Our Learning Community...
A giant thank you to our amazing PTA for hosting such an incredible Fall Festival! So much time, effort, and planning went into executing this event, and we are truly grateful. From setting up decorations to organizing activities, gathering donations and cleaning up, your dedication made the evening a huge success. It was wonderful to see so many families connecting, laughing, and enjoying time together. Watching students play games, parents chat, and our community come alive with joy makes all the hard work worthwhile. The smiles, laughter, and sense of togetherness remind us why these moments matter so much! This event simply would not happen without our volunteers, donors, and the families who give their time so generously. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
As we move through the week of Halloween excitement, please remember that candy should not be coming to school as a snack or part of lunch. While treats are fun, too much sugar can make it difficult for children to focus, regulate their energy, and stay engaged in learning. Studies show that high sugar intake can lead to energy crashes, decreased attention, and difficulty managing emotions, all of which significantly impact the classroom environment. Let's remember our focus on Health & Wellness last week and built on it as we work together to keep our students fueled with healthy foods that support their growth and learning.
This week families are invited to watch our Costume Parade on Thursday, October 31st! The parade will begin just a few minutes after the second bell, so be sure to arrive on time so you don't miss it. If your child is participating, please make sure their costume is school-appropriate. Masks may not be permitted as they must ensure eyes are not covered and completely visible, and any toy weapons will be confiscated. Please help your child plan ahead so they can fully enjoy the morning without any disappointment.
Share Your Love of Jones!
Did you have fun at the Fall Festival? Has your child grow academically, socially, and as a leader? Has Jones helped foster a love of the arts? Has a Jones educator made a meaningful impact on your child or family? Have you built friendships and community through the families you’ve met at Jones?
We know you have choices when it comes to your child’s education and we are so grateful you have chosen Jones Elementary! Whether Jones is your neighborhood school or one you chose through the district's Choice Program, your story matters.
As prospective families explore schools on GreatSchools.org, we want them to hear directly from the people who know Jones best... you! Please take a few minutes to share what makes our school special and why you are proud to be part of the Jones community.
Counseling Corner...
As you may have read in last week's letter, our school counseling allocation has shifted. While I am sad I will no longer be here every day, I am so thankful and happy to share that I will still be on campus Tuesday through Friday to support our students! Please know that my commitment to their social-emotional and academic well-being remains my top priority four days a week.
In recognition of Bullying Prevention Month and in alignment with Jones as a designated No Place For Hate School, our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons this month focused on students learning the clear definition of bullying: when someone repeatedly hurts someone else, and the person being hurt is unable to make it stop. Students learned that bullying is one-sided, unfair, and involves a power imbalance. Most importantly, our SEL lessons empowered students to be upstanders by teaching them to speak out against bullying and immediately tell the closest adult when bullying happens. Our students are learning that all of their voices matter, and they are empowered to use positive power to help one another rather than negative power to hurt.
In continuing our collaboration between school and home, please reinforce the idea of using positive power when your child is making choices. This simple phrase lets your child know they have the power to make choices that help, rather than hurt, others!
Part of being a No Place For Hate school means celebrating our wonderful diversity, traditions, and different cultures! I am so thrilled to share that Jones will be honoring Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with a meaningful, educational, and culturally enriching experience for our students. We are creating a school Ofrenda in the counseling center which is a traditional altar created during Día de los Muertos, a Mexican holiday that honors and celebrates loved ones who have passed away. Rather than being a somber ritual, the ofrenda is a joyful celebration of life, memory, and connection across generations.
We encourage students and staff to bring in copy photos or drawings of their passed loved ones, pets, or their favorite people between October 27th and October 30th. I will collect these, and the Ofrenda will be set up for viewing all the first week of November! We are looking forward to this deeply meaningful celebration of ancestry and remembrance while promoting respectful understanding of cultural traditions.
I look forward to continuing to partner with you to support our amazing students!
With so much gratitude, Mrs. Rebelo-Vu :)
Highlights From Last Week...
Ms. Carson, Mrs. Higdon, and Ms. Ruiz's classroom had a Family Read In on Friday morning.
When families read together in a relaxed, fun setting, children see that reading is not just something done for school it is something to enjoy. It helps students associate books with warmth, laughter, and connection.
In addition to our School Wide Family Workshops, classrooms are creating family experiences like this read in. All classrooms will be creating three Family Events this year, so be on the lookout for more information coming from your child's teacher.

Día de los Muertos
Did you know that just 15 minutes of reading each day can make a world of difference in your child’s learning journey? Whether you are reading to your child, reading together, or listening to them read aloud, it all counts and it all matters!
Reading at home builds more than just literacy skills. It strengthens vocabulary, improves comprehension, and develops a lifelong love of learning. In fact, children who are read to daily are exposed to 1.4 million more words by the time they start school than children who are not. That kind of language exposure lays a strong foundation for both academic success and confident communication.
Just as importantly, books also help children grow socially by allowing them to step into other people’s experiences, see the world from different perspectives and practice empathy and kindness. Stories have the power to spark cultural awareness, build understanding and nurture the skills that help our students become not only successful learners, but also compassionate human beings.
Here are a few ways to make reading a special part of your routine:
-
Choose a cozy time and space to read together
-
Let your child pick the book (even if it’s the same one again!)
-
Ask questions about the story to boost comprehension
-
Model a love for reading by enjoying your own book nearby
The best part, your family has access to an endless amount of books through the internet and the Public Library. Looking for something new to read? Check out the links below for inspiration...
