A Message From Principal Miller
Dear Families,
What an exciting week we have had at school! We celebrated Lunar New Year, enjoyed a wonderful play performance by our 4th and 5th graders, shared in Valentine’s Day fun, and—of course—many students were buzzing about the Super Bowl win and parade. Lunchtime has also been full of excitement as students have loved watching the Olympics together! And that’s just the beginning.
Our classrooms have been full of incredible learning:
- 2nd graders have been using the STEAM Lab to design characters for their narrative stories.
- 3rd graders are continuing to dive into their heritage projects.
- 4th graders have jumped into their poetry unit with great enthusiasm.
- And our 5th graders are eagerly looking forward to their field trip to MOHAI to end the week.
If you’re in the building, I hope you’ll take a moment to look at the beautiful artwork and student work displayed in the halls—especially the Maya Angelou writing project created by class buddies in Ms. Adams’ and Ms. Johnson’s classrooms. Their writing is truly impressive.
I also want to encourage as many students as possible to take part in our upcoming Math Fair! It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to explore a math topic of interest while applying their technology, art, and math skills. Flyers went home last week, and if your child is looking for something engaging to do over break, a math project is a great option.
A big thank you to all of the parent volunteers who helped make our Lunar New Year celebration such a special evening for our families. I also want to thank the parents who have been helping with the play in the mornings—your support makes a tremendous difference.
Speaking of the play, what a fantastic job the students did! We will be sending out information about 2nd and 3rd grade play sign‑ups soon. Rehearsals won’t begin until April, so we’ll share more details in late March or early April. One thing we learned from this season is that 53 participants is simply too many, so we will need to reduce the number of students for the spring production.
Thank you again for your ongoing support. It’s been a joyful and celebratory week, and we are grateful to share these experiences with your children.

Dear Decatur Parent/Guardian:
The Cascade Bicycle Club (www.cascade.org) supports a bicycle and pedestrian safety curriculum called “Let’s Go”. It’s delivered district-wide in 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Physical Education class. Our Decatur unit will be from Wednesday, March 4 to Monday, March 23.
Volunteers are needed and greatly appreciated during this important unit. Please be sure you are already preapproved and have volunteer this year at Decatur. If not, check with the main office on getting approved. I truly hope volunteers will sign up for days and times they are available, even if it’s helping a class that is not your own. Volunteers do not need to be “bike people” or even know how to ride a bike. For example, volunteers help kids put their helmets on correctly, manage a part of the lesson by checking for hand signals or kids obeying a certain traffic sign, or helping one student learn to ride while I teach the rest of the class.
What is the schedule?
The 4th and 5th Grade Schedule is not consistent and hard to paste and cut.
3rd Grade P.E. – Mondays and Tuesdays
Ms. Kleinhanz, 12:20-1 p.m. Ms. Adams, 1:05-1:45 p.m.
May I use my own bike?
No. Due to equity and liability policies in the agreement between Seattle Public Schools and Cascade Bicycle Club, students may not use their own bikes.
A set of 30 bikes and helmets will be at our school for this three-week unit, 5 or 6 P.E. lessons.
May I wear my own helmet?
With caregiver permission, students may choose to bring their own bike helmet to school. It must be approved for bicycles, so check for a sticker inside that says something like “Complies with CPSC Safety Standard for Bicycles”. Some skateboard helmets are not approved for biking. Students wearing school district helmets will also be provided a protective hair liner to wear with it.
What should I wear?
Please wear safe biking clothes and shoes (NO flip flops, NO dresses). Be aware that wide pants can get caught in the chain. Also, please be prepared for the weather. Some of the bike lessons we be outdoors.
What if I don’t know how to ride a bike yet?
I have taught many kids how to ride a bike in my 25 years as a P.E. teacher. I am especially good with kids who are anxious, who are afraid of falling, or struggle to learn at home. We can meet on a weekend or after school to learn. Some kids may have told you they don’t want to learn how to ride a bike, but perhaps preparing for this bike unit will motivate them. Teaching kids to ride a bike is an absolute passion of mine and I love it! Please reach out if you’d like some help learning to ride!
Questions, comments, or concerns please contact Jeannie Bastasch, P.E. Teacher
Math Fair is coming! March 23–27
Math Fair is a non-competitive week-long display of student creativity, passion, and talent in the field of mathematics. Students are encouraged to design, create, solve, calculate, write, build, or record, any type of project that shows their love for mathematics. Participation is open to all Decatur students and is optional.
Projects are due on Friday, March 20th, however late projects will be accepted and displayed during the week of Math Fair. Projects may also be turned in as early as March 16th. Projects should be dropped off in the Decatur Lobby with a Math Fair Participant Form attached to it. Students and teachers will be able to view projects throughout the week of Math Fair. Families are encouraged to come and view projects on Math Night – March 26, 6:15-7:30 p.m. Each participant will receive a comment booklet along with a small prize for participating. If you have questions about Math Fair, please contact Cheryl Adams at: cnadams@seattleschools.org
Need an idea? A Math Fair flyer was sent home with every student, and there are extras in the office. There are many ideas on the back of the flyer to help you get started. The participant form is also on the flyer.

Thinking of Volunteering?
With so many exciting field trips coming up this year, there will be many new opportunities to volunteer. If you are considering becoming a new or renewing volunteer in 2026, the screening process can take up to 6 weeks. Please plan ahead and reach out to the Decatur staff member for whom you'd like to volunteer. This will ensure that you are sponsored and can begin or renew your volunteer status in time!
Please contact our Volunteer Liaison Ms. Jessica at jksmarttsilv@seattleschools.org if you have questions or need more information.
Looking for something? We probably have it.
If any of these items look familiar, please reclaim them at our lost & found. Reunite with your smaller items in the office.
