Principal's Message
πBirch Lane Elementary families,
What a great first week!
We had a wonderful first week back. Thank you to all the families who donated breakfast and coffee to the staff on the first day of school. It has been so nice to see all the students and staff. Birch Lane truly is "One great place to learn".
8 Days of Eagle Expectations
Students have been learning about being Responsible, Respectful, and Safe at Birch Lane Elementary. Each day, students learn about Eagle Expectations at recess, the MPR, in the hallways, and in the bathroom. Birch Lane students are the best!
Emergency Drills
Last week during an emergency we moved quickly from a Lockdown to a Shelter in place to appropriately address the situation. Davis police were also on campus to address that emergency. Today in our staff meeting, we will be reviewing our safety drills and preparing for safety week. During safety week the students will practice the emergency drills. This is an important time in the year that helps us understand what to do in the event of an emergency.Leadership
Leadership is starting soon. There are many ways students in grades 4-6 can participate. Talk to your students about getting involved.
Thanks everyone!
Warmly,
Principal Sanchez

Need to Know
Picture Day
Friday, September 11th is Picture Day at Birch Lane. For the second year in a row we are using Dorian Studio as our photographer. You can purchase photos online ahead of time at mydorian.com, or up to 4 days afterwards and get free shipping. Or, send your child with the paper order form and have them hand it to the teacher the morning of Picture Day. Photos will arrive to the school about a month later. (Make-up photos will be on October 22). We have a limited number of first come first serve free photo vouchers for parents/guardians who volunteer on picture day. If photo fees are a challenge for you, please consider signing up at this link.
Drop Off and Pick Up
Designated Meeting Area (For families accessing the bike lane entrance)
If you are entering through the back of the school , the designated meeting area is next to the bike racks. Intermediate classes are in session and should be uninterrupted until 3:05 p.m. Please take the first week of school to show your student how to find your designated meeting place.
Designated Meeting Area (For families entering the front of the school)
If you are entering through the front of the school , the designated meeting area is at the tables next to the arboretum. Intermediate classes are in session and should be uninterrupted until 3:05 p.m. Please take the first week of school to show your student how to find your designated meeting place.
Car loading and drop off
If you use the drop off zone take a look at the picture. The area with the blue cars is a designated drop off safety zone. Staff and students will greet at your car door and help your student to the sidewalk. Please stay in your car and pull all the way to the front of the drop off zone to prevent backups. The yellow cars on the picture represent a self-serve loading zone. Please do not leave your car unattended in this area.
Visitor and Classroom Visit Guidelines
To support a safe, secure, and focused learning environment, all classroom visits at Birch Lane Elementary must be scheduled at least one to two school days in advance with the classroom teacher and approved by the principal.
A visitor is anyone who is not a current Birch Lane student or staff member. All visitors are required to:
- Report to the front office upon arrival.
- Sign in using a valid driverβs license or other approved identification.
- Receive authorization to enter campus.
- Remain in the approved areas on campus.
- Wear a visitor badge while on campus.
If you are on campus for dismissal at the end of the day, please remain in the designated meeting area during the designated meeting time.
Visitors should not enter hallways or classrooms unless they have been specifically authorized to do so.
These procedures help us maintain a safe, secure, and distraction free learning environment for all Birch Lane students. Thank you for your cooperation and partnership in supporting our school community.
Scan to School Program
Scan to School is a program part of the city wide Safe Routes to School program that aids in reducing traffic congestion around school campuses. The program provides the following:
1) Maps of safe routes to campus and around town
2) Bike rodeos -- The Davis Police Department gives bike safety test, checks helmet expiration/fit and provides new helmets and lights free of charge that kids may need to safely commute to school.
3) Email or Text Notification -- Parents can receive an email and/or text notification every morning that their child arrived safely to school through our barcode system. Volunteer parents are on campus starting at 8:10am until 2nd bell to scan children in.
4) Incentives -- The more you scan the more you earn. Children are given 0.10 Cents for every trip they take, they receive badges, charms to keep track of their trips, and earn money that they can spend at our 2 monkey money parties per year. We also host events such as Polar pedal, and Bike Parades to the movies.
Request for Volunteers:
If you are free in the morning, and want to volunteer at the school we are looking for scanners for: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 8:10 - 8:35 am. Please email: Carlyauch@gmail.com if you are interested in volunteering. I will be at the bike racks for the first several weeks of school.
Thank you, Carly Copeman
