If you have below a 3.0 in any courses, you will be scheduled for Solon Blocks for classes below a 3, you may be scheduled to meet with me, a work lab may be added to your schedule, and/or you may lose the option to sign in and out during unscheduled times. If you have a grade below a 3, the best thing you can do is proactively come chat with me about your plan for improving it!- Emily T and Jason G.

Hello MHS Community,

I hope you had a wonderful weekend and all is good. Today, the MHS faculty, in a collaborative effort with our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion consultants, continued our learning to improve our understanding of supporting BIPOC students. This marked our final session together, where we delved into a variety of topics, all of which were derived from MHS student interviews conducted last May. We are committed to continuing this partnership with our consultant team next year, engaging in faculty meetings and early release days, to learn, adapt our practices, and enhance equity for our learners.

We also worked on revising our Learning Expectations for students and will share the final revised version over the summer once we have finished the review. Part of the process has been working with the Agency of Education and Great Schools Partnership to better understand equity—and proficiency-based grading practices.

As MHS enters the 5th to last week, we encourage you to actively check in with your student, review their power school grades. Your involvement is crucial as we all work towards ending the year on a positive learning scale.

Please let us know if you have any questions, and have a wonderful new week.

Sincerely,

Jason

Race Against Racism

The 6th Annual Race Against Racism will take place on Saturday, May 25th, 2024 at the State House in Montpelier!

The Race Against Racism is a state-wide annual anti-racist event, organized by youth from several Vermont high schools and held on the State House lawn. The registration for the race will begin at 11:30AM and will continue to the start of the rally at noon. All are welcome to a public rally, curated with a spectacular list of notable speakers, performances, and live music from youth and professionals such as Rajnii Eddins, Shidaa Projects and A2VT. The goal of the event is to strengthen and amplify the crucial conversation surrounding racial justice in Vermont, and to emphasize the idea that change is now. At 1:30PM, an optional 5k run or walk will begin at the State House on a scenic loop through the city of Montpelier. As the race winds down, attendees are invited to participate in racial justice workshops from 2-2:30PM prior to closing ceremonies at 2:30. Many local social justice organizations will be promoting their work and engaging the public in political activities. This is a family friends event with activities for children too!

Host Families Volunteers Needed

Good evening!

I am reaching out to leaders in our community in hopes of finding volunteer host families for three wonderful high school exchange students coming to Vermont in August. Perhaps you or someone you know would be interested in the opportunity to be a volunteer host family for the 24-25 high school year.

Our students will attend the high school closest to their host family and can take school transportation or carpool. They speak good English and have their own medical insurance as well as their own spending money to cover their personal expenses. Volunteer host families come in all shapes and sizes; retired, single parents, couples with or without children of any age, etc.

Here are notes from three of our students that have requested to come to our beautiful state:

(EST24511) Helena - Spain - Female – 10th Grade - She writes, “Hi, I´m an active girl that always is looking for new challenges and being part of the community. I enjoy playing sports (field hockey, tennis, and swimming), reading books, drawing, going out and chatting with my friends. When I finish high school, I want to go to the University to become a teacher, a dentist, or a lawyer. Thanks in advance to share your live, your culture, your home with me.”

(EST24533TSU) Genoveve – Spain - Female – 10th Grade - She writes, “I really love Girl Scouts, reading, hiking, cycling, cinema, and music. I am supportive, responsible, and I love to socialize and make friends. I am quick to sign up for volunteer activities whenever I can. I'd like to play basketball and do modern dance. Thank you very much for your generosity and hospitality!”

(OEG24520) Pound - Thailand - Male – 11th grade - He writes, “I am a very funny, kind, and very well-socialized guy. I make most people and my friends have fun and laugh. I can fit in with everyone. I want to study IT technology and coding programs, and business administration. I very much like pets. My house has two parrots named Pipo and Jubjib. I am excited to practice my language skills and cooking skills with my host family and my new friends."

I would appreciate any assistance you might be able to provide. If we can find a family to host one of these students because of your help, my organization will gladly donate $200 to your classroom, your school, or a school club of your choice.

Please feel free to share my contact information with anyone interested. They can also visit www.ciee.org/host for more information.

Are you aware of anyone who may be interested in hosting one of these students in their home?

With gratitude,

--
