Back to School

In addition to soaking up every beautiful day that we've been having, I have been reading a set of articles from the Atlantic magazine written by Russell Shaw called Raising Resilient Children. The first article suggests that children are better able to navigate setbacks when their parents provide only gentle guidance and emotional support, but allow children autonomy to handle the setbacks on their own. This builds a sense of independence and competency for children.
In case you are curious and would like to read the entire article, here is a link to the first article and there is a subscribe button (It's free) if you are interested in receiving the rest of the articles.
And speaking of resilient children, please see the note below if your child is ready to be an independent walker/bus rider.

K-2nd School Sing - September 25th
If you have a kindergartener, 1st, or 2nd grader in your family, you are invited to join us for the first school sing of the year. It will be on Friday, Sept. 25th, at 2:10.
Independent Bus Riders and Walkers
If you are comfortable having your child get off the bus at the end of the day without an adult at the bus stop, you can send an email to hssoffice@sau88.net telling us that. We will let the bus driver know.
In a similar vein, if you are comfortable having your child exit the building on their own at 3:00, you can let us know that as well and we'll add Independent Walker as a choice for you in PikMyKid. You will then not need to sign them out on PikMyKid as they will just exit the building when the bell rings.
Spirit Days
In addition to the two Fridays listed below, students can always wear HSS spirit wear on Fridays.

Vaccinations . . . Flu shot season is upon us
The Centers for Disease Control recommend that anyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine this season. Although most people receive the flu shot injection, a nasal version of the flu vaccine is available for most people ages 2 - 49. Both APD and DHMC offer flu vaccines for patients. It is advised that people make an appointment through your medical provider’s office to receive a flu vaccine. Many local pharmacies offer flu vaccine clinics as well. Unfortunately, our school district will not be hosting a flu clinic this year. Be sure to get vaccinated to help stay healthy during these colder, winter months.
Backpacks
Did you know that backpacks should not weigh more than 15% of your child’s body weight? More specifically, a child who weighs 48 pounds should have a backpack that does not weigh more than 7 pounds - the size of an average newborn baby! Children use backpacks to transport many things between school and home, so make sure that only essential items go in backpacks such as food, water, and books.
Head Lice
Unfortunately, a normal part of elementary school is head lice. Although lice can be bothersome to some children, The Centers for Disease Control do not advise that students be excluded from school. As long as your child can focus in school and the symptoms of the lice are not a distraction, children are welcome to attend school. Please reach out if you have questions or need more information on proper treatment for lice.
Take good care,
