ConVal High School Happenings - September 15, 2023
Message from Principal McKillop
Good Afternoon, Cougar Nation!
It was nice to have our first full five-day week together in school. This week our students had school pictures taken and we had an activity fair during TASC homeroom where students could learn how to get involved here on campus. There were many athletics home games to attend and excitement about the clubs and activities that will be starting up in the near future. Thanks to our teams and families that were adaptable with delays due to weather. I was fortunate to visit many classrooms to say hello to students and to even partake in a few brief activities. Please see some pictures below showcasing some amazing things happening in our classrooms.
Next week, we will be collecting non-perishable food items for the NH Tackles Hunger campaign. Collection bins are located in TASC homerooms and will also be placed at home game events on Friday, September 22. More details are shared below.
I look forward to seeing many of you at our Open House next Thursday evening, September 21, from 6:30 pm-8:00 pm. If you aren't able to join us in person, please know that you can directly reach out to your students' teachers for any updates or questions.
I would encourage you to read through the entire table of contents so you know what is featured in the newsletter. Best of luck to all of our teams competing today. Go Cougars!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Heather

Prismatic Letter
As you may be aware, the ConVal School District is currently looking at configuration options for its schools and has contracted with Prismatic Services to provide an external perspective for that work.
As part of the project, Prismatic Services will be surveying middle and high school students about their experiences in the district during the week of September 25-29, 2023. All of the survey responses will be kept confidential by Prismatic; survey responses will only be provided in aggregate to district staff and the public.
Please see the letter here to grant parental permission for your student to participate in the survey. If you have any questions, please reach out to the main office at (603) 924-3869 where paper copies are available. If you grant permission, please send your student to the main office and have them turn in the form to Ms. Johannesson.
Attendance Procedure/Tardies
Just as a quick reminder, if your student is not coming to school or will be late coming to school, please send an email to cvhs-attendance@conval.edu. Alternatively, please call our office at (603) 924-3869, ext 3232.

Academic Honors
We’re celebrating our own Anneliese Strong, one of 72,000 students from across the country who earned academic honors from College Board’s National Recognition Programs! They received an award from the National Rural and Small Town Award (NRSTA). The National Recognition Programs honor the strong academic achievements of underrepresented students. They’re an easy way for students to showcase their hard work in high school. The programs not only benefit students. They also benefit colleges looking to recruit diverse, talented students.
There’s so much that makes students like Anneliese unique. That’s an asset to colleges and programs. The National Recognition Programs help students like Anneliese find ways to celebrate that. Eligible students apply on BigFuture. They have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. They’re the top 10% of PSAT/NMSQT® or PSAT™ 10 assessment takers in each state for each program or have earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP® Exams. They either attend school in a rural area or small town, or identify as African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, or Indigenous/Native. They’re invited to apply during their sophomore or junior year. Students who are awarded recognition will be notified at the beginning of the next school year.
Congratulations, Anneliese!

School Counseling Curriculum
As part of the School Counseling curriculum, counselors meet with seniors in their TASC homerooms to review the college application process. Shown here is Mrs. Dunn presenting a "College Application - 101" slideshow to students in Mrs. Pacheco's homeroom.
College Composition Class
Mrs. Harris' College Composition class, senior Charlie Savage explains his corrections to a sentence. Students are working on identifying and correcting coordinating conjunctions.
Intro to Business Class
Students in Mrs. Coyne' Intro to Business class worked on their Channel of Distribution projects, creating visual displays that chart how products are made. For example, one student chose pickles and depicted the origin of each ingredient as well as the materials for the containers, how these elements were combined, and then the final product.
Woodworking Class
Students in Mr. Gil Morris's Woodworking class are creating their first projects: speaker boxes for different phone models. The students are learning how they can amplify sound without electronics, by drilling channels into wood boxes they create using the drill press, table saw, router, jointer, and planer.
Physical Science Class
This week in Ms. Bird's Physical Science class, students are learning about using graphs to express data visually. Students are being asked to determine the dependent and independent variables and how to make a variety of graphs from that data. Ms. Bird is reviewing the characteristics of "good" scientific graphs. Students are reviewing the components of proper scientific conclusion: CERUN (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning, Uncertainty, New) and how the graphs they are creating can be used in this process.
3D Studio Art Class
In Ms. Tebbetts’ 3D Studio Art class, students are working on paper sculptures. Before engaging in the creative process on their own, students were given instruction and provided examples of various paper sculpture techniques including: accordion fold, wave cuts, 3D shapes, origami etc. As students began their individual creations, they were also enjoying the collaborative nature of the class and were helping one another with ideas and providing feedback.
Annual Club Fair
This past Monday during TASC Conval students and staff participated in their annual club fair. Thank you to all the students and advisors that helped make it a great morning.
