A message from your principal/Un mensaje de su directora

Dear Stonewall-Flanders Community,

Beyond learning academics, reading has a myriad of benefits. According to research, by reading to children every night from a very young age, they have the potential of being exposed to 290,000 words before they even enter kindergarten. Reading to children not only helps to build vocabulary, but also comes with a myriad of other benefits. It helps build their cognitive development, exposing them to language that they wouldn’t get just from hearing daily conversations. Did you know that reading to children helps build empathy? By exposing children to the life experiences of others, their diverse backgrounds and cultures, children can learn to see the world from a variety of perspectives. But of all the benefits reading to children may have, the most special would be that of strengthening the child-parent bond. Nothing is more comforting to a child than snuggling up, or sitting close, as mom, grandpa or Tia Maria read them a story. So as we look forward to our family literacy night this week, remember that just sitting and reading a book together go a long way to childrens’ academic and as well as personal growth. What book will you read with your kids this week?

Go Falcons!

As you may remember from previous newsletters, our PreK dismissal was moved to a different location with the safety of students as the foremost priority. In order to transport little ones, either by foot or by car, we needed a space that allowed more room for parent pick ups. This was accomplished by moving them to the K-1 hallway, as the space out in front of that hallway is much more ample. The “kink” we’re still working on is in regards to the flow of traffic. We remind everyone that, if you have a PK card, please join the innermost line of cars along the curb in front of the school. This allows us to put your PreKer straight into your vehicle and minimize having to cross lanes to bring your little one to your car. Be sure to display your car tag visibly on your dashboard so that Officer Murad can see it clearly from far away and can better direct your vehicle to the appropriate car lane. Also, please watch for our staff along the curb as they direct you to move up as far as possible. This will allow us to line up and load at least 4 cars of PreKers at a time in order to expedite this process and still be safe. Finally, we ask for everyone’s patience. Student safety is our number one priority. Working as efficiently as we can to load students swiftly is our second goal. We thank you kindly for your cooperation in our efforts to keep students safe and get everyone on their way as soon as possible.

Thank you so much for your continued patience and cooperation during dismissal as we prioritize student safety. As you approach the school, for your safety and the safety of others, please remain in your vehicle, and a staff member will walk your child to your car. Please do not stop your vehicle while in the car lane, as we must keep a continuous flow of traffic moving forward. Please refrain from parking and walking up to the building, as the increased amount of foot traffic at the front of the school contributes to a congested and unsafe environment for our students and staff at dismissal.

Reflections/Reflejos Reflections/Reflejos

We had another successful week of building academics and relationships at Stonewall! Students have been working to increase their academic discourse in all content areas, including science. It is our goal to engage students in critical thinking and sharing their thinking with teachers and peers through structured discourse. After all, we know that how we speak helps with how we write. And academic writing is another important focus at SWF.

Additionally, the athletes from the Harlandale High School Football team gave of their time to help us deliver Brighter Bites veggie bags for our kiddos to take home. We are grateful to Coach Lozano and his kind and respectful athletes for their help and support. Go Indians!

¡Vaya Indios!

Fall Festival Update/Festival de otono, actualizacion

Due to multiple carnivals going on during the evening of November 15, and of course how this affects the availability of booths, we have reverted to our Fall Festival date of Thursday, November 21. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but look forward to seeing everyone there, and having a wonderful night of family and community fellowship. This fun filled event will include costumes, music and dancing and carnival games. It will be centered around our theme for the year “Stronger Together.” Our students will have the opportunity to dress up as characters, fictional or historical, who have been an example of working as a team, or being stronger together. Teachers are having conversations with our students regarding the theme as well as costume ideas. Be on the lookout for our flier with more information, coming out very soon!
