At Proviso Math & Science Academy, we believe that learning extends beyond the classroom and includes recognizing the people and stories that have shaped our world. With that in mind, we are proud to acknowledge and celebrate Women’s History Month throughout the month of March.

Women’s History Month is a time to recognize the countless contributions women have made to our communities, our nation, and the world. From groundbreaking achievements in science and education to leadership in social justice, the arts, and public service, women have played a vital role in shaping history and inspiring future generations. We are proud to celebrate the women who inspire our students every day, including the educators, staff members, family members, and leaders who make a difference in the lives of our young people.

We would also like to share a few important reminders with our families:

Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place on Thursday, March 12, from 1:00–3:00 PM in person and from 5:00–8:00 PM virtually. The deadline to schedule conferences is March 11 at 4:00 PM. Please check your email for the scheduling links shared by teachers.

AP Literature Takes on Hamlet — On Stage and Off 📖🪶

Students in the Advanced Placement Literature & Composition classes recently brought Shakespeare to life, quite literally, as they practiced delivering dramatic lines in Shakespearean language and honed their performance techniques before beginning our study of Hamlet. Through interactive activities, students explored rhythm, tone, and meaning in early modern English, building confidence with the language before diving into the text itself.

Soon after, our AP Literature students were joined by students from College Reading and Writing for a field trip to the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, where they experienced an abridged, modernized production of Hamlet. The bold adaptations sparked strong opinions and thoughtful discussion. Students analyzed costume design, language updates, staging decisions, and other directorial choices, comparing them to Shakespeare’s original text.

Highlights of the day included Hamlet breaking the fourth wall and interacting directly with the audience, an engaging post-show talk-back Q&A with the actors, and lunch at Navy Pier. A few students even braved the cold to step outside for a closer look at Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline before heading back to PMSA.

Overall, reviews of the day were overwhelmingly positive, and the experience deepened our conversations about performance, interpretation, and the enduring relevance of Shakespeare’s work.

We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who helped make this enriching opportunity possible:

Mr. Rutstein, Ms. Paulus, our parent chaperones, Ms. Teruel, Ms. Garzon, Ms. Ramirez, Ms. Esquivel, Ms. McElroy, Dr. Mason, Dr. Sanchez, District Administration, Ms. Reyes, the Business Office, our Security Staff, Food and Transportation Services, and all of our students who represented PMSA with integrity, respect, and enthusiasm.

AP Literature Celebrates Black History Month Through Black Joy 📚🖤💛❤️

This February, our AP Literature & Composition students celebrated Black History Month by creating and presenting thoughtful, creative, and impactful projects centered on the theme of Black Joy. Through research, analysis, and artistic expression, students explored how joy can build community, preserve cultural memory, affirm identity, and even function as an act of resistance.

After completing their projects, students participated in a digital gallery walk, engaging with one another’s work and deepening their understanding of how joy operates across art forms, history, and lived experience.

We learned about writers and poets such as Maya Angelou and Amanda Gorman; artists including Amy Sherald, Ernie Barnes, and Kehinde Wiley; photographers like Alexis Hunley and Kwame Brathwaite; singers, musicians, and genres ranging from Louis Armstrong and Olivia Dean to Doechii, Hip-Hop, and Afro-Pop; and cultural touchstones like The Wiz and Black Panther. Students also explored significant cultural expressions, including “indigo fingers,” fashion icons, hair traditions, culinary heritage, and faith practices.

Seeing the range and depth of everyone’s projects was inspiring, uplifting, and deeply affirming. Our classroom became a space not only for literary analysis, but for celebration, reflection, and collective appreciation of the many ways joy shapes and sustains communities.
