September Highlights & October Preview

Greetings Island Lake Families!

We’ve completed our first month of the school year, and we’re off to a wonderful start. Below are the highlights from September and what’s to come in October.

Learning About CARES and Being Our BEST

Students have been learning about our CARES values and what it means to be our BEST. Ask your student what “being our BEST” means to them—we’d love to hear what they share!

Lost and Found Updates

We’ve found many jackets and sweatshirts left on the playground. Each week, we’ll display lost and found items in the lunchroom so students can more easily identify their belongings.

Please label your child’s items and encourage them to check the display each week. At the end of each month, unclaimed items will be donated because we have limited storage space.

September Spirit Week & October Kickoff

We wrapped up the end of September with Spirit Week and kicked off October with a pep rally featuring Mounds View High Schools fall sports athletes. Students also had the exciting opportunity to walk through a tunnel on their way back to class. What a fun way to celebrate! Click on the link to see the tunnel.

  • Students will continue with Starlab in Science

  • October 9: 2nd Grade Field Trip

Ramsey County Watershed Project

The fifth-grade classrooms had their first three visits from the Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District educators. They learned about what a watershed is, how water pollution gets into our lakes and streams, and the role native Minnesota plants play in keeping the water clean. Students also explored the award-winning native plant garden on the west side of the school (facing Vivian Ave).

Reporting your child's attendance

To ensure the Island Lake office receives messages about your child's attendance, please use one of the two options below. Attendance messages sent directly to teachers will not be received by the office if the teacher is absent or does not read/forward the message. When reporting absences, please be sure to indicate the reason for your child's absence.

  1. Call the attendance line: 651-621-7001. This is a voicemail only line so you can leave a message at any time of the day or night.

  2. ParentVUE -- Select "Report Absences" on the Student List / Home Screen Click here for the link to ParentVUE login.

Will your child be absent for 5 or more days? Please fill out the travel form and return it to the office. Thank you!

Choir is now open for all 4th & 5th students

All 4th & 5th graders are invited to participate in the Island Lake choir. Mrs. Stromback, Island Lake music teacher, welcomes all interested students without an audition or prior choral experience to join. Instruction focuses on proper vocal technique and learning to sing harmony. Students will have the opportunity to learn about many different styles of music and performance techniques. There will be opportunities to perform with the choir later in the year.

Choir is FREE of charge and will meet on Monday mornings from 8:05-9:05 a.m. Choir will start on Monday, October 5, and will rehearse in the music room (Room 148). Depending on enrollment numbers, 4th graders may need to move to Wednesday mornings as was the case last year. This will not conflict with 4th grade orchestra and a final decision on the practice time and start date will be communicated to 4th grade families who sign up.

To join choir, please register below. Questions? Please contact Mrs. Stromback at amanda.stromback@mvpschools.org.
