Black History Spirit Week -- No Charge and Available for All Staff and Students
All Clothing Must Be School Appropriate
Suggestions for Black History Month Spirit Week Dress down:
We realize some of the days may be a little less self-explanatory so here are some tips.
- Black Excellence: Dress up as your favorite influential African American, if you don't follow influencers you can pick a historical figure from the past or present (examples: MLK, Rosa Parks, Beyonce', Lebron James, etc.). You don’t have to try to make your hair and/or make-up look like your person of choice. Just make sure your clothes resemble the person fashion-wise.
- HBCU Day: If you don’t already have HBCU gear you can simply wear the school’s colors. Please be honest and pick colors that relate to an HBCU! If someone asked what school you’re representing you should be able to answer honestly.

Little Known Black History Facts!
Benjamin Thornton Montgomery: (1819–1877) American inventor, landowner, and freedman
Benjamin Thornton Montgomery was an American inventor, landowner, and freedman in Mississippi. He was taught to read and write English, and became manager of supply and shipping for Joseph Emory Davis at Hurricane Plantation at Davis Bend. Montgomery demonstrated his mechanical ability by inventing a boat propeller that Joseph Davis attempted to have patented in Montgomery’s name. US law, however, did not allow a slave to hold a patent, so Davis’s effort failed, and Montgomery’s invention went unrecognized.
Mary Booze: (1878–1955) American Politician
Mary Cordelia Montgomery Booze was an American political organizer and activist. The daughter of former slaves, she was the first African-American woman to sit on the Republican National Committee. From 1924 until her death, she was the national committeewoman for her native state of Mississippi. She's also the daughter of Isaiah Thornton Montgomery.
Isaiah T. Montgomery (1847-1924): The Founder & Mayor of Mounds Bayou
Isaiah Thornton Montgomery was an African-American leader best known for founding the all-black town of Mound Bayou, Mississippi, and for his public endorsement of black disenfranchisement. Montgomery was born enslaved on May 21, 1847, on the Hurricane Plantation at Davis Bend, an area along the Mississippi River near Vicksburg, Mississippi. He's also the son of Benjamin Thornton Montgomery.

Please do not leave homework requests on the attendance hotline. Please call the main office for assistance at (810) 600-5000.
Attendance
All students attending IAF are expected to attend school every day and on time. School begins at 8:00 AM and dismisses at 3:28 PM.
DID YOU KNOW?
Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
Students can still fall behind if they miss just one or two days every few weeks.
Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
Tard Policy
The Tardy Policy is in full swing at IAF for Gr. 6-12. Please continue to encourage your scholar to prioritize getting to EVERY class on time!

Adult Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS)
Have you heard the news? IAF now has PBIS for adults! What is this and what does it mean? This is an opportunity for our IAF parents/guardians/caregivers to earn points for attending parent meetings, workshops, special events and a host of other activities. Look for the total number of points to be earned on our flyers. Scan the QR Code posted during the event to earn points. Points can be redeemed for household items in PARC.

Community Conversation: Advocacy
A special thanks to our parents and caregivers for attending the Community Conversation on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. Although the weather was not the best, we had a good showing of parents/caregivers. The topic was Advocacy. We are grateful for our guest presenter Marianne Fant, MAPSA Grassroots and Outreach Director for sharing valuable information as we prepare to organize a parent/caregiver trip to the Capitol in Lansing. Stay tuned for updates!

Lunch Cycle Menu
Please Note: Success Begins with Showing Up!
- Breakfast is Served at 7:35 am
- School Day Begins at 8:00 am
- School Day Ends at 3:28 pm
- Early Release Dismissal at 12:30 pm
- New: Late Start begins at 10:00 am & Breakfast starts at 9:30 am
If you are coming into the office to request early dismissal, students will not be released after 3:00. It is too challenging and too disruptive to request the number of students being asked for early dismissal. We understand that transportation reductions are challenging, and we have been consistently working with MTA on this. However, it is a county wide problem unfortunately. Thank you for understanding and your patience in advance.
Change of Address or Phone Numbers?
Parents/Guardians- do you have a phone number/address that needs to be updated with us? We have a form in the office that you can fill out for a quick change. Or you can email either Ms. McKinley in our records department at smckinley@iafphoenix.org. It is extremely important to have the most current contact information for our families on file at all times. Please, be sure to let us know if this changes.
Are you taking advantage of our text messaging service?
Parents/Guardians- Our school utilizes the SchoolMessenger system to deliver auto dialers to our families in case of a school closure, reminders of events, or simply a dress down day, etc.
We would like to start to utilize the texting option as well on SchoolMessenger but we do not currently have that many families signed up for the text alerts.
You can participate in the free service by just sending a text message of "Y" or "YES" to our school's short code number 67587.
You can also opt out of these messages at any time by simply replying to one of our messages with the word "STOP". SchoolMessenger is compliant with the Student Privacy Pledge, so you can rest assured that your information is safe and will never be given or sold to anyone.
