Article: Sharks
Sharks are a large kind of fish that live in the ocean. They are some of the oldest animals on earth. Sharks first appeared more than 300 million years ago. Even though many people are afraid of sharks, most sharks do not hurt people. Out of the more than 300 species of sharks, only seven are dangerous to people.
Different kinds of sharks eat different kinds of things, including fish, sea lions, squid, plankton, and sometimes even other sharks. A baby shark is called a pup. Most sharks give birth to live young, but some species lay eggs. Sharks have to swim constantly, or they will sink. Some sharks can swim as fast as 60 miles per hour!
Sharks have bodies much like most fish. They have fins, tails, and gills that help them breathe underwater. Unlike most fish, a shark's skeleton is made of cartilage. Cartilage is a tough tissue that is similar to bone, but softer and lighter. This helps sharks float in water even though they can be very heavy. Instead of scales, a shark has denticles. These are tiny tooth-like bumps that help the shark swim better and help protect the shark. A shark’s mouth is on the underside of its body. Sharks have many rows of sharp teeth. They grow constantly, and older teeth fall out to make way for new teeth.
Sharks are all different sizes, from tiny to enormous. The smallest shark is only about 8 inches long. It is called the Pygmy shark. The Whale shark is the largest shark. It can grow to about 40 feet long.
