Message from Principal Parravano
Welcome to the 2026-2027 school year.
9/6/2026
We’re happy you’re here! The summer flew by and now we are ready to roll up our sleeves, welcome our students back, and get to work. I have a lot of information to share, so this message will be a little longer than usual.
I want to share an important staffing update with our South community. At the end of September/early October, Ms. Parent will be leaving South to pursue a once-in-a-lifetime professional opportunity. Ms. Parent has been an important part of our school community for many years, serving South as a teacher, class advisor, and as an administrator. We are grateful for the many ways she has supported our students, staff, and families, and we wish her nothing but the best in this exciting next chapter.
With Ms. Parent’s departure, Dr. Hyliard will start the year as Assistant Principal for 9th and 11th grades. We are currently exploring options for additional administrative support and will share more information with families once that plan is finalized.
New Lunch Procedures:
Beginning Tuesday, September 8, we will implement a new check-in/check-out procedure for students participating in open campus lunch. The primary reason for this change is student safety. In the event of an emergency, it is important that we have an accurate record of which students are on campus and which students have left the building during lunch.
All students must carry their school ID with them each day. To leave campus for lunch, students will be required to present their school ID and have it scanned before exiting. Students may leave through Door K in the S Building, Door C near Cleminson Hall, or Door B near the secure vestibule. Students who do not have their school ID will not be permitted to leave campus for lunch.
When returning from lunch, students must enter through Door K or Door C and present their school ID to be scanned back into the building. Students are expected to follow the check-in/check-out process each time they leave and return during lunch. Students who fail to do so may be subject to disciplinary consequences. It is also recommended that students return to the building in plenty of time so that they are able to get to class on time. We are not marking tardies during the first week so students will have some flexibility. Students who are continually late from lunch will have their open campus privilege revoked by administration.
As with any new procedure, we know it will take some time for everyone to adjust and for us to refine the process. Please help us by talking with your child and reinforcing the importance of having their school ID with them each day, going in and out through the correct doors, and following the new check in/out process. We will closely monitor implementation and make adjustments as needed to ensure the process is safe, efficient, and works well.
Our students are most successful when our school and families work together, and we look forward to continuing that partnership throughout the year.
Here’s to a week of learning, leading, and growing!

Safety Tips with School Resource Officer Jim
Crosswalks
As many of you know, two of the most frequently used crosswalks around Grosse
Pointe South are located on Grosse Pointe Boulevard at McKinley Place and on
Fisher Road near the front entrance of the school.
Grosse Pointe South is a walk-zone community, and hundreds of students utilize these
crosswalks throughout the school day. With that in mind, here are a few important
reminders:
Pedestrians
- Stay alert. Put your phone away and watch traffic in both directions.
- Make eye contact. Never assume a driver will stop. Wait until vehicles have completely stopped before crossing.
- Be visible. Use extra caution in rain, snow, ice, or darkness.
Drivers
- Slow down. Stay patient. Stay focused.
- Avoid distractions and watch carefully for students entering crosswalks.
- Give yourself extra time so you are not rushing.
- Slow down during arrival and dismissal and be ready to stop.
Every student gets to and from school safely.

Assistant Principal's Message
Welcome Back Students!
I cannot wait for Tuesday morning and the opportunity to welcome our amazing students back to South! I’ll be at the Grosse Pointe Blvd. entrance to say “Good Morning” and help kick off a great school year.
Dr. Hyliard’s Week 1 To-Do List for Families
1. Ask your student a question every day.
Go beyond “How was your day?” Try questions that encourage conversation:
- What was the best part of your day, and what made it good?
- Who did you spend the most time talking to today?
- Which class do you think you’re going to enjoy the most? Why?
2. Encourage your student to start strong habits.
- Put the phone away when it’s time to learn, study, or complete homework.
- Take advantage of after-school tutoring. Get extra support or simply build the habit of completing homework before leaving school.
- Get involved. Join a club, attend an event, go to a game, or try something new.
The habits and connections students build early can set the tone for a successful year.
Let’s start strong, South!
