5 Habits of Good Readers

  1. GOOD READERS KEEP A BOOK ON HAND: You can't become a better reader if you don't have a book! Have a good book in your backpack at all times.
  2. GOOD READERS TALK ABOUT BOOKS: Tell your bestie, your classmates, your parent, or your teachers about books that you find interesting. You'll find they may start sharing their own good finds for you to check out or even try one of your recs! Keep those book conversations going.
  3. GOOD READERS READ CONSISTENTLY: Avoid reading slumps! Carve time in your busy schedule for daily reading, like before bed for example. If it's a part of your daily habits, you won't forget to do it.
  4. GOOD READERS READ FOR FUN: Don't waste time on books you don't like. The more you read, the better you'll find what genres of books you really enjoy. See Mrs. Alvarez for recommendations or go to whatshouldireadnext.com and enter some of your favorite titles to get read-alike suggestions!
  5. GOOD READERS PLAN AHEAD: You should always have your next book "on deck." Visit the library during your breaks and browse the shelves. Remember, you can have up to three books checked out. Check online book reviews, "Booktok" and "Bookstagram" can help you find what's popular with teen readers.

A GOOD GIRL'S GUIDE TO MURDER by Holly Jackson

AR 5.4, 16 pts

Everyone in Fairview knows the story.

Pretty and popular high school senior Andie Bell was murdered by her boyfriend, Sal Singh, who then killed himself. It was all anyone could talk about. And five years later, Pip sees how the tragedy still haunts her town.

But she can't shake the feeling that there was more to what happened that day. She knew Sal when she was a child, and he was always so kind to her. How could he possibly have been a killer?

Now a senior herself, Pip decides to reexamine the closed case for her final project, at first just to cast doubt on the original investigation. But soon she discovers a trail of dark secrets that might actually prove Sal innocent . . . and the line between past and present begins to blur. Someone in Fairview doesn't want Pip digging around for answers, and now her own life might be in danger (Goodreads).
