Welcome
A Note from Ms. Margaritis Gettleman
"We must find the time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives.” —John F. Kennedy
Hope and Ascend Academy wish our entire community a very Happy Thanksgiving. We are grateful for each and every one of you.
Teacher of the Year
Congratulations Ms. Brown!
Physical Quizzes
Ms. Lugo's classes "rocked out" during a recent quiz on cancer. Ms. Lugo had students moving around to demonstrate their knowledge. We love seeing active learning in our classrooms!
The Creative Side
The ART classes at Hope are off to a great start. Each student has created a self portrait for the end of year exhibition, including our middle school student. Currently Studio Art is learning figure drawing, Photography is beginning “Horror Week” with a series of photographs that expose(pun intended) the students to a variety of filters and lighting tricks. Graphic Design is designing action figure compositions using visual rhythm, movement and repetition. We look forward to showing a sample of each unit in the spring exhibition.
Bio Blitz
Ms. Lugo's classes conducted a Bio Blitz here on the Hope Academy grounds earlier this month. Students observed and denoted biotic and abiotic factors as well as local biodiversity for this sample site representing Passaic's urban ecosystem.. Our students are definitely taking notice of the world around them!
Hispanic Heritage Celebration
Hope Academy belated celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month and kicked off Puerto Rican Heritage month with a Food Extravaganza. Students and staff brought in their favorite dishes to share with the school. We are still full from all the delicious food we ate.
PE and Health
Ascend Students Focus on Health
In PE and Health at ASCEND, we are exploring the various components of physical fitness and their relationship to nutrition. Such as cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition and how they impact overall health. In addition to health components, the students are diving deeper into dieting trends and the use of supplements for weight loss; exploring the pros and cons of these approaches within a limited timeframe. Next up: CPR - a LIFE SAVING SKILL
Guest Speaker
Many thanks to our partner, The Bridges Project for bringing in Councilwoman Alejandrina Banch of Garfield to speak with Hope today. Ms. Banch serves students of Passaic County with her role at the Boys and Girls Club. We appreciate the time she took today to visit Hope.
Social Studies
Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
Social Studies students have been exploring the Roaring 20s, then the Great Depression and finally moved on to New Deal. After all work is completed at the end of each chapter our Ascend students complete a writing assessment that incorporates the main themes they learned. This week we are moving on the the Road to World War II.
Hope Nutrition Classes Begin
This month we started a twelve week class on nutrition facilitated by Rutgers Cooperative Learning. Our students will immerse themselves in learning about proper nutrition and trying healthy foods. We are getting ready to make good choices at school. Thank you Nurse Fatima for arranging this great program.
