Principal's Corner Principal's Corner

This Friday is an important day on the school calendar. We will be celebrating our Grade 12 students with their Farewell ceremony. We are excited to honour this wonderful group and look forward to seeing them all dressed up for their big day. We wish them the very best on this momentous occasion and hope all of our Grade 12 families enjoy a safe and happy weekend. A special thank you to Mrs. Walker for her hard work coordinating the event and ensuring everything runs smoothly.

Tomorrow, we will be holding our community clean-up. Classes will be responsible for tidying the school grounds and areas around town. As a thank-you for their efforts, students will receive a popsicle courtesy of the Town of Daysland.

As May arrives, we are preparing to begin our Provincial Achievement Tests. Although exams won’t start until the end of the month, students have been preparing throughout the year and will continue to do so in the final months. Support from home is always appreciated. Please stay connected to PowerSchool to monitor assignments and help students focus on areas that need attention as we approach the end of the school year.

In the coming weeks, many classes will be heading out on year-end excursions. On May 22nd, our K–9 students will travel to Viking to attend a Pow Wow at the Viking Arena. More details will be shared soon.

As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the office.

International Travel International Travel

Our International Travel Club recently returned from Peru, and we can't stop telling all kinds of great stories about our adventures there! We enjoyed good food, luscious green scenery, interesting information, super warm temperatures (and VERY high humidity!), beautiful vistas, and most of all, fabulous company. Big thanks to Mrs. V. Zimmer, Mrs. C. Tobler, Mr. B. Pastachak, and Mrs. Lilliam Mairena for organizing and helping guide the 18 students through the amazing country, and for EF for providing the best guide, Giscard. The Friends of Daysland School Society played a big part in the success of this trip, as well, providing us with large fundraising opportunities and funds for the bus to the airport. We all had a great time!

b) Room Rep Reports:

Kindergarten (submitted by Hannah Stefanishion): Mrs. Tanton - No update.

Grade 1 (submitted by Chantelle Hayes): Camy Lang - Our class has adjusted well to the switching of teachers. We have been making great gains with our reading and writing skills lately. We focus on the UFLI methods and it is a wonderful program. We are learning about honey bees and expect to have a couple of beekeepers come to our class for a presentation in the coming weeks. We will also be planting flowers in the near future! We are in the midst of planning our year end field trip, we are just trying to finalize the details. We will be visiting the Rosalind Hutterite Colony!

Grade 2 (submitted by Laura Zwack): Mrs. Schlaut - Everything is running smoothly in grade two. We have been working on improving our reading skills by doing some Reader's Theatre in our classroom. It has been fun to learn how to read and act at the same time. We are focusing on how to write an informational text for the last couple of weeks. We are starting to put everything we learned together and we will write about seahorses. We are just about finished our Patterns unit in math. We have been learning about light energy in Science and focusing on the community of Meteghan in social. We have been working on some Easter projects that will be going home tomorrow that we have had lots of fun creating. Swimming lessons will begin the first week in May.

Grade 3 (submitted by Kristie Nahajowich): Mrs. Schmidt-Teigen - We had a lot of fun breaking routine last week to head to the pool for swimming lessons. We have also been having a lot of fun researching a biographical figure to present to friends and family and the Grade 2 class this week in the learning commons. In Math we are learning to tell time, in Science we will be constructing our own simple machines in the makerspace, and in Social Studies we are learning about the last of the four countries, Tunisia. On May 8th we head to Telus World of Science for our class trip. Thanks to School Council for contributing funds towards that! We're looking forward to it.

Grade 4 (Alison Eshpeter): Mr. Charchun - In ELA this week we will be writing our good copies of our narratives. We have our grammar test over adjectives this week and of course our weekly spelling test as well. Bonus spelling word this week is: characteristics. Both of these will be on Thursday. In Science we had our Unit Test on Living Systems and we will then begin our Earth Systems Unit in class. In Math we have started our new Geometry Unit. We will be looking at naming different shapes and learning how to measure various types of angles while being able to name those angles as well. In Social Studies we are in our Alberta: Celebrations and Challenges Unit. This unit explores what makes our province unique and some of the history behind how Alberta became a province.

Grade 5 (Kirby Schmidt-Teigen): Mrs. Thomas/Mr. Wilson - In ELA this month in Grade 5 we have been working on writing informational reports, learning how to find information online to support our ideas and referencing where we get our information. In Science, we have wrapped up our study of space and move on to Weather and Climate. We have a field trip our to the pond coming up in a few weeks, which will be run by the Battle River Watershed Alliance. They have developed some programming for the new science curriculum and are coming to us! They will be teaching us about and giving us some hands-on experiences, with weather watching, water storage on the landscape, and measuring soil moisture. In Math, we have been working on dividing 2 and 3 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. The kids are absolutely loving the process of ling division. We will keep working on mastering this important skill. Next, we will be starting to work with improper fractions, as well as adding and subtracting fractions. The grade 5s have swimming lessons and Circle Square Ranch coming up.

Grade 6 (Brenda McKay): Mrs. McKay - Everything is moving along well in grade 6. We are thinking ahead to PATs and starting to prepare by doing lots of writing in ELA. In Math, we are wrapping up a unit tomorrow and have three more to finish before the end of the year. In Science, we have been learning about climate change and are currently completing a whole-class collaborative slideshow on extreme weather events around Canada and the world. In Social Studies, we are learning about the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. We just completed making our very own wampum belts with symbols to represent ourselves. Everyone enjoyed this project very much. We are looking forward to swimming lessons and our field trip to Circle Square Ranch!

Grade 7/8 (Cristin Zimmer): No update.

Grade 9 (Candice Guhle): No update.

Grade 10 (Carrie Carriere): Mrs. Walker - In Math, Grade 10s are working through the relations and functions unit. They've completed one chapter and are now working on equations on linear functions.

Grade 11 (Teena Kasha): Mrs. M. Zimmer - In Math we are finishing up unit 6, students will have a chapter test in one week! We have 3 units left but they are a bit easier, as well as shorter.

Grade 12 (Jeannie Hoermann): Mrs. Walker - In Biology, the Grade 12s are starting their study of genetics and heredity. Over the next few weeks, they will be looking at different inheritance patterns and analyzing family trees. In Physics, the Grade 12s are just about to start the electromagnetism unit. We will be looking at how magnets are affected by electric current. For graduation ceremonies, we are in the final stages of planning. Parents should expect a few more email updates with the specific timeline for the week leading up to and the day of the ceremony. Mr. Pastachak - In Social 30, students have been watching videos and taking notes on Economics. Specifically, Welfare Capitalism and the rise and fall of the Stock Market in the 20's and 30's. Over the next week or so, we are moving on to talk about the "opponents to liberalism" that being Communism and Facism. Students will be assigned Photo Essay on either Nazi Germany or the USSR.
