Counselor's Corner
August 2023
Welcome Back
I teach social emotional classroom lessons and small groups lessons. I also meet with individual students as needed. Students can be referred to me by staff, parents or self-referral. I can also provide resources for basic needs: food, shelter, and clothing.

Back-to-School Tips
FIRST DAY TIPS
Eat a good breakfast at home or school (it’s free).
Make sure your child knows how they are getting home.
Make sure your child knows their teacher’s name.
Make sure your child's belongings are labeled with their name (supplies, backpacks, jackets, water bottles)
Make sure your child knows what they are having for lunch.
Make sure your child knows you love them and can’t wait to hear about all the fun they had on the first day.
A GOOD SLEEP ROUTINE
Getting enough sleep helps children focus, learn and improves behavior
Start a calming pre-bedtime routine early in the evening:
Turn off electronics
Bath/Shower
Read a book
Tuck-in
Say good-night
BUILD GOOD STUDY HABITS
Read school communication so you know what is expected of your child.
Children need a consistent work space in part of the home that is quiet, without distractions, and promotes study.
Schedule time for homework.
Establish a household rule that the screens stay off during homework time.
Supervise computer and internet use.
If your child doesn't have access to the internet at home, let your child’s teachers know.
Help your child with homework, but never do it for them.
If your child is having difficulty focusing on or completing homework, discuss this with your child's teacher, school counselor or health care provider.
Helpful Organization: Checklists, timers, and parental supervision can help overcome homework problems.
