Spotlight of the Week
Ms. Farrell’s 5th-grade mathematicians have been busy mastering multi-digit multiplication! Throughout the unit, students explored various strategies—including estimation, partial products, the area model, and the standard algorithm—and applied them to real-world contexts. To tackle complex calculations involving 4-digit by 3-digit multiplication, students used structured whiteboard templates to keep their steps and partial products organized. To solve a problem about finding the square inches of tile needed, students used Total Physical Response (TPR) to help decode the word problem. TPR gestures are hand and arm movements taught in class to help students learn, understand, and recall math vocabulary.
To wrap up the week, students put their learning into action by solving multi-step, real-world problems using the standard algorithm. They first worked independently and then collaborated in cooperative groups, where every student recorded their work and explained their mathematical reasoning on a giant whiteboard.
The Girls Cross Country team opened their season with a very positive performance in their first race. The coaches are very proud of the effort put forth by everyone on the team!
Many Daley runners had amazing races, with 5 girls finishing in the top 25! The first Daley runner to cross the finish line was Noula P., who placed 6th overall in the girls’ race. Coming in after Davion was Lucas R., who finished 13th. Rounding out the top 25 was Wyatt S. placing 21st and Michael B. placing 24th. Jason M., Brysen P., Joseph S. Jr., Chanson P., Harry Z., and Peyton H. all finished in the top 50, which is an amazing accomplishment.
