HB 5649 has been signed!

HB 5649 has been signed! This will require all high schools in Michigan to offer a computer science course. Take a look over what MDE has released and I would suspect that we will get more information from them in time.

WHEN DO SCHOOLS HAVE TO PUT THIS IN PLACE

Beginning in the school year 2027-28. This gives districts plenty of time to plan, do curriculum reviews, and designate an instructor for the class. MiSTEM Advisory Council Grants - Computer Science Collaborative is providing no-cost-to professional learning to help instructors.

CSforMichigan Collaborative

The Collaborative is working on a one-page document that will help folks about the bill and what supports/resources are available. More to come about how the Collaborative will work with partners to communicate this out over the next year.

Announcing the Winter 2025 Great Lakes Place-Based Education Institute!

Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative (GLSI), a Michigan-based leader in the field of place-based education, is thrilled to share the launch of the Great Lakes Place-Based Education Institute, now accepting applications from K-12 teachers throughout the Great Lakes basin for our Winter 2025 cohort!

The institute is offered remotely for K-12 classroom teachers interested in taking their next (or first) steps with place-based education, deepening their own Great Lakes and environmental literacy, and discovering models, strategies, and support for taking student learning beyond the classroom. 30 full scholarships are available to provide cost-free access to the institute. Scholarships also come with $200 participation stipends, follow-on coaching and project support, and an exclusive community of practice group in GLSI's online place-based education community platform, The Place Space.

More Details...

Participant learning will be centered in Place-Based Stewardship Education, a model for formal place-based teaching and learning developed by GLSI and implemented with hundreds of schools each year in Michigan and across the Great Lakes region. Program facilitation and follow-on support will be led by Patty Tolly, GLSI Director of Programs & Educator Networks. Patty brings 30 years of classroom teaching experience and more than 15 years of innovative place-based teaching and learning with her students. Learn more about the GLSI team.

The institute will consist of weekly virtual learning sessions on Zoom, taking place Wednesdays from 4:30-6:00pm ET from February 12 - March 19. Applications are accepted and scholarships filled on a rolling basis! Please direct all questions to institute@greatlakesstewardship.org.

Funding support for this program is provided by NOAA Great Lakes B-WET and the Pisces Foundation.
