Be A Guardian - Be Gracious
- Time moves faster than you think. One day you’re full of plans, the next you’re full of memories — so live the plans while you can.
- Joy hides in ordinary places. A warm cup, a familiar song, an unexpected laugh — don’t overlook the small miracles.
- Say “thank you” more often. Gratitude stretches a short life into a rich one.
- Your peace is worth more than people’s approval. Don’t trade your inner harmony just to fit into someone else’s expectations.
- Be gentle with yourself. Life is difficult enough without you becoming your own opponent.
- Your body whispers before it screams. Pay attention early; honoring your body is the first act of self-respect.
- Learn to listen more than you speak. True understanding often lives in the silence after someone finishes talking.
- No one remembers how busy you were — they remember how you made them feel. Presence is the most valuable currency.
Message from Athletic Director, Mike Nolan
Greetings Sports Fan!
The Winter Season is officially underway! As we enter the season, we wanted to remind you of some important details when traveling to contests.

Spectator Conduct: It is of the utmost importance that we conduct with the highest level of Sportsmanship towards visiting schools, athletes, fans, and officials. The PIL is seeking to provide the best experience possible for everyone that attends our Athletic Contests. What makes these events fun and enriches those participating is when all of us do our part regardless of the outcome. Should any concerns arise, please seek out event workers, administration, or security personnel to help resolve any concerns. We appreciate your support in advance when attending Athletic Events.
We are looking to seeing you all at our contests cheering on our student-athletes!!

Mike's Weekly Tid-bits
"What if you didn't put so much pressure on December to make up for whatever you felt the rest of the year was lacking? What if you just let this month feel like a much needed exhale?"
I. A Gentle Reminder
Dear December,
- Guide me to complete this year with grace and gratitude.
- Show me how to finish strong while staying soft.
- Teach me to celebrate how far I've come.
- Remind me that beautiful endings create space for new beginnings.
Source: Jill Wintersteen, Founder of Spirit Daughter
II. Breathe. Simply Breathe.
As the year comes to a close, it can be tempting to try to make December what you had wished the rest of the year had been.
- It can be tempting to try to sneak in a “win” so that you feel like you can call this year a success.
- But I invite you to resist these temptations. I invite you to pause and instead use this last month to rest, reflect without judgement, and remember that you don’t need a particular month to do or achieve anything.
- Despite the way the calendar we adhere to makes it seem, life is not linear.
The countdown to a new year does not mean you’re running out of time. Take a breath, honor the slowdown of the season, and exhale.

III. The Sacred Space Between
The space between no longer and not yet is what defines the pivot periods of our lives.
- This is the time when we have nothing left to hold onto but also nowhere clearly to land.
- This is when most people revert back to their oldest and most familiar coping mechanisms, confusing what’s known for what’s right.
- If we find the courage to hold our hearts open throughout this process, what we find is that we create an opportunity for miracles to find us, to take root in us, to change us through and through.
If we find the resilience to make peace with the unknown, to not require every answer to keep moving forward, to believe that everything will work out one way or another—we begin to live more completely in the moment, releasing the illusions that had been clouding us all along.

V. Question
When did I feel most like myself this year — most aligned, most alive — and how can I intentionally shape my life to cultivate more of those moments?
VI. This Week, I Will
- Allow self-forgiveness to spark renewal and healing.
- Begin rediscovering the softness I buried just to survive.
- Reconnect with myself in moments of stillness and truth.
- Take time to realign with my purpose and remember my why.
- Start releasing resistance to change and gently embrace new beginnings.
The Last Words…
"December — the last chapter. The month that exposes what you've carried and what you're finally ready to release. A time to stand still for a moment and actually see how much you survived, how much you rebuilt, and how many times you rose when no one noticed. Let this season remind you of your strength — the kind you earned in silence. Your growth— the kind that didn't look pretty. And your hope — the kind you fought to keep alive. December is your reset. Your promise to yourself that the next version of you will be louder than the storms that tried to break you. Here's to the chapter you're writing next. Unapologetically."

WINTER TEAM PREVIEWS
Basketball - Men
Wells Basketball is hungry to make an impact in the PIL this season. This year’s squad has a little bit of everything, and is ready to prove it. In year two under Coach Max Trezise, Wells wants to play a team-first brand of basketball that emphasizes defense, toughness, and playing together, for one another. Assistant Coach Jake Wiles is now joined by new assistants Earl Chaney, who brings decades of coaching experience in the Portland area, and alumni and former Wilson player Omar Rasheed, who brings a legacy to our program. We feature 7 seniors (Ahmad Surur, Abdirazaq Ali, Max Spicer, Camryn Shea, Anas Ali, Joah Kuehlthau, and Payton Harrison) 2 Juniors (Muhammed Carter and Blake Karman) and 4 sophomores (Sufyan Carter, Xavier Love-Shabazz, Ammar Ahmed, and Ian Garfinkle.) Show up, get loud, and we’ll play as hard as we can for you every night.
Our JV squad features solid contributors and veteran leadership on the court. Coach Garrett Norman has his players going strong on both ends of the court. With 3 Juniors and 8 sophomores, our JV team plays with toughness, energy, and grit. Liam Mishcon, Charlie Small, and Oliver Carr provide scoring punch and experience, Nolan Lynch, Nick Dhynes, Ivan Kos bring strength and defensive pressure, Grayson Allen can knock down the 3 ball from anywhere, Keaton Stermer does everything and makes the team run well, while Sam Johnson, Seneca Semau, and Duncan Soergel add much needed depth to a team ready to compete.
Our Frosh enter year two under Josh Martin, who has his boys playing together and learning every day. This group of players are gym rats, and are ready to grow and improve every day. They’re excited to be playing high school basketball, and will be the future of the program. Keep up that hard work and it’ll pay off fellas!

A New Chapter Begins!
The anticipation and excitement for the 2025-26 IBW Women’s Basketball season has been growing since practice began November 17. The program embraces a year defined by growth, energy, and fresh talent.
This season marks a significant transition for the program, following the graduation of a memorable class of eight seniors. A committed group of six seniors return and will be the bedrock of our program this year.
Senior Leadership will be vital this season. The primary focus for our veteran players will be to
provide steady leadership, strong play and positive guidance. The varsity roster is young,
featuring many student-athletes stepping onto the varsity court for the first time. The seniors
experience and mentorship will be crucial in setting a competitive and positive tone for the team.
The Future is Now. In addition to an excellent sophomore class, our program is energized by an
exceptionally strong incoming freshmen class of 19 student-athletes. This large, talented group
provides tremendous depth and excitement for the future of the program at every level.
We are fortunate to have our incredible coaches returning to lead our student-athletes. Their
collective experience and commitment are invaluable to develop our players both on and off the
court. A special welcome to Valerie Jackson, who joins the program as our new JV2 coach!
From the first whistle, this group has demonstrated the characteristics that make coaching truly
rewarding. A great group of student-athletes who bring tons of energy to practice every day.
They work incredibly hard and are exceptionally coachable. We are focused on development and
teamwork, and we are excited to see the IBW Women’s Basketball program continue to grow
together throughout the season.
Expect to see teams competing with passion and improve with every game!
Let’s GO GUARDIANS!!!
- Head Coach, Glen Coblens
Cheer
Competition season is officially getting started! After a long summer, and a long football season, it is time for our Guardian cheer team to shine! Taking on a new style of competition and a new tough division this season, our cheerleaders are excited to see what this year has in store for us. This part of the season brings a new level of intensity for our cheerleaders. In this division, there is no room for anything less than excellence, and our Guardian cheerleaders are up for the challenge! While competition season is very exciting, you can also catch us on the sidelines at basketball games! We look forward to bringing energy, spirit, and pride to the gym. We have spent all of fall winter celebrating every win with your teams, and we hope you can celebrate the wins with ours this winter!
- Head Coach, Lauren Peterson
Swimming
Ida B. Wells Swimming is launching into era of growth, powered by a massive influx of talented first-year athletes who now make up nearly 50% of the roster. Leading this energized team are six dedicated senior captains: Dylan Amato, Sophie Lafrenz, Bella Malynowski, Neea Mende, Eian Peng, and Elsie Rainka.
Be ready for some spectacular races from our returning state competitors Claire Niemeyer, Eian Peng, and Keelin Shockley. They are also vital mentors, running weekly clinics with new swimmers to ensure that their legacy of IBW excellence in swimming continues.
This season, the focus is process over placement: emphasizing technical mastery and the rapid development of fundamentals. By committing to daily practice and achieving personal bests in both skills and times, our swimmers are laying the foundation for the years to come. The future of IBW Swimming is bright and ready to make some waves!
-Head Coach, Shelley Hughes
Wrestling
The 2025-2026 season is off to a great start. Practices have been fun and full of hard working athletes. One of our main focuses for the season is continuous improvement and we have already started to see it happening. The team is a fantastic blend of 9th graders, new wrestlers, and a good deal of experience and athletes that are more than willing to teach others. We are excited about one of our busiest years ever and hope that the extra match days allow our team to form a tighter bond with each other. Individually, we have 5 returning state qualifiers that are hungry for another trip to the Memorial Coliseum: Shae Morrison, Lucius Coon, Genevie Mondero, Linda James, and Zorina Johnson. Zorina is looking for her 3rd consecutive state title and is regarded as one of the best wrestlers in the country. Shae is already ahead of where he was last season and is developing into an exemplary athlete/coach. In addition, Roman Tubay is hoping for his first trip to the state meet as are a number of 2nd and 3rd year wrestlers. We are excited to again be hosting our own tournament on 1/31 with a small number of both boys and girls teams. Most importantly, we are looking forward to a season filled with good times, ongoing development, and a continued love of the sport.
-Head Coach, Tony Petraglia
Oregon Athletic Coaches Association and Positive Athlete for December
Congratulations to Senior, Zorina Johnson for being the OACA and Positive Athlete highlight for the month of December!
GUARDIAN ATHLETES-OF-THE-WEEK
Cheer: Naya Pratt, Junior
Basketball - Men: Ahmad Surur, Senior
Ahmad has had a strong start to the season on both ends of the floor. His leadership has helped lift up his teammates, his inspired play has brought energy, and his voice has been a strong presence on the court and in the locker room. Ahmad can create, knock down 3’s, make impressive shifty finishes in the lane, find teammates that are open, and play scrappy defense. Ahmad is a senior on a mission, and he wants to make the most of his final season in a Wells uniform. Wells has played some of the best teams in the State of Oregon to start their season, and Ahmad has made sure our team fought hard. We expect big things from Ahmad throughout the season, great job, keep it up Ahmad!
Swimming - Men: Girard Harvieux, Freshman
Girard is a powerful and indispensable new asset to the Ida B Wells swim team. He is defined by his incredible work ethic and consistently gives his all. He listens intently to coaching, allowing him to quickly improve and adapt, even if he sometimes underestimates his own talent.
With his good habits and flexibility, he is a true team player who steps up wherever needed. Girard is set for great things and will certainly be a foundational part of the future success of our team!
Swimming - Women: Neea Mende, Senior
The IBW Swim Team is lucky to have Neea Mende, one of our remarkable team captains, who is truly the heart and backbone of our program.
For four years, Neea has been integral to IBW Swimming, shaping our culture with her positive attitude and commitment. She is an exceptional mentor, always cheering and supportive, and consistently leads by example. Neea reliably steps in wherever she is needed, embodying the spirit of a true team player.
Neea kicked off her final season with a spectacular performance at our first meet, achieving personal bests in every single event! Even more impressively, the first-half splits of all her races were personal bests for those distances as well.
We can't wait to watch Neea continue to improve, excel, and inspire her teammates as the season progresses.
Wrestling - Women
Lena Mende, Senior
Week of December 8
In only her second year of wrestling, Lena has developed into an incredible team leader and difficult opponent on the mat. Saturday she finished 4th at 105 pounds, her first placement in her young career. Lena's wins showcased how much she learned and are near perfect copies of everything we teach. She is a relentless worker and fierce competitor, yet one of the nicest, most empathetic individuals on the team. She isn't afraid to teach others what she has learned and is gaining more and more confidence with her ability every match. The future is bright for Lena and we are excited to see her succeed.
Saya Grigg, Junior,
Week of December 15
Saya continued her winning ways at Lincoln, this time wrestling to an impressive 2nd place finish. Saya had some crazy matches throughout the day and ended up going 3-1 with three pins. She is working diligently at practice and taking time to help new wrestlers learn from her experience and knowledge. We continue to see her gain confidence and learn from her mistakes, all of which point to a very successful season.
Wrestling - Men
Isaac Freeman, Junior
Week of December 8
We are so excited to have Isaac back wrestling with us. After missing almost 2 years due to injuries, Isaac had a tremendous opening weekend, going 5-3. Isaac is an incredibly hard worker and is always open to learning more to become a better wrestler. He isn't afraid to try new techniques in matches, and treats every opponent with respect. When he isn't preparing for his own match, he is almost always matside for his teammates, rooting them on. We are thrilled at the progress Isaac has made in such a short time and can't wait for what the rest of the season has in store.
Art Summers, Sophomore
Week of December 15
Art matched Saya's earlier 2nd place finish with one of his own. Art spent the majority of the off-season working out and improving his wrestling. It is definitely starting to show, with this being his best tournament performance of his young high school career. Art never backs down from challenges at practice and learning to adapt to his opponents. He is courteous to his coaches, opponents, and officials, and we are excited to see Art continue to have success.

Athletic Trainers Corner
Hello from your friendly neighborhood athletic trainer! Here’s a brief recap of our Fall season from the injury side:
Injuries Reported: 134
Unique Athlete Visits: 100 (~22% of all Fall athletes)
Top 5 Injuries:
1. Concussion (29)
2. Ankle Sprain (15)
3. Knee Sprain (8)
4. Shoulder Sprain (6)
5. Lower Leg Strain (4)
A huge THANK YOU to parents and coaches who walked along side all our injured athletes through last season!
Going in to Winter season, here are a few things you should know:
1. Concussion protocol has changed. There is a new law that requires medical documentation of a
concussion to receive school accommodations. If your athlete sustains a concussion during
athletics or extracurricular activities (eg: car accident, snowboarding, etc) they will need to go in
to see their medical provider and get a written diagnosis of a concussion.
2. Student health centers are FREE for students. And they usually have pretty short waiting times.
If your athlete needs to be seen after a concussion or if they need to renew their physical, the
Student Health Centers are available free of cost. Cleveland High School’s clinic is the nearest
location to us.
3. Wash your hands! As we head into winter illness season, please remind your student athlete to
wash their hands and avoid going to practice if they are sick.
Thank you, and Happy Holidays!
