SSL Member Update
April 2023
Hello to all!
As I wrote this, I was sitting in the Salt Lake City Airport waiting for my flight home to JFK. Mini-family emergency required 'Grammy' to help out with my granddaughters. But I've been answering emails and texts in preparation for upcoming events. It's been a fast-moving year!
Looking ahead, I know our 2023 Conference Co-Chairs, Kathy Starks, Teena Lauth, and Alicia Sherman, are super busy making ironing out all the details for our upcoming Spring Conference in Binghamton. If you're joining us, I am very excited to see everyone!! While we may not have met, I look forward to chatting and getting to know you. Our VP of Conferences, Annarose Foley, is also pitching in with energy and knowledge to ensure another rockin' conference. Of course, we can't forget the Awards Chair, Dawn Pressimone, and Knickerbocker Chair, Tara-Thibault Edmonds, who have channeled time and energy to make certain all awards winners are honored. And our fabulous Sharon Fox, VP of Communications, keeps us in the loop at all times. There are many moving parts to consider with any conference, and I know our Conferences Co-Chairs have an abundant support system with many helping out. To all, I thank you for your efforts. Your work does not go unnoticed.
In about 7 weeks, we'll be looking forward to finalizing another year in our school libraries. While you're taking a break from the academic year, consider re-filling your professional bucket with a trip to Syracuse for the Ed Leadership Institute late July; shout out to the co-chairs, Sara Kelly Johns and Lisa Perkowski working very hard to ensure yet another winner for us all—more info to follow.
Anytime I attend these events, I make new friends and learn a great deal to take back to my school and district. According to a recent issue of Knowledge Quest, they addressed how engaging with your professional community allows you to realize that we're all experiencing the same or similar issues. When you Increase your connections by attending SSL events, you'll walk away feeling enlightened, empowered, and energized! I love that, and honestly, that's how I feel after every conference or institute.
Please know the SSL Board is hard at work, making decisions, planning for the future, and coordinating with NYLA to ensure our policies and procedures are up-to-date. Shout out to Policy Chair Lisa Perkowski for her tremendous efforts!
Hope to see you in Binghamton and Syracuse!! So excited!! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me.
Yours in solidarity,
Madelyn Haussner

NYLA/SSL Carol A. Kearney Educational Leadership Institute
Breaking Barriers: Going Beyond Media Literacy with a DEI Lens
2023 Carol A. Kearney NYLA/SSL Educational Leadership Institute
July 27-28, Syracuse
Interested in enhancing your media literacy instruction skills with a critical focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)? Join us for the 2023 Carol A. Kearney Educational Leadership Institute, July 27-28 in Syracuse to take a needed K-12 dive into media literacy, focusing on DEI in every aspect of media.
The Institute, Breaking Barriers: Going Beyond Media Literacy with a DEI Lens will explore the intersection of media literacy and DEI by examining creators of media, audience, focus, voices, representation, and more. Led by school librarian and podcaster Tom Bober, author of Building News Literacy, you will learn more about the media itself--who is creating it and why, what are their financial motivations, who is being left out, what voices are being represented (and why)—while learning how to interact with media content through a DEI lens and developing strategies for empowering your students to become critical and informed media consumers, incorporating respect, inclusivity, and empathy into their role as media users, connectors, and producers.
