Dear Waltham Families,

Fall is definitely in the air at Waltham! The cooler temperatures, changing leaves, and excitement of the season are making their way into our classrooms. Students are settling into routines, building friendships, and continuing to grow as learners each day.

As the rain and cooler temperatures arrive, we are also noticing the added challenges that come with moving between our three buildings throughout the school day. With the addition of our second modular unit this year, there is more movement across campus for both students and staff. We appreciate everyone’s patience and flexibility as we navigate the changing weather and work to keep everyone safe, warm, and dry along the way.

If your student is in grades 5-8, please remind them to come prepared for the weather each day. Proper footwear, raincoats, and, as temperatures continue to drop, warm winter coats will help keep them comfortable as they travel back and forth between buildings. The ramp is a long one! 😊 A little extra preparation in the morning can make a big difference when the weather is less than cooperative.

Here are some important dates to keep on your calendar this month:

  • Friday, October 2nd – 📸 Picture Day
  • Thursday, October 8th – 🧑🏻‍🚒🚒 Fire Prevention Lessons & Drill with the Utica Fire Department
  • Friday, October 9th – Teacher Institute Day – No School for Students
  • Monday, October 12th – Columbus Day – No School for Students
  • Tuesday, October 13th – Booster Club Meeting at 3:30 p.m.
  • Monday, October 19th – PTCC 🍕Lunches for Students & PTCC Meeting at 6:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, October 21st – Board of Education Meeting at 6:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, October 27th – 📸 Picture Retake Day
  • Friday, October 30th – 11:35 a.m. dismissal for K-8 students; no preschool classes. Halloween information can be found below.

We are grateful for the continued support and partnership of our families, PTCC and Booster Club. Your flexibility, encouragement, and involvement help make Waltham a place where students can learn, grow, and feel connected.

Here’s to a wonderful October filled with learning, fall traditions, and plenty of fun!

🎃 Halloween Celebration – Friday, October 30th

We are excited to celebrate Halloween with our students on Friday, October 30th! Our Halloween Costume Parade, Atten-Dance, and classroom parties are always a highlight of the fall, and we look forward to a fun-filled morning with our students.

Schedule for the Day:

  • 9:45 a.m. – 🎃 Halloween Costume Parade
  • 10:15 a.m. – 💃 October Atten-Dance
  • 10:45 a.m. – 🍬 K-8 Halloween Classroom Parties
  • 11:35 a.m. – Early dismissal for K-8 students
  • No Preschool Classes

Following the Halloween Costume Parade, room parents who have signed up to help with classroom parties will begin setting up while students enjoy the monthly Atten-Dance. To help ensure that we have appropriate space for our students and volunteers, no more than four room parents per grade will be able to assist with the classroom parties.

🎃 Important Costume Information:

To help ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration for everyone, students may wear their costumes to school. Costumes should allow students to move about comfortably, participate fully in all of the day’s activities, and independently use the restroom while wearing their costume.

Please remember that all costumes must follow our student dress code. Weapons or weapon-like accessories, masks, face paint or face makeup, gory makeup, and blood are not permitted. We appreciate your help in choosing costumes that are fun, school-appropriate, comfortable, and safe for the school day.

🍬 Treat Reminder for Room Parents:
If room parents choose to provide treats for students, all treats must be individually packaged for students to take home. No food will be eaten or served during the classroom parties. Thank you for helping us keep our Halloween celebrations safe, simple, and enjoyable for everyone.

We look forward to a morning filled with costumes, fun, dancing, and Halloween spirit! 🎃👻

Student Headphone & Earbud Reminder Student Headphone & Earbud Reminder

We’ve noticed that many students are in need of headphones or earbuds at school. These are an important tool for learning—students use them every day with their devices, and they’re also required for trimester testing and state testing in grades 3–8 this spring.

If your child’s headphones break or get lost, please send in a replacement so they are ready to learn. If getting a pair is a challenge, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the office. We’re happy to help families who need support, though we don’t have enough on hand to provide them for every student.

📣 Help Us Celebrate Great Attendance! 📣 Help Us Celebrate Great Attendance!

Our first Student Attendance Celebration was held on Wednesday, September 30, and we hope your children came home excited to share all the fun and exciting changes happening this school year!

We are continuing to grow our attendance celebrations and are currently looking for three more sponsors to help make these monthly celebrations possible. We invite local businesses, families, and community members to partner with us in encouraging and celebrating strong student attendance and engagement.

We’ve already received generous support and exciting prizes from Medieval Times, Illinois State University, the Chicago Wolves, and more! Now, we’re looking to add even more local community support to make our program stronger.

How You Can Help:
Sponsor one month during the school year with a minimum $100 donation. Sponsorships help us purchase gift cards and prizes for student drawings that recognize and motivate great attendance.

Sponsor Recognition:
In appreciation of your support, your business or family will be recognized on our social media, at monthly AttenDANCES, and in our parent and community newsletters during your sponsored month.

We only need three more sponsors to help us continue this exciting program! If you or your business would like to sponsor a month—or would like more information—please contact Mrs. Lukacsy at 815-667-4417 or mlukacsy@wesd185.org.

📣 Please consider sharing this opportunity with your employer, friends, family, or on social media. With the support of our community, we can make a meaningful difference in celebrating and encouraging our students!

Booster Club News Booster Club News

The Waltham Booster Club would like to thank everyone who showed up and supported the Booster Club and area businesses in August and September. A big thank you to Bruce and Ollies, Skoogs, and Habanero's for hosting us and supporting our students in these past months!

We have a Euchre Tournament scheduled for November 8th at Clarks Run Antiques and Gifts Event Space. More information will be shared soon.

We will also be starting BINGO back up in the near future, so keep an eye out for those days! And possibly more squishy raffles thanks to Nicolette Caruso!

We are starting our indoor sports seasons and appreciate all the volunteers for admissions, concessions, scorebook, and scoreboard. It really takes a village, and every person plays an important role in keeping our programs running smoothly.

Some exciting fundraising news: we are in the process of designing our NEW scorer's table and chairs for our gym! Your showing up has helped tremendously in our ability to raise these funds in such a short time! We are hopeful we can get them ordered and that they will be delivered before the end of the girls' basketball season! We were also able to provide a bus and team dinner for our state-bound softball co-op team! We are so thankful we can provide these opportunities to our Waltham Hawks, and we look forward to continuing to fundraise to be able to provide more opportunities and experiences for our activities and clubs.

If you have a fundraising idea or opportunity, please reach out to any Waltham Booster Club member, or plan to attend our October 13th Booster Club Meeting at 3:30 at the school.

Keeping Our Schoolwide Goals at the Center Keeping Our Schoolwide Goals at the Center

As we move into October, we want to continue highlighting the five schoolwide goals that are guiding our work this year. You may remember seeing these priorities in our September communication. They remain at the heart of what we are doing each day to support our students, strengthen our school community, and ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive.

1. Strengthen Literacy Instruction Through the Science of Reading

We continue to strengthen literacy instruction through evidence-based practices aligned with the Science of Reading. Our teachers are using explicit instruction, structured literacy, and high-impact strategies to support continued growth in reading achievement.

2. Foster a Positive Climate, Culture, Safety, & PRIDE

Creating a school where everyone feels safe, welcomed, respected, and valued remains a priority. Through our PRIDE expectations and positive relationships, we are building a strong sense of belonging for both students and staff.

3. Increase Student Attendance & Engagement

Every day matters! We are continuing to identify and address barriers to consistent attendance while strengthening school-home partnerships. Regular attendance and active engagement are important foundations for student success.

4. Maximize In-House Staff Expertise & Resources

We are making intentional use of the knowledge, strengths, and experiences within our own staff. Through collaboration, professional learning, and sharing best practices, we are building collective capacity and finding new ways to support our students.

5. Strengthen Communication Through Monthly All-Staff Meetings

Our monthly all-staff meetings continue to provide an important opportunity for communication, collaboration, and shared decision-making. We use this time to celebrate successes, share updates, address priorities, and ensure that our staff remains aligned around the work that matters most.

Our Focus Continues

These five goals are more than a list—they are the focus areas guiding our work throughout the school year. As we move forward, you will see these priorities reflected in our classrooms, schoolwide initiatives, staff collaboration, and partnerships with families.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Together, we are creating a school community where our students can learn, grow, and thrive.

5th-8th Grade ELA

5-8 ELA events are up and running this year!

Waltham students and teachers met at Market on the Mill to read and share "I AM" poems, giving each child an opportunity to express their experiences and dreams. Through reading, listening, and celebrating one another's voices, the students strengthened their literacy skills while building meaningful connections within the community. We are excited about engaging in events that create welcoming spaces for our Waltham students, families, and community where we can learn, connect, and grow.
