The Wednesday Weekly
Back to School - 9/4/24
Message from Ms. Joanna
Dear PS 107 Families,
We are so excited to welcome your children back to school tomorrow morning at 8:20 am! As a reminder, drop-off locations are as follows:
PreK: In the “Little Yard,” the second gate on 13th Street as you walk towards Prospect Park West. Parents will be able to accompany their children to the classroom on the first three days of school, 9/5, 9/6, 9/9. After that, Ms Cruz and Ms Tamanna will greet your children daily in the Little Yard and bring them up to the classroom.
Kindergarten: In the Sunshine Garden, the first gate on 13th Street as you walk towards Prospect Park West. Parents will be able to accompany their children to the classroom on the first three days of school, 9/5, 9/6, 9/9. After that, teachers will meet their students in the Garden on 9/10 and 9/11. On 9/12, Kindergarteners will start walking up to their classrooms on their own, with the assistance of PS 107 staff members.
1st Grade: At the main entrance to PS 107, on 8th Avenue between 13th and 14th streets. Teachers will meet their students in front of the school building on 9/5, 9/6, and 9/9. On 9/10, students will start walking into the building on their own.
2nd-5th grades: In the Big Yard, entering either at the gate on 8th Avenue closer to 14th Street or at the gate on 14th Street between 8th Avenue and Prospect Park West. Teachers will meet students in the Big Yard on 9/5 and 9/6. Starting on Monday, 9/9, 2nd-5th graders will walk to their classrooms on their own.
On these first days of school in particular, please make sure to leave younger siblings (where possible), dogs, and other family members (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc) at home because it will be very crowded by PS 107 and very difficult to navigate. We ask for your patience during this time as we will be getting 540+ students into the building. After the first few days, drop off will go much more smoothly.
BREAKFAST AT PS 107
As a reminder, PS 107 will no longer be offering bagged breakfast in the classroom. If your child needs to eat breakfast at school, you may drop them off at the front entrance with Agent Sharon at 8 am, Monday through Friday, beginning on Monday, September 9th. Children will be served a hot breakfast and supervised in our Cafeteria.(Please see the PreK-8 Breakfast Menu here.) At 8:20 am, children will be dismissed from the Cafeteria to their classrooms. If your child arrives at school after 8:20 am and needs breakfast, we will have a limited supply of bagged breakfasts that they will eat in the classroom. While we know that it is sometimes difficult, we ask that you make every effort to get your child to school on time, by 8:20 am, as the morning transitional time is necessary to help children to get settled in their classrooms and ready to learn.
LUNCH AT PS 107
Lunch is also served daily at PS 107 and is free for all students. Please note that there can occasionally be last-minute changes to the School Food menus because of supply chain issues. Please prepare your child for this possibility. You can find the PreK-8 Lunch Menu here.
SAFER ACCESS VIDEO INTERCOM SYSTEM
PS 107 now has “Safer Access” – a video intercom system that allows us to keep our doors locked during the school day! Our Safer Access system will be turned on daily right after morning drop-off. If you are picking up your child early, you will need to press the buzzer at the main entrance. If Agent Sharon recognizes you as a PS 107 parent, you will be buzzed in. You will then sign in at the security desk as usual and you’ll be directed to the Main Office. If Agent Sharon does not recognize you, she will ask you to show your identification and may ask some additional questions about your visit to the school. Please be patient with Agent Sharon as she works to remember more than a thousand faces so that our school community can be as safe as possible. Whenever you visit the PS 107 building, please have identification with you, as you cannot be admitted to the building without it, whether Agent Sharon knows you or not. This is a rule that we must adhere to for everyone’s safety.
NEW WEBSITE
When you have a moment, please take a look at our newly-redesigned PS 107 website! This is thanks to the incredibly skilled work of parent Jocelyn Fung (with invaluable input from parent Ira Resnick, along with the PTA leadership), We are thrilled to have this new site that so clearly communicates to the larger community what PS 107 is all about. Thank you, Jocelyn, for your amazing work!
BEAUTIFYING OUR BUILDING
You will also notice the beautiful mural that greets students and families as they enter the building – along with a welcoming message in our main office. Parent Kate Wilkes Polevoy spent countless hours this summer turning our main entrance and first floor into a wonderland, featuring the remarkable diversity of planet Earth. The more you look at it, the more details you will see! We are incredibly grateful to Kate for continuing to beautify our school with her incredible artistry.
WELCOME NEW SCHOOLWIDE STAFF!
We are thrilled to welcome to PS 107 two new Physical Education teachers! Ali Annunziato will be our full-time PE teacher, working with grades PreK through 5th, Monday through Friday.
Ali comes to PS 107 after teaching Physical Education in the South Bronx and East Flatbush for the past fifteen years. Ali was a Big Apple Awards nominee in 2013 and 2014, and is the recipient of the 2013 Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture Favorite Teacher Award. Ali played collegiate ice hockey and helped lead the Minnesota Blue J’s to a national championship in 2007. Welcome to PS 107, Ali!
Joining Ali will be Mark Sacoto, who will be with us on Tuesdays and Thursdays, also working with all grades. Mark is a recent graduate of the Brooklyn College School of Education, with a major in Physical Education. Mark was a member of the Dean’s List and an NYC Men Teach fellow. Mark also speaks Spanish fluently. We’re so excited to have Mark as part of our PE team!
CURRICULUM NIGHT – SAVE THE DATE!
Please save the date for Curriculum Night, where you’ll learn more about your child’s classroom, as well as our speciality classes. Curriculum Night will be Wednesday, September 25th, 4:30-7:30 pm, in-person at PS 107. We will send additional information in the coming weeks about Curriculum Night.
COMMUNICATIONS WITH SCHOOL STAFF
As a reminder, because of NYC Public Schools (NYCPS) data privacy regulations, our staff will only be communicating via our @schools.nyc.gov email addresses this year. All teachers have provided these email addresses to you. Important school and district contacts are listed on the first page in our Parent Handbook.
Unfortunately, Konstella is not an NYC Public Schools-approved platform for school communication purposes (but is fine for PTA-related communications), so the school will be sending all schoolwide communication via Operoo this year. Messages come from “Operoo Administrator” (we wish this weren’t the case!), so please be sure that your spam filters do not send emails from Operoo to your junk folder. Teachers also cannot communicate through the Konstella platform.
Finally, if you have questions about school operations, policies, or procedures, be sure to check our Parent Handbook first. If you don’t see the answer there, feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher if it is classroom-specific or Nadia Benlarbi, Parent Coordinator, if you have more of a school-wide question, at nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov. Please give our teachers 24-48 hours on work days to respond to emails. Teachers have very limited time to write and respond to emails during the school day, and, at 107, we strongly encourage all of our staff to have work-life balance so that they can be present, positive, and engaged with their students during the day.
We are looking forward to a wonderful 2024-25 school year!
Warmly,
Ms Joanna

SCHOOL INFORMATION
SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR 2024-2025
At this time, you should have received the welcome letter from your class teacher. That letter will include either a list of school supplies to purchase or details about how to submit a payment for your child’s school supplies. If you need financial assistance with school supplies, please do not hesitate to reach out to Parent Coordinator Nadia Benlarbi at nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov.
SCHOOL HOURS FOR 2024-2025
The first day of school is Thursday, September 5th. This is a full day of school for all grades. The school day will run from 8:20 am to 2:35 pm. Student arrival and dismissal locations will be sent to you along with class assignments the last week of August. For the complete 2024-2025 school year calendar, please click here.
EARLY BIRD FOR 2024-2025
Over the summer, we held a lottery for our Early Bird Program. We are now at capacity and cannot accommodate additional students and maintain the safety needed for supervision. If you are interested in participating in the program, please email Nadia Benlarbi at nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov to add your name to our Early Bird Waitlist and we will notify you of any openings.
SCHOOL BREAKFAST FOR 2024-2025
PS 107 will no longer be offering bagged breakfast for students to eat in their classrooms daily. We will continue to offer free breakfast, but in order to take advantage of it, students must come to school between 8 and 8:10 am for breakfast. They will be supervised in the cafeteria by PS 107 staff members. There is no sign up required to have school breakfast. Students just need to come through the main entrance with a caregiver and let Agent Sharon know they are there for breakfast. Students will be dismissed to their classrooms at 8:20 am. Students will not be admitted for breakfast in the cafeteria after 8:10 am daily. Note that children will not be denied breakfast if they arrive late! Any child who arrives after 8:20 am (the start of the school day) and needs breakfast can pick up a bagged "breakfast after the bell."
SCHOOL LUNCH FOR 2024-2025
School lunch will continue to be offered to all students for free daily. Most likely, PS 107 will use the PreK-8 Express Hot Lunch menu. The best way to keep track of what is being served is on the NYCPS website, the link to view menus can be found on this page. Note that food substitutions may occur based on supply chain issues, and we do not recommend relying on school food if your child is not a flexible eater. 😀
2024-2025 ANNUAL FORMS
The following forms are currently available for completion via Operoo:
Emergency Blue Card
Daily Dismissal form
Media Consent form (for new-to-NYC Public Schools students only)
Prospect Park and Neighborhood Walking Trip permission slip
Park Slope Armory YMCA consent form
Please be sure to complete these forms as soon as possible so that we can have this information available for staff at the beginning of the school year.
AFTERSCHOOL FOR 2024-2025
PS 107 offers a wonderful in-house afterschool program run by the Park Slope Afterschool Center Corporation, an independent, non-profit organization. Afterschool classes take place every day from 2:35 to 5:55 pm. PSACC held a virtual Open House on Thursday August 8th, where they provided information about how the program operates and their many offerings. Check their website for a recording of this session. If you have immediate questions about afterschool, please reach out to Pamela Rosenberg, PSACC Director at director@psafterschool.org.
JOIN KONSTELLA!
A great deal of schoolwide parent communication at PS 107 is sent out via the Konstella platform. If you are not already signed up for Konstella, please follow the directions here.
When you have your child’s classroom assignment, you will follow the instructions to add yourself to the classroom here in our Konstella Cheat Sheet.
If you have difficulty or have any questions, please reach out to the Communications Team at communications@ps107.org or Nadia Benlarbi, PS 107’s Parent Coordinator at nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov.
NYCPS INFORMATION
FAMILY INCOME FORMS
All families should complete the Family Income Inquiry Form, which helps schools receive money for their programs ,whether or not they qualify for free or reduced lunch.
NYC SCHOOLS ACCOUNT - NYCSA
This is a NYC DOE parent account for students grades K - 12 that enables parents/guardians to view all of their children’s records - grades, fitnessgrams, attendance, your child’s DOE email, etc. At least one parent/guardian will need to have access to this account. We strongly encourage all parents/guardians to have their own account. Any parent with children in grades 1-5 who does not have their own NYSCA , please contact nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov for instructions and your unique account creation code.
PLEASE NOTE: Incoming PreK ,Kindergarten, and new to NYC Public School families will need to wait until the 2nd week of school when their child’s Student ID (aka OSIS number) will be generated. Once your child has been given their ID number, I will share directions along with unique account creation codes with you to set up your child’s NYSCA. They will come home in your child's backpack within the next 2 weeks.
HELPFUL TIPS
MAKING SCHOOL DAY DISMISSAL PICK-UP CHANGES
If there is a change to your child’s dismissal, please be sure to note the change on the Daily Dismissal form in Operoo. If it is a same day change, please email your child’s teacher and cc Nadia at nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov in addition to any changes on the Daily Dismissal form. You can also contact the main office at 718-499-2054.
LOWER GRADES
Please be sure to send your children to school with a full change of clothes. Accidents can happen easily when they are younger as they often get distracted and don’t check in with their bodies. Please be sure to return your child with a new set the next day if they need to be replaced.
LABEL!
Please parents, remember to label your student’s water bottles, lunch boxes, backpacks, and clothing with their full name (last names are essential!) and if there is space, please include their class number. We want to be able to return all fabulous items to their rightful owner!
IDENTIFICATION
When entering the school building you must present your ID to the safety agent when signing in.
One helpful tip is to take a picture of your id. Often, we will have our phone with us even if we don’t have our id. This way, you always have it handy :)
