Greetings Doty Families,
Things are off and running here at Doty! We are settling nicely into routines and remembering which grade we are in. It always takes a bit to rework the muscle memory from the year before. Academics are starting up and students are taking a bunch of assessments. The assessments are honestly not the most exciting thing for kids to do but they are super useful. They give us snapshots of how students are doing in reading and math and make it so that we can target instruction to their current, actual needs, rather than guessing. We balance the days where kids take assessments by giving breaks and providing opportunities for movement and fun.
Open House is this Wednesday! Please join us from 5:30 to 6 and visit your students’ classrooms. Remember, this is a time for an overview of the class and a meet and greet. If you have specific questions about how your student is doing, please contact your student’s teacher separately.
At 6, we will be closing up the building and moving outside for a potluck. I will email separately if we shift to our rain plan, who knows how many times the forecast will change between now and then!
Wednesday is also Dot Day! We will be providing dots to all students as they come in in the morning. Dot Day is a wonderful celebration of creativity and also a really good statement that sometimes, when we don’t feel like we can do anything, we can at least make a dot, we can leave one small mark and it will grow!
I want to close with an acknowledgment of the fact that it is September 11th and honor those who died or were injured on that day and in the weeks afterward. May we never know such pain again.
As always, thank you for sharing your students with us,
Gillian

Notes from The Nurse!
otes from the Health Office
Hello! My name is Lydia Faesy, and I’m the new school nurse. I have enjoyed meeting the students and staff at Doty School, and I look forward to meeting other family members this fall. Please call or come visit me if you would like to discuss any health related needs for your child. I can’t wait to watch and assist these youngsters grow and develop over this year.
Hydration: The weather has been soooo hot! Thank you for sending in water bottles, and we have been encouraging hydration with WATER, water, water. Some have brought in other drinks (like Gatorade or Prime). While these drinks may seem fun and helpful, I encourage you to look at the ingredients for caffeine, artificial sweeteners, and dyes. Some of these additives may not be tolerated by the students. I encourage water as the best hydration tool for this age group.
UPDATES ON COVID GUIDELINES
Our school district is currently following VDH guidance regarding Covid this year.
If your child tests positive for COVID-19, they should stay home and return to school if their symptoms have improved AND they have had no fever for at least 24 hours without the use of medicine that reduces fevers. Testing is not required to return to school.
WCUUSD no longer has Covid-19 tests available. We will NOT be testing students, and will not be able to provide tests for families as we have in years past.
