Congratulations, Mustang Marching Band!
What an incredible season! After months of dedication, heart, and hard work, our Mustangs took the field at Ford Field on Saturday, November 1, competing among the very best in the state and earning 10th Place at the State Championship!
From early mornings to late-night rehearsals, you’ve shown what it means to perform with passion, teamwork, and Mustang pride. The memories made this season will last long after the final note fades.

FAFSA Night, Thursday November 13
In preparation, please take a moment to create your FSA ID ahead of time. The FSA ID acts as your electronic signature for completing the FAFSA and is required for both you and your student.
You can create your FSA ID by visiting: studentaid.gov — Create FSA ID
Completing this step beforehand will help the evening run smoothly and allow us to focus on walking through the FAFSA together. If you need assistance with the process, feel free to reach out — we’re here to help!
Join us for a very informative meeting about completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Completing the FAFSA is a required part of your child’s senior year. If you need a waiver, they are available in the Guidance Office.
Don’t miss this important opportunity to learn how to maximize your student’s financial aid options!
FAFSA
The U.S. Department of Education announced that the 2026-27 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is officially open!
As always, we appreciate your efforts to encourage as many students as possible to submit the FAFSA form. Remember, we are here to support you along with way. There are a number of resources available on our Web site including the FAFSA Awareness Toolkit.
Last year, FAFSA completion across the state was over 55% and we know that we can increase that number with your help to ensure that Michiganders maximize their aid eligibility. Let’s make this happen together!
Genesee Opportunity Stipened
We are excited to announce that the Class of 2026 Genesee Opportunity Stipend application is officially OPEN for seniors AND 5th year students to apply!
The Genesee Opportunity (GO) stipend provides Genesee County high school graduates with money for college, career training, or certification licensing fees. To be eligible, a student must reside in Genesee County, Michigan or on a property that is taxed by a Genesee County school district and be a graduate, from a high school in Genesee County – students may apply and find more information at https://geneseego.org/.
If you are interested in scheduling a GO Day presentation(s) for your school, please reach out to me via email at hjohnson@geneseeisd.org or phone at 810-591-6176.
Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have. I look forward to working with you and your students!

Traver Talk
We’ve all heard the saying, “Practice makes perfect,” but I’ve come to believe the better version is, “Perfect practice makes perfect.” Growth happens when effort is focused, consistent, and intentional, and that’s exactly what we’re focusing on this month.
Our teachers regularly assess student understanding through quizzes and tests, but those bigger moments are built on smaller, everyday steps including classwork, practice assignments, and preparation. When those pieces are missing, it becomes harder for students to feel confident in what they’re learning.
That’s why, during November, we’re putting extra focus on missing assignments. Each advisory class will track assignments due this month, and the class with the lowest average number of missing assignments per student will earn a reward!
Take a look at the chart below to see our starting point. In October, the average student had just over six missing assignments, for a building total of 4,419. These numbers include only assignments with October due dates. Our goal is to see that total drop as we move deeper into the second marking period (we’re already two weeks in!).
With a little extra effort, and the right kind of practice, our students can turn progress into achievement. After all, perfect practice makes perfect!

CHS Parents and Students:
As we head into the Holiday Season, please note the following activities and reminders. Time always seems to fly by during this stretch of the 1st Semester and I hope this checklist helps you with your planning efforts.
November
1. College Application Deadlines: If your student is a senior, ensure that all college application
materials are submitted by the respective deadlines. Check with the Mr. O’Henley in the Zone office for support.
2. Parent/Student Vue: Review your student's midterm progress in their classes and discuss them with your student. Identify areas of improvement or concerns. I encourage you to email or call any staff member if you need more feedback.
3. Extracurricular Activities and Clubs: Encourage your student to actively participate in extracurricular activities, clubs, or sports. These activities can enhance their college applications and provide valuable experiences. Please see the various after-school clubs that you might be interested in. Winter sports practices are beginning and there is still time to join.
4. Volunteer Hours: Seniors, please explore volunteer opportunities for you within the community or school. Please see Mrs. Clark in the Zone Office to discuss possible opportunities. Many colleges and scholarship programs value community service and 5 hours each semester is required for seniors.
5. College/Career Day: All students, grades 9-12, attended our annual College and Career Day on Wednesday, October 29th. Please take some time to talk with your student about the experience, their interests, and something that they really enjoyed about their visit. Thank you to Dawn Fagerstrom for organizing such a wonderful event for our students!
Looking Ahead: (Please keep the following on “your radar”)
December
1. Final Exam Preparation: Support your student in preparing for final exams. Encourage your
student to actively participate in all exam preparation activities in their classes. It’s always good
practice to create a study schedule, well in advance, of the scheduled exams. As a reminder, tutoring takes place on M-Th, from 2:20-4:20 pm with Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Fowler in the High School Media Center. All students who live in-district are provided transportation home after normal tutoring sessions, if needed.
2. Holiday Break Plans: Discuss holiday break plans with your student. If they need to catch up on coursework or prepare for exams, plan accordingly. ParentVue can assist you in identifying
missing assignments for your student to complete. Contact teachers to get any clarification that
you may need to stay informed.
3. School Events: During this period, the building will be hosting a number of school events,
performances, or holiday concerts. Please check our school website for dates and times for all upcoming activities and events.
4. Communication with Teachers: Stay in regular communication with your student's teachers. If there are concerns or questions, reach out to them before the holiday break.
5. Review Graduation Requirements: If your student is a senior, review graduation requirements and ensure that they are on track to meet them. Double-check any outstanding credits or requirements. Please contact our Counseling Office to inquire about your student’s academic standing, and discuss options to address any concerns.
6. Discuss Future Plans: Have conversations with your student about their future plans, whether it's college, vocational training, or entering the workforce. Having regular discussions about the future allows students time to plan and can also alleviate anxiety. This checklist is a resource for you to stay ahead of deadlines and avoid any “surprises”. Regular communication with teachers, counselors, and your student(s) are keys to a successful high school experience.
Please contact me if you have questions or concerns. Together, we can smooth the path to success for your student.
