Spotlight
Laura Olson joined the District Office team in late fall 2025, bringing skills and a sense of humor to her multiple roles.
Investing in students is its own reward
GET TO KNOW LAURA OLSON
An administrative assistant and paralegal by training, Laura Olson was looking for a career change last fall that was meaningful and contributed to the community in some way. When she saw Red Wing Public Schools’ job posting for a reconciliations and benefits coordinator, she promptly applied.
“I was so excited at the idea that I could be a part of our children’s education even in some small capacity. I am very passionate about investing in future generations through education and I have found it very rewarding to work here,” she said.
Please tell us about your job. What do you like most about the work?
I help current and retired employees with their benefits questions and help them with any issues they may have. I also work with our finance department to reconcile our invoices and assist with state reporting.
I most enjoy working with our amazing employees and getting to know everyone and helping them figure out their issues and questions. I have started doing new hire orientation and it has been nice to be one of the first people to welcome our new employees. Bonus, everyone in the district office is fantastic. I love it here!
What is something you’ve learned about Red Wing Public Schools?
I have been so impressed (and a little jealous) with all of the programs and extracurricular activities and different groups that the students have access to! I got the opportunity to see Ovation, the a cappella choir. and they were incredibly talented!
If you could be on a game show, what would you choose?
I would dominate on “Wheel of Fortune” as long as the wheel didn’t betray me and land on bankrupt every time.
What is your go-to?
Music. I cannot live without it and I have a very vast knowledge and eclectic taste. Soul, Indie, Punk, Metal, Polka, Folk, Funk. All of it! Some of my favorite artists are Weird Al, Cake, Tenacious D, and First Aid Kit.
What brings you joy?
My people. I am lucky to be loved by many and I enjoy spending time with my family and friends whenever possible. I especially love spending time with my nieces and nephew who live right down the street from me. They are why I moved here from my hometown Cloquet, Minnesota, and I am so glad I did to see them grow up into the smart funny little goofballs that they are.

Winger Flight Paths
Brayden Hanisch prepares an exhibit at the Depot Gallery. He is completing an internship with Red Wing Arts.
Getting creative while exploring the business of art
By Philip Lockwood
Winger Flight Path Intern
On the furthest fringe of downtown, just a few yards away from the Mississippi Riverbank, Red Wing High School senior and artist Brayden Hanisch interns for the Red Wing Arts inside the train depot. Hanisch, a participant in the Wingers Flight Paths program, is exploring his interest in an art career.
Brayden’s interest in art began at a young age and has been supported by his parents since its inception. Whereas other painters may cite Monet or Pollock as their inspirations, Brayden finds his motivation in the songwriting of country music. Hank Williams and Randy Travis place at the top of his list. Looking at his works, you’d believe it. Many depict cowboys and outlaws and western landscapes. Many of them hang on the walls of downtown's Hanisch Bakery, which his father owns.
At his Red Wing Arts internship, his tasks at the Depot vary. Occasionally, he will help organize and set up art exhibits as old displays rotate out and new ones are brought in. But his primary project at the moment is planning a gallery that will take place in 2028. Brayden says he has noticed a growth in his communicative skills and a better understanding of business since he began his internship at Red Wing Arts. He will be bringing these skills with him to University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where he plans to study business this fall.
