Halloween Safety Tips for Oakwood Families
Halloween is an exciting time for children to dress up, enjoy treats, and spend time with family and friends! As you celebrate with your children, please take a few moments to review these safety tips to help ensure everyone has a fun and safe Halloween. Whether your child is trick-or-treating, attending a Halloween event, or celebrating at home, a little planning and conversation can make a big difference.
Tips for a Safe and Happy Halloween:
Stay together: Young children should always be accompanied by a trusted adult. Older students should trick-or-treat with a group, follow an agreed-upon route, and check in with their families regularly.
Be visible: Choose bright-colored costumes when possible, add reflective tape or glow sticks, and carry a flashlight to help drivers see you after dark.
Choose safe costumes: Make sure costumes fit properly to prevent tripping. Use face paint or makeup instead of masks that may block vision, and choose flame-resistant materials.
Practice street safety: Use sidewalks and crosswalks, look both ways before crossing, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street. Avoid distractions, including phones, while crossing.
Inspect treats: Have an adult check all candy and treats before children eat them. Avoid homemade or unwrapped treats from people you do not know, and check labels for potential allergies.
Set clear boundaries: Remind children to visit only familiar, well-lit homes, never enter a strangerβs home or vehicle, and never go anywhere with someone without permission from their trusted adult.
Be mindful of others: Remind children to use respectful language, follow community rules, and help keep neighborhoods safe and clean.
Talk about safety: Before heading out, discuss what to do if your child gets separated from the group, feels uncomfortable, or needs help. Identify a trusted adult they can go to for assistance.
Thank you for partnering with us to keep our Oakwood Huskies safe! We hope all our families enjoy a fun-filled Halloween full of laughter, great memories, and plenty of safe celebrations. Have a happy Halloween! π
