Rogers Reminders 11/11/22

Fall Picture Retake Day

Reminder - IDs Are Required For All Visitors To Campus

In a continuous effort to maintain the highest level of safety and security for students on our campus, Frisco ISD requires that all visitors present an ID when coming to campus.

This is true for parents picking up sick students, parents checking students out for appointments, and parents coming for lunch, Mystery Reader, or GMR. Thank you for your understanding as we continue to make Rogers Elementary a safe and secure place for students and staff to learn.

FOOD DRIVE EXTENDED!

We are still collecting food items to benefit our community partner, Frisco Family Services. All items donated will be used to design and create a putt putt coarse "boarder" for students to play a putt-putt tournament during the week of 11/28 - 12/2. Following the tournament, all food will be delivered to Frisco Family Services.

The vision for this project is to provide all students the opportunity to serve others while designing and building a putt putt course for a grade level tournament during PE class.

It is our goal to raise more food donations than ever before to support this event! We encourage each grade level to bring 300+ items of food to donate to Frisco Family Services.

- The grade level with the most donations will win the opportunity to design/build an additional hole in the putt putt course.

News From the Nurse

Flu and cold season are upon us and to add to it, Fall allergies look a lot like cold symptoms. It can be a challenge determining when your child is sick or when they are suffering from allergies. Allergies may come and go but can be easily treated with over-the-counter allergy medications, so your student is not suffering from continuous runny nose, sore throat, or disruptive clearing cough due to congestion in the throat while trying to learn. Please monitor your students at home for fever, multiple cold symptoms including uncontrolled cough and runny nose, and sore throats with swelling, redness and visible drainage. Please help us keep illness at bay by keeping your student at home if they are showing signs of illness.

Please send doctor notes for attendance purposes!

Be Proactive about Lice!

Lice are pesky parasites and although these insects cannot jump or fly, they can be transmitted from one child to another via head-to-head contact, or the sharing of hats, combs, brushes, etc. We need your help to stop lice before it makes its way into the school. Please examine your child(ren) on a regular basis for itching, lice or nits. A child with active head lice most likely will also have eggs (called nits) attached to the hair shaft. They are teardrop in shape, grayish-white in color, and very small. They are glued to the hair and cannot be washed or brushed out like dandruff. The nits are usually seen behind the ears and the nape of the neck.

Early detection and removal of head lice and their eggs (nits) is the best way to control head lice. If your child is found to have head lice, a treatment must be applied to the hair. Family members should also be checked for head lice & treated if lice are found. Please contact the school nurse as soon as you learn that your child has lice. The hair must be treated before returning to school, the nurse will check for active lice before returning to class, and the hair must be retreated in 7 days to ensure re-infestation has not occurred. Per policy a notification letter will be sent home to the classroom if one case of active lice is found in that class.

What is the Principal's Club for Math & Reading?

MATH CLUB:

Rogers students will be recognized for their progress & mastery of the different levels of mastery related to math fact fluency. We all know how important it is to have a strong understanding of math facts in our daily lives. We want to encourage our young learns to reach these goals and be recognized for their successes.

Each time a student requests to be assessed on their math facts, they will have the opportunity to join a level of the Principal's Club. For each level of the club they will be recognized in the following ways:

READING CLUB:

Rogers students will be recognized for their reading progress after making a level of growth. Students can further develop their reading engagement, fluency and comprehension by reading or being read to nightly. As students growth in reading levels, the will be "leveling up" into the Principal's Reading Club. Supporting their guided reading practice at home is a great way to encourage progress.

As students display reading growth during their small group instruction time, their teacher will be monitoring their progress. Depending on the child's age/grade, a level of growth can range between 1 1/2 month or more. Click here for a growth chart by reading level.

WAYS WE WILL RECOGNIZE OUR GROWTH IN PRINCIPAL'S CLUB:

  • Rogers' morning video announcements by name
  • Cheered on in main hallway for a group photo that week and their name goes on a hallway display board (math mountain & reading race)
  • Receive a luggage "brag" tag/keychain for their back pack with their level indicated with a color bead or star sticker
  • Monthly club celebration with Principal Penny
  • Group photo will be posted in that week's edition of the Rogers Reminders for recognition of their hard work
  • Asked to stand and be recognized at future GMR Celebration of Learning assemblies for their hard work and academic progress

Students will be recognized for being a part of the Principal's Club on the follow dates. Having these dates may be helpful as you set family goals at home to make progress with math facts.

Mystery Reader Program Launch

The Mystery Reader program at Rogers Elementary provides parents/grandparents the opportunity to directly volunteer in their child's classroom. If you are interested in serving in this capacity, please ensure to complete a background check at least one week PRIOR to visiting your student's classroom.

A Mystery Reader program is ta guest reader, BUT their identity is kept secret to build anticipation and excitement. Teachers may even choose to give clues before they arrive to get the students extra excited!

One of the benefits of starting a guest reader program is that students LOVE welcoming others into their classroom. It is also a great way to mix things up and add a little spice our reading instruction. Students will hear fluent reading and another voice from a different adult. We have received feedback that family members and other significant adults love coming to see their Rogers students in action. An added benefit is that students will get to practice hosting others and sending thank you notes after the guest reader’s visit.

FISD Board Policy requires that each volunteer and/or mentor undergo a background check before working with students. You will be prompted to complete the background check during your VOLY account creation process. Keep an eye on your inbox for your background check approval (the process can take up to 3-5 business days). Once approved, you will be able to sign up directly for volunteer opportunities through the VOLY platform. To volunteer at Rogers Elementary, you will need to create a VOLY account by visiting https://friscoisd.voly.org.

Get Ready: Rising 6th Graders

In December, academic counseling will begin for the 5th graders to get them ready for middle school. Ms. Bocian will meet with the students to discuss strengths, weaknesses, and goals. Also, the students will start to think about which classes they might want to take in 6th grade. The middle school counselors will be coming to Rogers in January to give the students more information, which I will then be sharing with the 5th grade parents.

Common Mental Health Myths by Children’s Health

NOVEMBER’S CHARACTER TRAIT - GRATITUDE

Why does gratitude matter?

When you feel gratitude, you feel a sense of abundance. When you express gratitude—especially when it’s heartfelt— you strengthen your relationships with others. Grateful people are happier and more fulfilled. And gratitude leads you to be nicer to other people: more cooperative, patient, and trusting.

Pulse Check: Think about how your day is going. How many of these things are true? I said “thank you” to someone. I said something nice to show my appreciation. I can list lots of people and things that I’m lucky to have in my life. I noticed when someone helped me. I felt a sense of thankfulness.

How do I encourage gratitude in others?

Model it. Talk about the good things that happen to you: “I love this gorgeous spring day!” Reframe difficulties by highlighting positive aspects: “Work has been stressful lately, but I’m grateful that my boss trusts me with important responsibilities.”

Celebrate it. Acknowledge when someone demonstrates: “It makes me feel really great when you thank me for what I am doing.” Display thank you notes you’ve received where others can see them. Post Three Good Things on social media.

Enable it. Keep stationery handy for writing thank you notes. At dinner, make it a habit to begin by sharing one good thing that happened that day. Establish a birthday ritual to write notes of appreciation.

FISD Achieve Mentoring Program

If you have a child who may benefit from a menor, please contact Sera Bocian at bocians@friscoisd.org.

Achieve mentors are trained to empower at-risk students to develop greater capacity and skill to build and maintain positive relationships, set goals, make responsible decisions and connect within the community. Achieve mentors equip students to be future ready with FISD Character Strength Curriculum, while supporting the development of the whole child. By acting with integrity and empathy, mentors are a consistent and positive relationship source that empowers students to create connections within the school community and access to wraparound support services.

The FISD Achieve Mentoring program unites caring and committed adults from across the community to provide student support, inspire future success in school and life, and to elevate students beyond any limitation.

If you would like more information or if you would like to be a mentor, please see the Frisco Guidance & Counseling Website.

FREE Resources

Frisco ISD has many wonderful resources for families who might benefit from extra services and support. We offer free or reduced lunch/breakfast for your child, and we have organizations that can help if your child needs food at home, clothing, hygiene items, or school supplies. Each organization has a sign-up process, and I would be HAPPY to help you with this process if need be. Here is a link to my website where you can find information about these resources. Or you can email me at bocians@friscoisd.org.
