Mr. Macken's Message
Centerville Families,
The move from first semester to second is more than just a turn of the calendar. It is an important milestone. As a parent, I encourage you to pause and reflect on the growth your child has shown since September.
In elementary school, growth looks different for every child, but it is always worth celebrating. It is not only about test scores or reading levels. It is about the small, everyday steps that build confidence and character:
- Academic courage: Trying a new math strategy or spelling a difficult word for the first time
- Social connections: Navigating friendships, sharing, and showing empathy on the playground, in the hallways, or in the lunchroom
- Independence: Remembering to hang up a backpack or managing a homework folder
- Resilience: Bouncing back after a tough day or a mistake
We often move quickly to what comes next, but children thrive when they know their effort is noticed. Consider asking your child this week, “What is something you can do now that you could not do at the start of the year?”
When we highlight progress, we help children build a growth mindset and the belief that they can handle new challenges in the months ahead.
Looking forward to seeing you at conferences next week. Thank you for being such important partners in your child’s education.
Go Cougars!
Mike Macken

REMINDERS:
School Board hosts listening session on February 9
In ongoing efforts to gather feedback from stakeholders, the School Board is hosting quarterly Listening Sessions for the public. The sessions provide the opportunity for community members, staff, parents, and students to meet informally with board representatives and the superintendent to discuss topics in the schools. Listening Sessions increase communication and engagement work that reflects the district’s commitment to excellence. Additional sessions to seek input/perspective on topics established by the Board would be scheduled as a special or additional Board Listening Session.
Board members or the superintendent may ask clarifying questions of you as the participant to gain a thorough understanding of your concern, suggestion, or request. If there is any follow-up or response to your comment or suggestion, you will be contacted via email or phone in a timely manner by a member of the board or administration. Please be aware that disrespectful comments or comments of a personal nature, directed at an individual either by name or inference, will not be allowed. Personnel concerns should be directed first to a principal or executive director of the department, then to the executive director of human resources, then to the superintendent, and finally, in writing, to the board.
The last listening session of the school year will be April 20. Sessions are held in the District Office Board Room from 5:30 pm-6:15 pm. More information can be found on the Centennial website.
