great example for others. Way to go!

6th Grade - Samantha Armstrong

7th Grade - Lillie Kern

8th Grade - Jack Shull

Algebra - Faith Shull

6th Grade Math Spotlight

Sixth graders are hard at work exploring proportional relationships. They are

practicing identifying equivalent ratios, solving proportion problems, and explaining

their thinking using models and words. Great effort and growth are happening in

math!

7th Grade Math Spotlight

Seventh grade students are exploring slope and how it shows the relationship

between two quantities. They are practicing finding slope from graphs and tables,

interpreting positive and negative slopes, and connecting slope to real-life

examples.

8th Grade Math Spotlight

Eighth grade students are strengthening their geometry skills by working with

angles. They are learning how angles relate to one another and using these

relationships to justify their thinking and solve multi-step problems.

*The Zearn requirement for each student is 45 minutes per week. This breaks down to under 10 minutes per week day...Please remember to NOW complete 45 minutes of ZEARN weekly!!

🔬 Science Department Update

6th grade: Our sixth graders continued their energy unit. We completed a neat lab demo with a sealed bottle and thermometers to illustrate how the trapping of greenhouse gases increases the temperature here on Earth. We also discussed energy transformations, and how electricity can transform into different types of energy necessary for everyday life.

7th grade: Our 7th graders tested on their Evolution unit. They began their "Classification of Living Organisms" unit, which we are excited to continue next week. Also, they had a fun "Biology of Love" article to read for a Valentine's Day activity.

8th grade: Our 8th graders tested on their motion unit this week. They will be beginning their "Force" unit next week, and will have some activities. They will be learning about Newton's Laws next week!
