Fidgets and Toys
Please encourage your second grader to refrain from bringing any toys or fidgets to school with them unless they have a documented need for them. They quickly become a distraction and can easily get broken, lost or stolen so it is best to keep these items safe at home. Thank you for partnering with us to minimize distractions at school.

Take Home Practice
Blending Lines
You may have noticed blending lines in your child's green take home folder. These blending lines illustrate the skill we are working on in phonics this week. The blending lines are a great way for students to practice decoding words. Blending lines are a strategic and systematic way for students to attend to and practice a newly introduced phonics skill before they begin reading a decodable passage or story with the same skill. Students practice applying the newly learned pattern in isolation and then in text.
Students will likely highlight the sound for the week already on their page. In the example above, they could've highlighted the silent e at the end of the word. For this week's blending line we will be working on VCE words. Highlighting the e reminds students that the vowel will say its name.
When students are ready, they will segment the sounds in the word. For example, the first word, name has the following sounds /n/ /A/ /m/ and then blend the sounds together to say the word name. This continues until the entire line has been read. As students become more familiar, they can read the words for fluency practice.
