As our spring sports regular seasons are winding down and everyone is gearing up for the post-season state tournament series, the Brickies appreciated teachers and celebrated seniors this past week!

Some rain and colder temps tried to throw a wrench into competition over the last 6 days, but as the band Starship might've said, "Nothin's Gonna Stop Us Now" ... or maybe "We Built This City"? Either way, PLAY BALL!

Hopefully all the mom's out there had a very HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Perfect gift for mom? Flowers? Candy? Clean your room? .... na ... how about this week's edition of BricksCenter!

Girls Tennis

On Monday night, the Brickies celebrated SENIOR NIGHT and faced the Whiting Oilers. Prior to the first serve, Hobart recognized seniors Natalie Crowley, Isis Fleming, Addy Williams and Alyssa Meinert for their outstanding careers in purple & gold! Unfortunately, the Oilers played spoiler and defeated our girls 1-4. Fleming & Williams were the only victors in the non-conference loss.

Tuesday brought the Griffith Panthers to The Friendly City and another opportunity to swing the rackets! In another non-conference matchup, our girls FLIPPED THE SWITCH and reversed the score from Monday's contest to earn in impressive 4-1 VICTORY!! Crowley was FANTASTIC at #1 singles in winning 6-1, 6-0! Juniors Emily Cicillian (#2 singles) & Leilani Venegas (#3 singles) also won in straight sets and the dynamic duo of Fleming & Williams did not even drop a game at #1 dubs (6-0, 6-0) ... WOW!! WHAT A PERFORMANCE!!

The Brickies were originally scheduled to play Andrean on Thursday, but with so many of our girls earning degrees from Ivy Tech that night, the match was postponed to Monday, 5/12.

On Saturday morning, our girls were on the road at New Prairie High School for the Cougar Invite ...and the Brickies were FANTASTIC!! Natalie Crowley WON the #1 singles title ...Isis Fleming paired up with Emily Cicillian to finish 3rd @ #1 doubles AND they won the Sportsmanship Award for the tournament ... sophomore Marissa Salamanca & freshman Neveah Rodriguez placed 4th @ #2 doubles ... Leilani Venegas was 5th @ #2 singles and freshman Abigail Rinas finished 6th @ #3 singles to help our girls place 2nd overall in the team standings!!

Hobart is currently 8-4 on the year and still boasts a 3-1 record in NCC play! The Brickies will be busy this upcoming week with 4 matches as they wrap up the regular season! IHSAA Sectional play begins Wednesday, 5/21 ... YOU'VE GOT THIS GIRLS!! WE BELIEVE IN YOU!!

Baseball

Monday night, the Brickies were playing at home against the Morton Governors in a non-conference showdown. Hobart wasted NO time in getting control of this one as our boys plated 5 runs in the first inning of play and then added 5 more in the 3rd! WOW!! After the Govs finally got on the board with a run in the top half of the 4th, the Bricks scored 4 more in the bottom half of the frame and then closed the door in the 5th to earn a DOMINANT 14-1 VICTORY by mercy rule! Freshman Michael Klaich was ON FIRE going 3-for-3 on the night with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored!! Senior Ben Sullivan notched 2 hits, classmate Connor Stafford had a triple, and fellow senior Landon Koritko scored 2 runs in the lopsided win! In his first appearance of the year after Tommy John surgery, senior pitcher Drew Burris came on in relief and struck out the side in the 5th inning to end the game!! WHAT A NIGHT FOR THE BRICKIES!!

On Wednesday, Hobart was in Hammond at PNW for another non-conference matchup with Hammond Central. In what looked like a rerun of the previous game, the Brickies once again scored 5 first inning runs to seize control and never looked back in another lopsided 14-2 VICTORY!! Led by sophomore Alex Mays with 3 hits & 2 RBI and seniors Alex Martin & Aidan Leonard, who each collected 2 hits & 3 RBI, our guys scored in all 5 innings of play!! On the bump, sophomore Brandon Stafford, junior Jayden Standish and Klaich combined to surrender only 3 hits and 2 runs in the win!

After back-to-back W's this past week, Hobart is now 10-9 on the year and still an even 4-4 in NCC play. Our boys will be back in action Monday against the Morton Governors. LET'S GO BRICKS!!

Softball

It was a CRAZY busy week for the Lady Brickies with games on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday followed by a tournament to conclude the week down at Twin Lakes High School!

On Monday, the Valparaiso Vikings invaded Hobart for a non-conference contest ...led 7-3 after 4 innings of play and then exploded for 8 more runs over the final 3 innings to leave town with a 15-4 win. Senior Taylor Lopez went 2-for-3 with a double, a HOME RUN and 3 RBI in the loss.

Tuesday night, the Brickies played under the lights over at Highland and SHINED BRIGHT! After a scoreless first inning, Hobart plated 6 runs in the 2nd to take a COMMANDING lead and never looked back on their way to an IMPRESSIVE 11-4 VICTORY!! Senior Ladan Weinman & sophomore Aurora Ciesielski were a 2-girl WRECKING CREW as they combined for 4 hits, 2 HOME RUNS, and 5 RBI in the win! Senior Emili Knestrict also had two hits and sophomore Nora Hornak finished with two hits & two stolen bases!!

On Wednesday, Hobart had a back-and-forth SLUGFEST against NCC rival Hanover Central. Back on April 8th, the Wildcats stunned the Brickies 13-1 on their home turf. This time around, our girls were looking for some payback. First inning ... Hanover scores 2 runs, Hobart scores 2 runs. Second inning ... Hanover scores 3 runs, Hobart scores 6!! Over the next 3 innings, the Wildcats plated 8 more runs vs the Brickies 2 to make it 13-10. Ultimately, Hanover hung on for a 15-11 win. It was quite a game ...each time our girls got down, they responded and kept fighting - lots to be proud of!! Lopez collected 3 hits & 3 RBI ...Weinman, Hornak, Knestrict, junior Samantha Stankich & sophomore Kylie Bulatovich each finished with 2 hits as the Bricks pounded out 15 total for the game.

On Friday & Saturday, Hobart played Rensselaer, Benton Central & Pioneer in pool play games to see who would emerge & play for the 'ship. Against the Bombers in game #1 late Friday night, sophomore Addi Gaffin LAUNCHED a HOME RUN that hasn't landed yet in the bottom of the 10th inning for a WALK-OFF WIN!! Saturday, the Bricks made quick work work work of the Bison & Panthers ... winning both games by a combined 31-7 score to qualify for the title game!! Unfortunately, in the championship, a rematch against Highland did not go the way we hoped and our girls had to settle for a Runner-Up finish. Hornak, Bulatovich, Knestrict & junior Sierra Teel all had 2 hits against Benton Central and Weinman & classmate Addisyn Johnson each collected 3 hits in the win over Pioneer!

Hobart is now an even 10-10 overall on the year. Another busy week awaits with games against Munster, Lowell & Illiana Christian over the next 4 days - GO GET 'EM GIRLS!!

Boys Golf

After picking up our first W of the season on Friday over Bishop Noll, the Brickies were back in action swinging the wrenches 3 times this past week!

Monday afternoon, the Lowell Red Devils met our boys at River Pointe Country Club for an NCC showdown! Sophomores Chase Dukes & Gavin Roper tied for medalist honors for Hobart with rounds of 51 with freshman MJ Scheldberg & fellow sophomore Trevor Paterson backing them up with scoring rounds to give our team a 223 ... not far from the 217 & 211 our boys have shot over the past 2 weeks! Unfortunately, the Devils were sharp and completed the 9-hole course as a team in just 180 strokes to earn the win.

On Tuesday, the Brickies faced Wheeler in match play at 8 different spots! Sophomore Zach Redencich was the lone winner for Hobart in a very competitive contest throughout.

Wednesday brought possibly the toughest test for the Brickies ... a date with Kankakee Valley at Sandy Pines. The Kougars are good, but the test was the course as Sandy Pines is arguably the TOUGHEST to navigate in NWI. As Coach Gary Roach said, "It's long with many elevation changes, huge waste bunkers and water." Still, our boys BATTLED against the difficult conditions and learned a lot about course management, club selection and finding consistency in striking the ball. The Kougars ended up earning a 174-250 win with Roper & Dukes again earning medalist honors for Hobart.

Hobart is now 1-8 overall, but gaining valuable experience each time out! With a group consisting of mostly freshmen & sophomores, let the growth continue!!

Thursday evening was COLD and WINDY, but our Unified Track & Field team was out there GETTING IT DONE ANYWAY!! The location was Crown Point for their 3rd meet of the year and OUR KIDS SHINED!! There were more highlights on Thursday than can be found in a college textbook as the Bricks had MULTIPLE SEASON BEST PERFORMANCES despite the cold temps! Sophomore Zayden Syler was like a SUPER HERO finishing first in the 100, 400 and running a leg on the victorious 4x100 relay! Boys Volleyball

In the final week of the regular season, our boys played 3 games in 4 days and nearly pulled off a hat trick of W's!

Monday night at the Governor's Mansion, the Brickies controlled play right from the first whistle and CRUISED to a 3-0 SWEEP of Hammond Morton!!

On Wednesday, the destination was Kankakee Valley, but the goal was the same ...show improvement as we close down the last few games and prepare for the IHSAA post season. Well Brickie fans, our boys decided to do just that AND EARN A VICTORY at the same time!! For the second time this spring, Hobart secured a win over the Kougars and in the process earned the first back-to-back victories in school history! Sophomores Joel Mock & Nathan Sobczynski, freshman Miles White, senior Levi Snyder and juniors Codi Ketchum, Chris Haymon & John Osgood have led the charge!!

Thursday night at Munster was the regular season finale and the 'Stangs were able to hold off a "game" group of Brickies looking for their 3rd straight W. In a competitive matchup, the hosts picked up the win.

The Brickies concluded the regular season with an overall record of 4-12 ...which is a school record for wins in a season in just our 3rd year of competing! Hobart will open up IHSAA Sectional play next Wednesday over at Andrean against the KV Kougars. GOOD LUCK BOYS!!

Track & Field

On Tuesday, the Brickies hosted Highland and Kankakee Valley in the final regular season track & field meet of the year at James T. Johnston Track here at The Brickyard! Prior to the meet getting underway, Hobart celebrated SENIOR NIGHT and offered a sincere thanks to our seniors & their families for their commitment, dedication, & effort given to Brickie Track & Field throughout the last 4 years ...and then it was GO TIME! As soon as the starter pistol fired, IT WAS ON and our kids SHINED BRIGHT!! Once again, it was senior Taylor Pope (shot put & discus) and junior Aalliah Otero (400 & 200) earning first place in multiple events to help carry the load for our girls! Junior Cassie Cohen (1600), freshman Rylee Christman (300H), and junior Bre Zon (disc) had TERRIFIC performances in placing 2nd in their respective events as the Brickies had multiple PERSONAL BEST times & distances! Unfortunately, the Trojans & Kougars are two of the best (...I say the best) teams in the NCC and they were able to defeat our girls 90-42 (KV) & 78-54 (Highland) ...dropping the Bricks to 2-4 in NCC action.

For the boys, EVERYONE played a role in setting the tone early and finishing strong to earn a DOUBLE VICTORY by scores of 79-53 vs KV and a WHOPPING 119-13 vs Highland!! WOW!! Senior Willy Shearer WON the 100, 200 & 400m dashes AND ran a leg on the victorious 4x400m relay!! Fellow senior Kael Schlosser won the long jump and classmate Deacon Caesar took first in the high jump! Sophomore Bryce Tolliver continued his strong campaign with a victory in the 100m hurdles and a 2nd place finish in the 300H! Junior Adrian Stojkoski was on Shearer's heels the entire night placing 2nd in the 100 & 200 and 3rd in the 400 and ALSO running a leg on the winning 4x400 relay! Senior Patrick O'Connor held down the fort in throwing with 2nd place finishes in both the shot put and disc to help our boys stay UNDEFEATED in NCC competition at a perfect 6-0!! Maybe the most impressive finish of the night was the 100m dash where Hobart took home the TOP 4 PLACES with Shearer, Stojkoski, Schlosser and senior Dillon Hatchett going 1-4!
