Week 11

Dear MUMS Community,

Thanks to everyone who attended PT conferences this past Friday. We recognize how challenging it can be to make these meetings work and also really value the partnership. Please look for a survey later in the newsletter regarding how to share your feedback.

Tonight we have our first Dance of the 2024-2025 school year. We are excited to experience the joy with students and hope that we have a good turn out! Thanks in advance to all of the folks who have committed to chaperoning!

Lastly, this is a reminder that we have begun Quarter 2. Please ask your child about their new Mixed Team class and look for their report card in the mail at the end of next week.

As always, have a great weekend!

From the MYP Coordinators

Recently, 7th grade art students collaborated to create pop art sculptures of their favorite bagged snacks! Along with learning about historical and current pop artists, each group had to use their knowledge of color theory and match their chosen bags' colors perfectly. These “delicious” art pieces are on display at MUMS. Come check them out! Thanks, Lisa, for your creative spirit!

Thank You!

Thank you for providing us with all of the goodies on October 17th, they were yummy and just what we needed. There are a few items (dishes, bags, etc) that were not picked up and are now in the front office. These items can be picked up between 7:30am and 3:30pm. Again thank you for everything.

Early Dismissals

This is a reminder to all Caregivers that if you call after 9:00 am to report an early dismissal please call our main office at 382-1600. This is to ensure that the message was received and that all parties are aware of the early dismissal (student, teacher, office) otherwise your message may not be received in a timely manner.

Thank you!

Counseling Office Additions

As you all know, this fall, we've been operating with one less school counselor than we normally have. Over the past few months we've been working hard to find ways to add additional support in counseling as we know how important this is to a middle school.

To that end, I'd like to welcome Angela Scavo to our counseling team 2 days/week. Angela is a local mental health professional who has experience working with the middle school population.

Additionally, Ilana Brett, retired MUMS counselor with years and years of experience working with middle school students has joined us three days/week through the remainder of 2024.

Students may experience their support in different ways just like our regular counselors, but certainly reach out to Lauren Daley (Teams 1&2) and Laura Emilo (Teams 3&4) with any questions or concerns.

We are so excited that they have joined our team and are grateful for their commitment to MUMS!

Parent Teacher Conference Feedback

As many of you know, PT conferences looked different this fall than they have in the past. To that end, we would like your feedback on MUMS Parent Teacher Conferences that took place on Friday, November 1st so that we can use it to inform our March conference structure. By filling out this survey we will better understand what worked for you and what could work better for you and your family. We value your partnership and your feedback and look forward to improving upon ways to make our partnership more effective. Thanks in advance.

Winter Athletic Sign Ups

Sign ups for winter athletics are now open. Families can sign up using this link Winter Athletic Sign ups. In the winter MUMS offers gymnastics (open to all grades), wrestling (open to 7th and 8th graders), winter xtreme running (open to all grades), and 7th and 8th grade boys and girls basketball. If you have a 6th grader interested in wrestling or basketball they should plan on participating with Middlebury Parks and Recreation.

Dance- Friday November 8th

We will be hosting our first dance of the school year on Friday, November 8th from 7-9pm in the MUMS Gym. The theme of the dance will be "Make It Glow Party". The dance costs $5 to attend and all proceeds go to Friends of MUMS to help pay for the 8th grade class trip and other fun activities. Every student must bring a signed permission slip the night of the dance to be allowed in the building. Permission slips will be sent home with students on Monday, November 4th or you can view and print it here Dance Permission Slip. Please take time to look over the permission slip with your child so they understand the behavioral expectations leading up to and at the dance. Failure to uphold these expectations could result in a social suspension which would result in your child be prohibited from attending the dance

If you are interested in helping chaperone the dance or would be willing to donate food to concession sales, Friends of MUMS has created a sign-up genius here https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0548AFAF29AAFA7-52646358-mums#/

8th Grade Class Trip Planning Meeting- Nov 14th

If you are interested in helping plan for the 8th grade class trip we will be holding our first meeting on Thursday November 14th at 5:30pm in the MUMS Library

MYP Unit overviews

We want to share a new resource to help you engage with your student and understand what they are working on in classes: You can now find unit overviews for each of your child’s classes on our Middle Years Program page. These were designed collaboratively by our teachers including key components of each subject. Additionally, they suggest questions to help you talk to your student about their learning. We hope you find this resource valuable.
