SBA Information SBA Information

Each spring, students in Washington State take the SBA (Smarter Balanced Assessment).

This is an important measure of student growth in the areas of reading, writing, math, and science (5th grade).

Garfield staff and students have been preparing all year to ensure readiness and familiarity with the test format.

If your student is in third, fourth, or fifth grade, they take the SBA. Here are some tips for helping your student(s) be well prepared:

  1. Ensure a good night’s sleep (8-10 hours if possible).
  2. Dress comfortably.
  3. Students may bring headphones with a cord from home (no wireless headphones).
  4. Smart watches or phones are prohibited in testing locations.
  5. Students are provided snacks, but they can bring food from home.
  6. Arrive on time to school.
  7. Reassure nervous feelings by sharing that the SBA is only one measure of growth. “Do your best” is our motto.

Students in grades 3-5 will be participating in Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) in English language arts and mathematics. Students in grade 5 will also participate in the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS).

Testing Schedule

May 5, 12,13 4th and 5th Grade ELA SBA

May 6, 7, 14, 20 3rd Grade ELA SBA

May 19, 21 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Math SBA

It is important that we setup our students for success on this important assessment opportunity. Students should be well-rested, ready each testing day to give their best. We are also as a school working on our Tiger Pride theme of the month, Team Tiger. We are a team and we support one another to do our best! Thank you for helping us ensure our Tigers can give their best to ROCK the TEST!

News from our Librarian News from our Librarian

Dear families,

It is that time of year. May 29th is the last day for our students to check out books in our library! Let’s make sure our library continues to be filled with amazing books for our students.

If a book is lost, remind your student not to panic and that honesty is always the best policy. Most books are not lost, simply misplaced. Check your car, backpack, and places you frequently visit.

If the book is lost or damaged beyond repair, you have options:

  • Replace the book with a new copy of the same title. (Books can be purchased at Amazon, your favorite bookstore, etc.) Bring the book to Mrs. French and I’ll barcode it and readd it to our collection.

  • Pay for the book through our district’s online payment system. Mrs. French will then replace the book with those funds.

Go to our school website.

Click the library tab.

“Pay Library Fine”

  • 3. Ask for a district waiver form for financial hardship or other reason. These are available in the office or from Mrs. French. Please reach out with any questions.

Thank you for returning our books and sharing the book joy!

Mrs. French
