COUNSELING SERVICES COUNSELING SERVICES

πŸ₯° November 13th is World Kindness Day πŸ₯°

Every November 13th World Kindness Day is observed; it was first introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement and has continued on since then. World Kindness Day is meant to highlight good deeds in the community, focusing on the positive power of kindness. Kindness is a fundamental part of the human condition which bridges the divides of race, religion, politics, gender and location.

Additionally, it benefits you to be kind; people who are constantly kind produce 23% less cortisol, which is the stress hormone, and because of the lower levels of stress, people who practice kindness age slower than the average population. This season, we hope that you can challenge yourself to be kind, even when circumstances may make it difficult.

What are some ways you can show kindness? We have a few suggestions:

  1. Hold the door open πŸšͺ

  2. Give compliments 😍

  3. Express gratitude πŸ™

  4. Say thank you

  5. Be kind to yourself πŸͺž

  6. Volunteer 🀚

  7. Help a neighbor or friend πŸ§‘πŸ»β€πŸ€β€πŸ§‘πŸ»

  8. Say hello πŸ‘‹

  9. Listen πŸ‘‚

  10. Smile 😁

🌎 In a world where you can be anything, be kind. 🌍

During the week of October 19th-23rd CTC students focused on making CTC a place of welcome and promoting a positive and engaging school culture. Activities included sharing inspirational messages on the Mirror Wall, encouraging messages posted throughout the building, celebrating Unity Day, and spending some time with the dogs from Wags for Hope recharging and reconnecting. The week was a great reminder that creating a place of welcome really just starts with "hello!"

Industry Professionals Share Their Journeys into the Skilled Trades

Red Wing Boot Co. helped bring together industry professionals from Morgan-Keller, Mallick Plumbing, and Altimate Electric for a career panel at CTC. Panelists shared their personal stories, how they entered their respective trades, and the experiences that shaped their careers. One particularly memorable story came from a Morgan-Keller project manager who graduated from CTC’s Cosmetology program before transitioning into construction after 10 years in the beauty industryβ€”a great reminder that career paths can take unexpected turns!

A special thank-you to Red Wing Boot Co. and Mallick Plumbing for providing giveaways to students. Congratulations to Jaxon from the Landscaping program, who won the $250 Red Wing gift card! The panel gave students an opportunity to hear honest career stories, explore different pathways into the trades, and see that there is no single route to a successful career.

CTC Students Build Connections at Construction Career Day

Students from HVAC/Plumbing, Electrical, and Carpentry attended Construction Career Day at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, hosted by the Maryland Center for Construction Education and Innovation (MCCEI). The interactive event connected students with more than 40 participating companies and industry organizations, offering an exciting opportunity to explore careers throughout the construction and built-environment industries. The event is designed to help students discover training and employment pathways through hands-on activities and direct engagement with professionals.

Throughout the event, students participated in hands-on demonstrations, met industry professionals, and explored the many opportunities available in construction. One of the coolest things that we saw was the handful of CTC Alumni working in the industry. From skilled trades to other roles that help plan, build, and maintain our communities, students gained a broader understanding of the industry and the pathways available after high school. Experiences like Construction Career Day help students turn their classroom learning into real-world career possibilities.

Teacher Academy Students Explore Educational Careers at Fort Detrick

Students in the Teacher Academy program visited Fort Detrick to learn about the Youth Development Center and explore educational opportunities serving children from military families. During the visit, students toured the infant, toddler, and preschool facilities, gaining firsthand insight into early childhood education and the environments that support children's learning and development.

Students also connected with instructors and other professionals to learn about their roles, educational experiences, and potential career opportunities. The visit provided a valuable look at the variety of pathways available to students interested in education and child development, while helping them identify opportunities to gain experience and pursue their future career goals. We then finished the day with a tour of FCC and heard about the great pathways they have to offer after graduation.

Culinary and Baking Arts & Agribusiness & Entrepreneurship Culinary and Baking Arts & Agribusiness & Entrepreneurship

"Throughout this past week as a third year culinary and first year AG business student, I was able to combine both classes in the kitchen to organize and create a very successful applesauce fundraiser!

Over the course of two days, we made 100+ containers of applesauce using a mix of ambrosia, fuji, and honey crisp apples with both an original and a cinnamon variety. A truly wonderful thing to note is that my friend, her mother Ms.Cassie, and I picked all of the apples ourselves at a local apple event in boonsboro and Ms.Cassie even bought all of the apples as a donation to the programs!

Day one focused on peeling, cutting and cooking the apples, adding lemon juice to the water to prevent browning while we were going through the process of cutting over 300 apples. On day two, we cooled and processed the apples using three methods: a traditional Squezzo Strainer, hand-held immersion blenders and a food processor. I choose to do these methods as a way for all the students to learn how the process has evolved throughout the years as well as to get a more hands-on experience.

I'm very grateful to Chef Liddick and Ms.Herndon to let me take charge on such a big project and to combine both the sales aspect of Ag business and the cooking part of culinary into such an interesting fundraiser!"

Frederick Advanced Audio & Video Students Take on the Frederick 72 Film Fest

Several Advanced Audio & Video Production students recently stepped outside the classroom and into the fast-paced world of independent filmmaking by participating in the Frederick 72 Film Fest. The 72-hour filmmaking challenge provided students with a unique opportunity to experience what it is like to create a short film under a tight deadline. From developing an idea and writing a story to filming, recording audio, directing, and editing, students were challenged to put their production skills to work from start to finish.

Unlike a traditional classroom project, the Frederick 72 Film Fest required students to work quickly, creatively, and collaboratively. With a limited amount of time to complete their projects, students had to make decisions about story, locations, camera shots, performances, sound, and editing while working toward a firm deadline. For CTC students, the experience demonstrated that successful filmmaking requires much more than knowing how to operate a camera. The festival also gave students an opportunity to see how their classroom skills translate into the professional world. Techniques such as shot composition, camera movement, lighting, sound recording, storytelling, and editing became essential tools as students worked to turn their ideas into completed films.

One of the biggest challenges was learning to adapt when things didn't go exactly as planned. Equipment issues, changing locations, scheduling conflicts, and unexpected production problems are all part of filmmaking. The 72-hour format encouraged students to think on their feet and find creative solutions. Participating in the festival also allowed students to become part of Frederick's growing film and creative community. They had the opportunity to see the work of other filmmakers, experience a local film event, and understand the many career opportunities available in the media production industry.

The Frederick 72 Film Fest is a perfect example of how career and technical education connects classroom learning with authentic industry experiences. Rather than simply learning about filmmaking, students were able to make a film, meet a deadline, and experience the excitement and challenges of working as a production team.

🚨Alum Alert 🚨

Hi, I’m Makayla! I had the pleasure to be a part of Mrs. Howard’s first cohort of Dental Assisting. CTC was the best decision I have ever made. It gave me people to lean on, countless opportunities and the chance to get a headstart on my future career goals. I started the program my sophomore year of high school, not knowing the impact it would have on me. I jumped in head-first and loved everything about it. I was learning everything from anatomy, to how to take an impression to how to be professional in an office. In such a short amount of time, I learned everything I needed to know to succeed. I looked forward to class everyday because there was always something new and exciting to learn. I used all the information I learned to gain my certifications and apply them to the real world. I worked as an intern at Frederick Pediatric Dental Associates and worked there over the summer as well. CTC has shaped who I am today and I wouldn't be where I am without it. I am currently a student at Clemson University, majoring in Biological Sciences on the pre-dental track. I am planning to attend The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston to become a dentist and specialize in orthodontics. I am forever in debt to CTC and Mrs. Howard for the amazing opportunities it has given me.

Are you proficient in more than one language?

If so, have you heard of the Seal of Biliteracy?

The Maryland Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by FCPS (and other participating school systems) that recognizes a student’s high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in one or more languages other than English.

Who is eligible to receive the Seal of Bilteracy?

Any high school student who demonstrates proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English. This includes multilingual learners and any student who has acquired, or is acquiring a world language at school, home, or in the community.

Why should you earn the Seal of Biliteracy?

It can boost your resume, demonstrate your bilingual skills to potential employers and to enhance your college applications.

How do you earn the Seal?

You have to show proficiency in English (MCAP ELA) and another language. To show your proficiency in another language, you must pass the Avant Language Proficiency Test. This is an adaptive test that assesses your skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. You can meet the Seal requirements before senior year, but you won’t get the official award until senior year. You must meet the English and Heritage Language requirement within two years of each other.

Who can I talk to about the Seal of Biliteracy?

You can talk to your home school counselor. If you are a Multilingual Learner (ML), reach out to Ms. Desimon at CTC.
