Principal's Newsletter
July 28, 2025
Dear Onahan Community,
We are saying good-bye to July and "HELLO" August! It is nitty gritty time in our planning for the opening of school. Here are some important items for you to think about. Our office is closed this week. Our clerk, Mrs. McNamara will be back August 6th for new registrations. If you have questions or concerns, email me at mlpatten@cps.edu.
Crossing Guards - CPS has laid off Onahan's crossing guards at Raven/Nagle and Raven/Milwaukee. These intersections are tricky and dangerous. No matter the age of your child, have a plan in place for these intersections for August 18th. I have already expressed my disappointment with these lay offs with CPS, and have asked that Aldermen Napolitano, Gardner and Nugent intervene, if at all possible. Letters and emails to all of the above may be helpful, for as you may already know, accidents have happened.
The crossing guard at Natoma/Devon will still be available. If Natoma/Devon is a crossing for your child, make sure they cross there and not the next street over on their own. (Sometimes it's not cool to cross where there is a crossing guard) 🙏
Volunteer forms - If you want to be active and help chaperone field trips or help out at a major school event, I encourage you to apply to be a level 1 volunteer, which requires a background check. It's worth it to be part of the fun. Here is the link: https://www.cps.edu/services-and-supports/parent-engagement/volunteer-programs/
Lunchroom Supervisors - Are you flexible, organized, able to project your voice and love working with children? We are looking for two people to help every day from 10:45 am - 1:00 pm. If you know someone who is able to consistently work these hours all year long, apply by creating a link and looking for Onahan's Lunchroom Support job posting. https://cpsk12il.taleo.net/careersection/3/jobsearch.ftl?lang=en
Beginning of School Documents - You may use the downloadable and fillable documents, and start early if you wish. They are linked here, at the bottom of the newsletter and on our website.
