Staying connected to our families is important to our teachers. In addition to the front page of our Canvas courses, we are excited to share this quarterly newsletter with our families to keep you aware of upcoming events, activities, lessons, units, and materials from our classes! The 8th Grade Team has compiled this newsletter to share some of the upcoming experiences your student will be having with us. As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teachers!

As a reminder, printed report cards from 2nd Quarter will be sent home with students on Friday, January 17th.

Art

As we wrap up our first-semester art classes, I just wanted to share that I am very impressed and proud of the work that was made. I saw a lot of hard work and growth over the last 18 weeks, and I just wanted to say thanks. All work has been passed back to students except for those who will have their work shown in the end-of-the-year Art Show. All students who have work in the art show will have their work returned by the end of the year, and I will also make sure to remind everyone so they can come and enjoy the show. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you continue to make great art!

Choir

8th Grade choir is finishing a unit about Polynesian Music. Students are writing their own “meles” which is a form of Hawaiian chant. Ask your student to see their song that they wrote in choir. After our song-writing unit, students will begin rehearsing music for their next concert in February. Students will soon have information on the King’s Island trip for May and the music program large trip for 2026. Please keep on the lookout for updates on the Vocal Music Program through our newsletter as well!

Band

8th Grade Band will be working on rhythm, scales, technique, new repertoire for the Spring Concert, and chamber music. We will continue working through our warm-up packet for scales, technical exercises based on those scales, and chorales. We will be introducing the “40 Rhythmical Studies” book to grow our music literacy skills. We will explore music reading through multiple concert band pieces, both traditional and modern, to develop our Spring Concert Program, which is May 8th. We will also do a unit on chamber music (small ensemble) playing, where students will work together to learn music in small groups to perform for the class.

It is highly recommended that students take private music lessons on their instrument. Music and Arts in Hilliard is a great place to get your students involved in this. Please reach out to me if you have questions or desire more information. hostetre@japioneers.org

Engineering

Welcome back!! I’m excited to get reacquainted with this group of year 2 engineering students. We’ll take a day to reintroduce ourselves and outline expectations for the class; then, we’ll break out some build boxes for some early hands-on fun. Before the end of the first week, we’ll be getting started on our first big project: ping-pong madness!

PE and Wellness

PE will be covering lots of fun games including baseball, volleyball, small-sided games, team handball, soccer, and students will get a chance to create their own games. In Wellness we will start strong by setting goals for the semester, then learning about hormones and effects of puberty, respect, and finishing the last few weeks of the quarter by learning about nutrition.

Technology

We’re waving goodbye to the 8th grade students from the first half of the year! They’re heading out on a high note, creating personal branding project advertising their skills that will hang at the school (if you’re ever here in person, check them out in the hallway across from room 28!). When the new group of students joins the class, they’ll be starting a programming project almost immediately–welcome to Future Tech!

Innovation

There has been a lot of work happening in our Think Big Space over the past two quarters. We are ready to get to work with our new group of students for third quarter! Innovation will start this quarter off with learning about the Engineering Design Process. We will able to practice a basic understanding of the process through our first lab- Paper Airplanes! Students will learn how to create a question, research/brainstorm, and make changes to their design based on their data. As we head into the rest of the quarter, we will continue creating with the design process, experimenting with science principles and learning about careers within the STEM field.

ELA

8th Grade ELA will start the quarter by continuing to read “The Outsiders.” In this unit, students collaborate to analyze character development, develop themes, and examine text to identify the meaning of unfamiliar words. After the novel, we will move into our argumentative writing unit. Students will research and evaluate information to develop arguments, select the strongest evidence, and identify counterclaims. This will be used to write an essay that students will share with peers.

In the next week, students will be selecting their independent reading book for the 3rd quarter. They will have the quarter to read and prepare a book talk that will be presented to the class. Please talk with your student about their choice of book and continue encouraging them to read outside of class.

Math, Algebra, and Geometry

8th Grade Math

The 8th graders recently started our Transformations unit, where students will draw on their knowledge of graphing in the coordinate plane. By graphing transformations and identifying the coordinates of their images, students will understand how these transformations affect the x and y coordinates of the pre-image. Students will apply this understanding of using coordinate notation to determine the coordinates of an image from the coordinates of its preimage.

Ways to support your child’s understanding of transformations by discussing transformations in everyday life.

  • Video Games: Discuss with your child how video game designers and programmers use geometric transformations when creating video games.

  • Architecture: Discuss with your child how architects and engineers use geometric transformations when designing buildings and bridges.

  • Interior Design: Discuss with your child how interior designers use geometric transformations when decorating spaces for commercial or residential use.

Algebra Class

In Algebra, we are beginning Chapter 7, which focuses entirely on Exponential Functions. We will spend the better part of 3 weeks diving into properties and real-world usages of exponential functions. There are lots of real-world applications with this topic as it is so prevalent in financial topics - such as investment options, loan/credit card debt, depreciation/appreciation, etc.. As always, we will be focusing on conceptual understanding of the topic and students will be pushed to consider similarities and differences of exponential functions vs. linear functions, where we have spent most of our time together thus far.

We will then dive into quadratics (as well as some inequalities) for the reminder of the quarter. Chapter 8 focuses on the overarching properties of quadratic functions. Lots of graphing and understanding of how quadratic functions work. Then Chapter 9 dives into solving quadratic functions as well as graphing and solving systems of inequalities.

It is also worth noting that I am very proud of the students for closing the first semester well. Students did exceptionally well on their midterms. They worked very hard to prepare for them, which showed based on their scores. Lots to be excited for and proud of amongst the JAJHS Algebra group!

Honors Geometry

The honors geometry students have completed the first seven chapters of the curriculum! We are now taking a break from triangles and other shapes to study probability, particularly conditional probability. Probability is one of my favorite topics! Students are familiar with calculating the probability of independent events, like rolling dice or flipping a coin. Now, we will learn how having some type of knowledge can change probabilities.

Once we complete the probability unit we will return to geometric shapes. We will use what we have learned about triangles and quadrilaterals to study polygons with many sides. This will lead us to our circle unit by the end of the quarter.

Science

Mr. Whitt’s and Mrs. Sugar’s classes are finishing up Earthquakes and learning about how seismic waves are used to locate the epicenter of an earthquake. We will conclude the Earth Science Unit with a short chapter on volcanoes. Students will then begin the Physical Science unit. This is an introduction to physics, which includes force, motion, speed, acceleration, and Newton’s laws of motion.

Social Studies

Ms. Nichols’ and Mrs. Sugar’s classes are currently learning about the American Revolution. Students are finishing up activities centering on key Revolutionary War battles and their effects, ending with the Treaty of Paris. Next, we will be focusing on how the United States became the country it is today, starting with the adoption of the U.S. Constitution, George Washington’s presidency, and westward expansion. Students will learn about the differences between the Articles of Confederation and the U.S. Constitution, evaluating why the Articles failed in our nation’s early history. Following this, students will study the disagreements between the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists during the drafting of our modern Constitution; these arguments resulted in the inclusion of the Bill of Rights. We will learn about the precedents set by our first president, George Washington, and how his choices impacted the development of our country going forward. Students will study the presidential administrations of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe, focusing on the major events that occurred during their presidencies including Shays Rebellion, the Whiskey Rebellion, XYZ Affair, Northwest Ordinance, Alien and Sedition Acts, Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark Expedition, Invention of the Cotton Gin, War of 1812, Marbury v. Madison, Judiciary Act, and Monroe Doctrine. By the end of the quarter, we will be ready to start discussing the events that, directly and indirectly, led to the Civil War in 1861.
