Happy Friday, Chapelfield Families.

I want to send a huge shout out to our PTO that has been working hard for Chapelfield. The Read-A-Thon is just one event that they lead in order to raise funds for our students, teachers, and families. Please make sure to pass on your child's information with your friends and families this weekend by sharing this website . We are getting close to our $18,500 goal. The money they raise allow us to purchase decodable books, classroom libraries, playground equipment, pay off lunch balances for families that need support, etc. We are so honored to have such a dedicated and motivated parent/family body that supports our Chapelfield Lion Community. Thank you! If you want to get involved, please follow PTO on facebook at https://m.facebook.com/chapelfieldpto/ or email Andrea Agan @ chapelfield.elementary.pto@gmail.com. It takes a village to support our students' learning and development.

Sincerely,

Nikki Miller

Dear 3rd Grade Families,

Each year in October, schools across Ohio are required to administer the Fall Grade 3 Reading Ohio State Test to students. The intent of this assessment is to gather a pulse on where each student is with regard to expectations outlined in the Third Grade Reading Guarantee which aims to ensure all students are reading on grade level prior to entering fourth grade.

All Gahanna-Jefferson schools will be administering the Fall Grade 3 Reading OST on Tuesday, October 17 and Wednesday, October 18. The state test is given in an online format and includes two 90-minute tests. We encourage parents to ensure your student receives a good night of sleep and a healthy breakfast to help prepare for the assessment.

If you have any questions, please contact your building principal.

Sincerely,

Tia P. Holliman

Hello Chapelfield Families!

It is so important for us to continually model emotional regulation for kids. No one is perfect at this. The times we get caught up in our own big feelings, we have the opportunity to show kids what it looks like to go back and mend any hurt feelings with others afterwards. Here are some examples of things you can say to your child:

  • "I can feel in my body that I am having big feelings. I am going to take a 10 minute* break to calm down and then I will come back to talk to you."

  • "I can tell we are both having big feelings about this. Let's take some deep breaths together before we keep talking. (or take a walk, take a break, etc.)

  • "I got upset and yelled. I am sorry you heard me yell. That was probably scary for you. Next time I will take a break to calm down so I don't yell. I don't like the way it feels and I know you don't either."

  • "I am feeling frustrated right now. I need to take a break from this conversation. Can we come back in 30 minutes* to talk more about it then?"

*Always set a time when you will come back together so the child doesn't think it will just be dropped. Coming back together to talk is important.

This month I visited all classrooms for our second guidance lesson of the year. In the primary grades (K-2), we discussed active listening and specific strategies to listen with our ears, eyes, and hearts. In 3rd grade, we learned all about growth mindset and how to adopt a "bubblegum brain"--stretching, growing, and encouraging flexibility, just like bubblegum! In 4-5, we learned all about responsibility--doing what we should do, when we should do it! We discussed how our choices can have a chain reaction and either positively or negatively affect ourselves and others.

GRIN is a local community service that supports Gahanna residents in need. Here is a handout with information about the services they provide. If your family is in need, feel free to reach out to Mrs. Jasin (jasink@gjps.org) and she can connect you with additional resources.

If you have concerns and would like me to meet with your child, please fill out the Parent Referral Form which can also be found on the GJPS Chapelfield website under the

Counseling tab.

Best,

Krysten Jasin

Message from Mr. Scheibeck Message from Mr. Scheibeck

Hello CES families,

I hope everyone is doing well! Over the past few weeks, we have been working on our throwing skills. Last week was a lot of fun as we were learning how to throw different objects (frisbees, footballs, foam tennis balls and bean bags). Each object required a different type of throw. At the end of class, we discussed some of the differences. I asked students what they noticed and what they did differently with each item to have success. For example, many of the students noticed that a foam tennis ball would not knock down a target because of how light they are. Other students felt it was easier to knock down a target with a football because of the way it bounced after it hit the ground. It was great hearing all of their thoughts as they began to learn that each item required a different skill set to have success.

I am seeing less and less crocs and sandals being worn on P.E. days! Thank you everyone for keeping safety in mind. Safety is my number one priority and I do appreciate everyone's help.

Thank you everyone and have a fantastic weekend!
