Fiest Newsletter

A message from Dr. Gerault
Fiest Families,
As we enter the month of November, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for our wonderful Fiest community! Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we work together to make every day a meaningful learning experience for our students.
We are excited about our upcoming Field Days! Our 2nd- and 3rd-grade students will enjoy their Field Day on October 30, followed by 4th and 5th grades on November 2. (PK, Kindergarten, and 1st-grade students will enjoy their Field Day in the spring on April 2, 2027.) These special days provide opportunities for our students to build friendships, demonstrate teamwork, and create lasting memories. We are grateful for the many ways our families support the activities that make Fiest such a special place!
Please join us on Monday, November 9, 2026, for our Veterans Day Recognition Program and Parade as we honor the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve our country. We invite our veterans and families representing active-duty and retired military members to join us for this meaningful celebration. It is a wonderful opportunity for our students to express their gratitude and learn about the sacrifices made by those who protect our freedoms. We look forward to recognizing and celebrating these special heroes in our Fiest community!
Please remember that Tuesday, November 3, is a teacher workday and Election Day, so there will be no school for students. This is an important opportunity to exercise your right to vote and make your voice heard. Every vote matters, and I encourage all eligible family members to take time to participate in this important civic responsibility. Fiest Elementary is a polling site for this election for anyone who lives in Harris County.
As we move through the school year, I also want to emphasize the importance of daily, on-time attendance. Every day at Fiest brings new learning, meaningful connections, and opportunities for students to grow. When you are not here, you miss out! From classroom instruction and hands-on activities to collaboration with classmates, each day matters. Thank you for helping your child make school a priority by arriving on time and being present every day possible.
As Thanksgiving approaches, I hope your family enjoys a restful break filled with gratitude, connection, and joy. I am thankful for our amazing students, dedicated staff, and supportive families who make Fiest Elementary such a wonderful place to learn and grow. Together, we continue to make a difference in the lives of our children!
With gratitude,
Your Proud Principal

Counselors
Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you are able to relax and enjoy the ones you love this month.
Our Bringing Out the Best trait for November and December is Generosity. It is a willingness to give. Look here for how you can support this trait at home. These months easily lend themselves to showing our generosity to others.
For K-5, we will be presenting our W.H.O. (We Help Ourselves) lesson this month. There is a separate permission form for this lesson that allows you to either say yes or no for your child to listen and participate in this particular lesson. It is very important that you do check one of the options when you receive this permission slip and to turn it in promptly. They will be coming home on Nov. 4th.
For PK, our lesson is titled “What is a Problem?” In 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grades we will have a lesson on managing emotions in Nov. and/or Dec.
For grades 1-5, if you would like to have your child tested for the Horizons Gifted and Talented program, please go into your HAC and give your permission. See here for directions. This must be done by Nov. 30th.
We hope you have a great month!

Vision and hearing referrals were sent home with students during the last week in October. Please have your child’s health care provider complete the bottom section of the referral form when your child has their vision or hearing exam. Return the completed referral form to the school.
Screening information is submitted to the State of Texas annually and includes pass, fail, and outcome for all screenings.
Your child’s successful learning is dependent on their ability to read and hear what is being taught.
See To Succeed applications were attached to each qualifying Vision referral form sent home. If you would like your child to attend this event at the Berry Center in February for a free exam and glasses (if needed) please complete the 3-page application and return as soon as possible. The deadline for applying is December 7, 2026. However, slots are filled on a first come first serve basis and registration will be closed when all time slots are filled.
If additional assistance is needed, please contact the school nurse.

Attendance matters please help us meet our goal of 95% or higher attendance goal each day.
If your child needs to miss school, please remember to send a handwritten note stating child’s name, date of absence, reason of absence, and parent signature. If you have a doctor’s excuse, please attach it to the note.
CHANGES IN TRANSPORTATION
As always, our top priority is the safety of our students and staff. Please help us keep your children safe by adhering to our end-of-day procedures. These procedures are designed get your children home each day safely and efficiently. One primary means of transportation should be chosen for the year. Changes of transportation should be kept to a minimum and must be in writing. Requirements are established to help guarantee the safety of every student. A change in transportation must be arranged and submitted in writing by 3:00PM to allow adequate time for our staff to provide temporary stickers and to communicate the change to the appropriate persons. All communication should be directed to the front office. Emails and phone calls to make a transportation change are not permitted.

🍂 November Testing News from Ms. Worchesik 🦃
Hello, Fiest Parents! November is a time to give thanks, and we are thankful for your partnership in helping our Fiest Bears grow! No major assessments are taking place this month, but students will continue taking mastery checks in class. These quick checks help teachers see what students have learned and where they may need extra support.
Keep your little turkeys ready to learn with daily attendance, plenty of rest, and encouragement to do their best. Together, we’ll keep harvesting new skills and gobbling up knowledge! 🐻

Happy November Fiest Families!
We have just finished our first round of district assessments, and our teachers are analyzing the data and making a plan moving forward. Please continue to practice math facts at home and check your child's take home folder for things they've been working on in class, so you know what to reinforce at home. Don't forget to ask your child about science and what they've been learning about. Their science study guide is a great resource to utilize at home to reinforce concepts they've been working on in class.

STAAR Spotlight: Decoding the Extended Constructed Response (ECR)
On the Texas STAAR Reading Language Arts test, elementary students complete an Extended Constructed Response (ECR). Unlike short-answer or multiple-choice questions, an ECR asks students to read a passage and write a multi-paragraph essay. To earn full points, students must state a clear main idea or opinion (a claim), support it using specific details directly from the text (text evidence), and explain how that evidence proves their point.
3 Simple Ways to Help Your Child at Home:
- Ask for "Proof" When Reading Together
After your child reads a story or article, ask a question like, "Why do you think the main character was feeling brave?" When they answer, follow up with: "Show me the sentence in the book that proves that!" Finding direct proof builds the exact text-evidence skill needed for STAAR.
2. Practice the "Talk Before You Write" Strategy
Organizing thoughts on paper can be tricky for young writers. Have your child state their answer and two supporting details aloud before typing or writing them down. Verbalizing ideas first makes structuring a full essay much easier.
3. Use Simple Linking Phrases
Encourage your child to use transition phrases when discussing stories or schoolwork, such as "According to the text...", "For example...", or "This shows that..." Connecting evidence to their own thoughts is key to earning top writing marks.

Lightspeed Parent Portal
Learning doesn’t stop when the school day ends, and neither does technology use! CFISD is excited to introduce the Lightspeed Parent Portal, giving families greater visibility and control over their student’s digital experience after school.
On October 12, Technology Services sent parents and guardians an email directly from Lightspeed inviting them to create an optional Parent Portal account. Once registered, their accounts will connect them to their student(s).
Through the Parent Portal, families will be able to:
