Mrs. Hendrickson enjoyed her time with Sixth Grade on Thursday. She wanted us to pass this resource along to all of you.
Winter Uniforms
Halloween
As Halloween is approaching, please remind your child to be inclusive. Group costumes can isolate other students. All students should be welcome to participate in a group costume, if they choose.
Last Week's Photos
English Language Arts
Last week, students took the first Wordly Wise vocabulary test of the year. All students were given a copy of Freak the Mighty. They will often be asked to read and complete comprehension questions at home, so we can use class time to analyze the book. Students are getting into the groove of our Sentence of the Week routine to learn grammar concepts. We focused upon independent and dependent clauses with our first mentor sentence.
This week, students will continue reading and analyzing Freak the Mighty. While studying the text, we will explore its narrative point of view, characterize Max and Kevin, understand how conflict drives a story, and discuss its various themes. In Writing, students will study and practice the use of commas, while also reviewing how to write an effective reading response (through the use of the RACE strategy).

Religion
Last week, students completed a Scripture Verse scavenger hunt. Afterwards, I heard one student say, "Woah, that was actually fun!" That brought a huge smile to my face.
This week, students will be introduced to their first Religion project of the year. During Monday’s class, we will discuss the project and brainstorm ideas. At home, you should expect to see your student working on the Religion project for the next few weeks (see due date below). As an FYI, the project is a choice board, meaning that the students have ten options from which to choose. Please remind them that the goal of the project is to shine through it and enjoy doing it! They should pick something that really appeals to them. There will be limited class time to work on the project since several of the options require that students do something out “in the real world.”
On Friday, students will take a test on Chapters 1 & 2 of Christ Our Life. As always, students are invited to make a study tool and turn it in two days before the test. If they make a study tool, they will receive two bonus points on the test. The content in Religion class builds with each chapter, so it is very helpful to make, use, and keep the study tools.
Upcoming Assessments
Christ Our Life Chapters 1 & 2 Test: Friday, October 18th
Unit One Choice Board Project: due Wednesday, November 6th
Math
Honors Math - We began Chapter 2 and looked at exponents and simplified expressions that had exponential terms. We will work with fractions in this chapter, including simplifying fractions (which is why we talked about divisibility and prime factorization) and converting fractions to decimals. They will continue working on their cumulative test. The students complete a handful of problems each day on the material they have learned and will continue to use.
At Level Math - We solved a murder mystery using proportions then solved problems with similar polygons. Next, we will continue to use proportions to solve problems with inaccessible distances and scale models on maps. The students are setting up the proportions, and they are learning to accurately match the corresponding sides. Look in the photos at the above link to see some pictures from the Murder Mystery activity. (You can read the story on Google Classroom.)
Social Studies
Science
I am so proud of the way the sixth grade prepared for and performed on their first science test! Tests will come home in the next test folder so you can see.
Last week, we started Unit 2: The Earth, Moon and Sun. We explored, modeled, read, and discussed the ways that Earth moves through space and how these movements affect us on Earth. Please ask your child about it! I got a few pictures but it was dark and we used flashlights, so not too many this week.
