National Suicide Prevention Month

During September, we are reminded of the importance of mental health and the observance of National Suicide Prevention Month. As school psychologists, we are tasked with numerous responsibilities that significantly impact the mental health wellness of our students. This includes raising awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting resources and strategies for suicide prevention.

Why National Suicide Prevention Month Matters:

Suicide is a significant public health concern that affects individuals of all ages, including our students. School psychologists are uniquely positioned to play a pivotal role in early identification, intervention, and prevention efforts. By acknowledging this month and its significance, we reinforce our commitment to the well-being of our students.

Our Role in Suicide Prevention:

  1. Identifying At-Risk Students: As trained professionals, we are skilled in recognizing signs of emotional distress and suicide risk among students. Early identification is essential for intervention.

  2. Providing Support: We offer essential support to students facing emotional challenges through counseling, crisis intervention, and resource referral.

  3. Educating the School Community: We advocate for mental health awareness, providing information and resources to students, parents, teachers, and staff to reduce stigma and encourage open dialogues.

  4. Collaboration: We work closely with other school professionals, parents, and external mental health experts to ensure a comprehensive support network for our students.

What You Can Do to Help:

  1. Learn the Warning Signs: Educate yourself about the signs of suicide risk. Awareness is the first step in prevention.

  2. Promote Mental Health Conversations: Encourage open and honest discussions about mental health with your students, colleagues, and community.

  3. Access Resources: Familiarize yourself with local and national mental health resources available for students and families.

  4. Advocate for Training: Advocate for suicide prevention and mental health training in your school district to ensure that all staff are equipped to support students effectively.

  5. Raise Awareness: Use your voice to raise awareness about National Suicide Prevention Month within your school and community. Share information and resources.

Remember, You Are Not Alone:

If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, it is crucial to seek help immediately. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24/7 at 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255). Text "HELLO" to 741741 to connect with a trained crisis counselor.
