Monthly Update
Dear Lamoille South Community,
As we head into winter break, we take a minute to reflect on a successful February. This week alone, we had many celebrations. On Tuesday, I had a chance to join group of students learning how to play African drums with a visiting artist at MES. On Wednesday, all of our principals and admin toured SES as a part of an instructional rounds exercise, visiting various classrooms and strengthening our instructional leadership practices. Yesterday, I watched Mr. Puffer, who runs tech at Stowe High, travel to Peoples Academy and teach a group of French students how to fence. And today, I watched around fifty students at Stowe Middle battle it out in the annual spelling bee. The winning word was "cavalier" and congratulations to Bram Bettencourt! As you can see, there is never a dull moment in our schools.
Please take a minute to review our mid-year data presentations below. We have prioritized literacy this year and the data shows that students are making significant gains across the SU. We presented at each board to provide a mid-year snapshot on our academic achievement goals,
Finally, I want to encourage everyone to please VOTE on the upcoming school budget. All of the presentations and information is available on our website and please reach out with any questions.
Sincerely,
Ryan Heraty

Annual Report
Please don't forget to VOTE and below is our 2024 Annual Report.
Mid-Year Data Presentations
Our schools are focused on academic achievement and over the past two weeks, we have presented to each board. The intent of these presentations is to transparently share our data, discuss the strengths/opportunities, and plan for continuous improvement. We encourage any questions on these presentations. Click on each below.
Governor's Proposal
There is a lot of media attention right now on Governor Scott's Education Transformation Proposal. As I mentioned last month, there are many concerns with this plan and I have been appointed to a policy team through the Vermont Superintendents Association that is meeting with the Agency of Education to discuss this proposal. My general take right now is that there is minimal support for such a drastic governance change but some other significant changes are being proposed. This appears to be a negotiating tactic to reduce the number of districts throughout the state, starting with the most extreme proposal. Learning from experience, we know that governance changes result in minimal cost savings and can create extreme disruptions to student learning. We met with our local senators on Monday and they also appear to be very concerned with the plan and the lack of details.
On Monday, March 3rd, the Commission on the Future of Public Education will be at Peoples Academy. This commission includes the Secretary of Education, one of our senators (Ann Cummings), and many other people who are instrumental in policymaking. I invite everyone to attend that meeting and consider making public comment. It seems that the policies are often influenced by the people that show up and make their voices heard.
