The Best Day of Your Life

THE LIBRARY IS MORE THAN BOOKS!

πŸ“šβœ¨ THE LIBRARY IS MORE THAN BOOKS! βœ¨πŸ“š

The Library is not just a place to open a book and open your mindβ€”it is a place to build relationships, discover passions, celebrate talents, and get to know our students beyond the classroom. πŸ’œ

This week, I had the opportunity to see that firsthand with Chevelle, an avid reader who loves spending time in the Library. πŸ“–πŸ’•

While reading is one of her passions, Chevelle also shared another amazing talent with usβ€”her beautiful singing voice! 🎀✨

Moments like this remind me why the Library matters. When we create a welcoming space where students feel seen, valued, and comfortable being themselves, we discover the incredible gifts they have to share.

In the Library, we READ. We CONNECT. We CREATE. We DISCOVER. We CELEBRATE! πŸ“šπŸŽ€πŸ’«

Keep shining, Chevelle! Your talent is LEGENDARY! πŸ’œ

πŸ“š HOW TO FIND BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY

5 STEPS TO FIND YOUR BOOK!

STEP 1: KNOW WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR πŸ”Ž

Start with one of these:

πŸ“– TITLE – Do you know the name of the book?
✍🏾 AUTHOR – Do you know who wrote it?
πŸ”’ TOPIC – What do you want to learn about?
🎭 GENRE – What kind of story do you want to read?

No title or author? No problem! Start with a genre or topic.

STEP 2: FIND THE RIGHT SECTION πŸ“š

Look around the library for section signs.

FICTION πŸ“–
Fiction books are arranged alphabetically by the author's last name.

Example:

ANG β†’ COL β†’ ROW β†’ SHA

NONFICTION πŸ”’
Nonfiction books are arranged by the Dewey Decimal System.

Example:

500 β†’ 600 β†’ 700 β†’ 800 β†’ 900

GRAPHIC NOVELS πŸ–ΌοΈ
Go to the designated Graphic Novel section and follow the arrangement used in your library.

BIOGRAPHIES πŸ‘€
Look in the Biography section. Check the call number and alphabetical arrangement.

REFERENCE πŸ“•
Look for the separate Reference section. These books are usually identified with a REF label.

STEP 3: READ THE SPINE LABEL 🏷️

The spine label is your book's shelf address!

Look at the letters and numbers on the spine.

Examples:

FIC ROW
➑️ Fiction β€” Rowling

920 ADA
➑️ Biography/biographical collection

921 KIN
➑️ Individual biography

REF 030
➑️ Reference

TIP: Don't judge the book's location by its cover. CHECK THE SPINE LABEL!

STEP 4: FOLLOW THE SHELF ORDER β¬…οΈβž‘οΈ

Move along the shelf and compare the labels.

For nonfiction:

920 β†’ 921 β†’ 922 β†’ 930

For books with the same number:

920 ADA β†’ 920 BRO β†’ 920 DAV

For fiction:

FIC ANG β†’ FIC COL β†’ FIC ROW β†’ FIC SHA

πŸ“Œ NUMBER FIRST. LETTERS SECOND.

STEP 5: CHECK, PULL & READ! πŸŽ‰

When you find a book:

βœ… Check the title.
βœ… Check the author.
βœ… Make sure it matches what you're looking for.
βœ… Carefully remove the book from the shelf.
βœ… Follow the library checkout procedure.
βœ… START READING! πŸ“–πŸ”₯

🚨 CAN'T FIND IT?

DON'T GIVE UP!

Try these librarian-approved strategies:

πŸ”Ž Look one or two shelves above and below.
πŸ“š Check the neighboring call numbers.
πŸ”„ Make sure the books are in order.
πŸ‘€ Check whether the book has been shelved in a special section.
πŸ™‹πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ ASK THE LIBRARIAN!

πŸ“š 5 Literacy Tips for High School Students

1. READ SOMETHING EVERY DAY πŸ“–
Even 10–15 minutes of reading each day can strengthen your vocabulary, comprehension, and focus. Choose something you actually enjoy!

2. DON’T SKIP THE WORDS YOU DON’T KNOW πŸ”Ž
When you encounter an unfamiliar word, pause and use the context, a dictionary, or an online resource to figure out what it means.

3. ASK QUESTIONS πŸ€”
Good readers are curious readers! Ask yourself: What is the author trying to say? Why is this important? What evidence supports this idea?

4. WRITE IT DOWN ✍🏾
Take notes, highlight important information, summarize what you read, and write down your thoughts. Writing helps you remember and understand what you read.

5. EXPLORE DIFFERENT GENRES πŸŒŽπŸ“š
Don't limit yourself to one type of book. Try mystery, fantasy, science fiction, biography, historical fiction, romance, nonfiction, graphic novels, and more. Your next favorite book may be in a genre you've never tried!

🐯 TIGER LITERACY CHALLENGE

Read it. Question it. Write about it. Explore it. SHARE IT!

Every page you read builds the readerβ€”and the futureβ€”you are becoming! πŸ’œπŸ–€πŸ€πŸ“š
