Rohn spent summer as Mayo fellow Rohn spent summer as Mayo fellow

The Flight Path 2030 team recognizes biology teacher Anne Rohn for being selected to participate in a Research Education for Teachers (RET) Fellowship this past summer.

The RET AI fellowship is an innovative program developed by the Mayo Clinic aimed at connecting researchers with local teachers who are interested in integrating lessons on artificial intelligence applications in health care and to support teachers in designing classroom curriculum around emerging science and technology. Fellows were paired with a mentor to gain hands-on experience in AI-related health care research and develop curriculum in collaboration with Mayo Clinic education experts.

Ms. Rohn brought this experience back to RWPS, designing a unit that highlights how AI can be integrated into research and the scientific method. In her unit, biology students learned how to develop strong prompts for AI tools, which is a key step in using AI.

Students evaluated the outputs generated by AI sources and compared those outputs to traditional primary and secondary sources of information. Students integrated the use of AI tools in some of their own experimental design processes and examined potential applications of the tools as well as ethical concerns.

Looking ahead, Ms. Rohn is excited to expand these learning opportunities, helping both students and staff develop skills to thoughtfully and responsibly engage with AI.
