Principal's Message
Dear Hiawatha Community,
This week and continuing next week I began reading Change Sings by Amanda Gorman to classes. What a wonderful message this book gives to support our Walk for Ruby Bridges Day! This book highlights the way each of us can be an activist and bring about positive change! I also highlighted how Amanda Gorman is the youngest presidential inaugural poet in US history!

I wish a safe and Happy Diwali to those who celebrate, and I hope everyone who celebrates Halloween enjoys trick or treating!
Take care,
Katherine

Music Update from Mrs. Safer
We’re having a lot of fun in the music room as we work on singing, beat, rhythm and movement! We used rhythm sticks to keep a steady beat with spooky, scary skeletons, and we imitated some bumps, thumps and clunks with hand drums. We also sang about the ghost of John and learned about Miss White, who saw a ghost eating toast halfway up the lamp post!
Kindergarten and Grade 1 students have continued to enjoy the sights and sounds of autumn in the music room. In October they sang about apples, pumpkins and leaves. They learned a variety of singing games, rhymes, movement and instrument activities to help them build their musical skills and work together.
Grade 2 students did a fabulous job performing “I Think You’re Wonderful” at the Green Mountain Sing this week. They worked hard to learn the song and get ready to sing it for the school. They showed a lot of focus and motivation, and the result was enjoyed by all!
Grade 3 students have conquered some rhythm challenges and made great strides reading, playing and decoding a variety of rhythm patterns. They have also done some pretty impressive instrumental ensemble work, round singing, movement activities and folk dancing!

Wellness & Health Update from Mr. Lester & Mr. B
Hello Hiawatha Families!
In Health and Wellness this week we continued with the Zones of Regulation curriculum.
As we are working toward a positive emotional climate, this week’s lessons focused on All Zones are okay.
Here are some options that the Zones curriculum recommends for adults in a child’s life:
Own your Zone: Model your own feelings and Zones to build a climate of emotional safety and normalize a wide range of emotions. Use statements and questions such as, I’m feeling kind of stressed; I’m in the Yellow Zone; or I’m feeling relaxed and focused. Can anyone guess my Zone?
Provide assurance: As learners experience different feelings and Zones throughout the day, assure them that all their feelings and Zones are okay. Relate to your learners’ feelings by sharing a time you felt that way, or you experienced a similar situation.
It’s okay to be angry in the Red Zone when someone bumps into you, or you drop something. We all get angry sometimes.
It’s okay to be disappointed in the Blue Zone if you didn’t do as well on an assignment as you liked. I remember feeling disappointed when I was in school too.
Have a great weekend!
Mr. B and Mr. Lester
