REMINDERS

TABLETS: PLEASE have your child plug in their tablet every single night. We've had many kids come to school unprepared because their tablets have not been charged. We use them every day and need them to be fully charged. Thanks for helping with this.

PENCILS: We have lots of students coming to class without pencils, saying they don't have anymore. Please check with your child to ensure they have the supplies they need for class. Thanks!

SPRING: Although the weather is getting nicer, we still have lots of school left. Please encourage your child to finish strong, keep their Tiger Traits, and practice healthy habits to be successful until the end!

Pipestone

The 5th grade class, along with the 5th grade advisory teachers and support staff, will be heading to Pipestone, MN. Students will be visiting the Pipestone National Monument to learn more about Native American significance and religious beliefs of the region, their cultures and traditions, as well as the different types of rocks that can be found there and their purpose/use for the Native Americans. Students will get to tour the grounds as well as the video and museum inside the tourist center. Lunch and an annual advisory photoshoot will take place at the historic Three Maiden’s. A spot that consists of three very large rocks with significance to the Native American’s that live/lived in the area. Students will also get the opportunity to travel to the Pipestone County Museum where they will learn more about what it would have been like to live in Southwestern Minnesota during the early parts of our country and state’s establishment. They’ll get to see what a house would have looked like on the prairie, ways of living, as well as how they both evolved over the years. The final stop on the trip will be to Fort Pipestone where students will be greeted by staff and a story of the history of the fort and why it was built. Every year the staff and students look forward to this trip and the information and memories that are made on it.

Please be on the look-out for a lunch questionnaire/permission form to be returned to your child's advisor.

How You Can Help

  • Ensure your child gets a good sleep the weeks of testing. It's a long five weeks, and rest is a must!
  • Ensure they eat a healthy breakfast the mornings of testing (if able--we have breakfast options at school too)!
  • Make sure your child gets to school on time. Block 1 starts at 8:00 AM sharp.
  • Send them a note of encouragement—we will give them time to read before we start the test!

What We Are Learning What We Are Learning

SCIENCE

Science students will be learning about simple machines and how they are important to our every day lives. They will also be learning about weathering, erosion, and deposition and how our Earth’s surface is constantly changing.

We are approaching the MCA test that your child will take on April 30 and May 1. Please remind your child to get his/ her study island assignments completed before then.

LANGUAGE ARTS

In Language Arts, we are and will be working on reading skills textual evidence, plot, and figurative language, as well as word study skills using greek and latin roots. We will be doing some preparations for the upcoming state testing as well as reading another novel. We will focus on comparing elements of stories (characters, plot, setting, etc.) and finishing the year strong!

MATH

In April, we will be finishing up our geometry unit by working on volume and surface area of rectangular prisms. We will then move into a short unit on coordinate planes. At the end of April we will be taking our math MCA test. We will be finishing up our study islands by the end of April, so please continue to work on those.

BAND/ORCHESTRA

Orchestra: Orchestra students have been working on learning new notes on the G String using warmups and the song “G Street Rock”

Band: Students continue to progress on their instruments as we prepare several new selections for our upcoming concert. Students recently started playing the Bb scale as their daily warm-up.

Band Concert: May 16

Orchestra Concert: May 23

PHYSICAL EDUCATION/HEALTH

In PE, students will be completing our mid-semester test in 5 areas of physical fitness. We complete curl ups to test our abdominal strength; shuttle run to test our speed and agility; sit and reach to test our lower back and hamstring flexibility; pull ups to test our upper body strength; lastly, a one mile run to test our cardiovascular endurance. The goal for each student is to see improvement in 3 out of 5 areas that we test in. We will complete our final fitness test before the end of the school year.

We recently completed an elimination bracket challenge and also did a unit of bowling. Students learned how to keep score while bowling, too. We are looking forward to getting outside to complete our line soccer unit and if weather permits, we will hopefully be able to complete an unit of disc golf.

In Health we recently finished our unit on Peer Pressure and Decision Making. This is a valuable lesson for 5th graders; learning how to make decisions on their own and how to problem solve is a great life skill to continue to work on. In our next unit, we will be learning about nutrition and how to make healthy choices that lead to lifelong healthy habits.
