PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Friday, October 10th
Thank you for your flexibility with the rescheduled Evacuate Drill. It went very well on Thursday and the Arlington Heights Fire Department were impressed with how well we executed our drill.
Thank you to all who have signed up for a Parent Teacher Conference. The signup genius will close on Friday, October 17th, so please sign up by then if you would like to meet with your child(ren)'s teacher.
I hope those of you who are attending the Progressive Tailgate tomorrow have a wonderful time and meet some new people.
Thanks,
Ellie Chin
A MESSAGE FROM THE SOCIAL WORKER (NEW POST!)
As the seasons change and the weather gets a bit chillier, please know that we have a selection of coats/hats/gloves etc, available for families in need. Please reach out to Barb Donahue, our school social worker's confidential email, bdonahue@sd25.org for more information or to request assistance.
Additionally, Barb Donahue has access to other community resources which might be helpful to your family - food pantries, holiday assistance, etc. Please reach out and she will be more than happy to help you!
SAFETY ON SCHOOL PROPERTY (NEW POST!)
The nice weather means lots of bicycles, scooters and other wheeled friends coming and going to school! The Parent/Student Handbook includes information about biking to and from school. Please read the following excerpt from page 40.
The District encourages bicycle safety and recommends that safe-biking procedures be discussed with your student.
• Ride with traffic – on the right side of the street
• Ride single file – close to the curb
• Do not cut in and out among parked cars
• Do not carry passengers
• Wear a bicycle helmet
• Do not ride on school grounds. When you arrive on the school grounds, walk your bicycle to the proper bicycle rack
• Park your bicycle in the bicycle rack, using an appropriate lock
If a student fails to comply with these rules, the District may decide not to permit them to bring a bicycle onto school property.
Anyone arriving at school with a bike or scooter must walk it to the bike racks in the morning. After school, students must walk bikes, scooters, etc. off school grounds. This includes walking them on the sidewalk around the school and across the school's crosswalks as well.
As a reminder, there is no supervision on the blacktop until 8:50am. Students should not be dropped off before this time. When dropping students off at school, please use the car line or park in the parking lot and walk them over to the blacktop.
We appreciate everyone's cooperation in keeping our community safe.
AUTHOR VISIT: Weds., October 22nd - 3rd-5th Graders (NEW POST!)
Experience Earth history like you’ve never seen it before with infographics, maps, and illustrations that bring fascinating extinct animals to life. Rachel Ignotofsky makes paleontology accessible and entertaining in this stunningly illustrated journey across more than 4.5 billion years. She will be speaking to 3rd-5th graders on Wednesday, October 22nd and if you are interested in ordering a signed copy of her book use this link. Orders are due by Sunday, October 19th.
3rd & 4th GRADE FAMILY NIGHT (NEW POST!)
3rd and 4th Grade families are you ready to "glow big or glow home?" if so, be sure to mark your calendars for this very special PTA sponsored event! Don't forget to bring your own water bottle and "glow with the flow!"
ICTM MATH CONTEST (NEW POST!)
Each grade level contest consists of two parts. The first is the team competition. Interested students will form teams that consist of five members. Teams will be asked to work together to answer 20 questions in 25 minutes. The second competition is for individuals. Individual students will be asked to work on 8 questions for 20 minutes. Scores of the 2 best teams and top 10 individuals per grade level will count toward the school total.
Students came home with forms on Monday. If they would like to be part of the contest, completed forms are due back by Friday, October 17th.
More information and the forms can be found below.
PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES (UPDATED POST!)
On Sunday, September 28th you should have received an email with the link to sign up for Fall conferences, which will take place on Thursday, October 23rd and Friday, October 24th. School will NOT be in session on these dates. Conference times are available on Thursday morning, afternoon, and evening as well as Friday morning. Each conference is scheduled for 20 minutes.
Conferences are a great way to connect with your child(ren)'s teacher, spend time in the classroom and hear about your child's progress this year. We appreciate the ongoing partnership and collaboration that is shared in the Patton community. Please note that there is only one conference time slot for each student.
Fourth and Fifth Grade Parents: The conference times are for meeting with your child's homeroom teacher. If your child has a different teacher for math and you have specific math questions, please email him or her directly.
HALLOWEEN INFORMATION (2nd POST!)
We are still in the beginning of October, but Halloween will be here before we know it! I thought it would be helpful, especially to our new families, to share about how Halloween is celebrated here at Patton!
The morning proceeds as a typical day, but the afternoon looks a little different.
On Friday, October 31st students can either go home for lunch to change into their costumes or stay at school and change into their costumes after they have eaten (more information about this process will be shared soon). Students that go home for lunch should return by 1:10 pm to ensure they are in their classrooms by the time the bell rings.
At around 1:45 pm we will begin our annual Halloween parade around the neighborhood (see image to see our route). Parents are welcome to come and stand along the parade route to watch the students go by! Please know that the parade will be cancelled in the case of inclement weather.
Classroom parties will then take place following the parade.
This is always such a fun day and we are already looking forward to it!
3rd - 5th GRADE AUTHOR VISIT - Thursday, October 16th (2nd POST!)
Author, illustrator and Academy Award-winning writer and director Alan Barillaro will be visiting 3rd through 5th grade students at Patton on Thursday, October 16th to share his illustrated novel, Bunns Rabbit. Bunns Rabbit is a deeply moving tale of a brave rabbit who sets out on a quest to save her home and family—no matter what it takes. The book is full of rich storytelling and stunning artwork, offering a heartfelt journey that resonates with children and adults alike.
Alan will share the story of Bunns Rabbit with students and provide a glimpse into his experience writing and illustrating books and working on animated films. Alan won an Academy Award for his role as writer and director of the animated short film Piper and has been supervising animator on many other popular theatrical releases, including The Incredibles, Incredibles 2, WALL-E, and Brave.
